I've read a few pages, but it was so bloody awful that I had to drop it. I find it sad for a book of such low quality to receive such recognition from the public.

No one could pay me enough to pick up that disaster of a 'series'.

I only read them at the suggestion of my SO. I'm not a professional writer but had been writing my own ideas into a story and found great pleasure in putting my own thoughts and ideas in black and white. Anyway, I had writers block on the 2nd half of my own book 3 story, why my SO suggested I read it, not to copy the authors work but to get ideas on how to advance my own plot.

I did enjoy reading them, they were after all my first introduction to erotica and found the more steamy parts great for my libido. Still the writing is simplistic throughout I was glad I had read it through myself to discover for myself what the hype was all about and make my own decisions about it. The trilogy has since turned me onto reading Literotica, the free stuff online which is even more stimulating.

The trilogy by L James I consider as science fiction and consider it no more real than The Hobbit.

I read the first one and just decided that it wasn't for me. There's much better BDSM erotica out there...especially better written and more realistic.

Ok, here is my opinion. I have read the series, and I somewhat enjoyed it. It was very poor writing though. The story is great, if it would have been written by someone else I think. If I were you, I would read them like I did, to form your own opinion. But, if you are an advanced reader (which I am not), I don't think you'll find to much interest in them due to the poor, monotonous writing.

It is. It really is. I don't know about the stereotypical, because I am not that into bdsm, but they are all VERY repetitive. They had great potential though.

Curiosity eventually got the best of me and I read them all. The people who I heard about them from spoke so highly of it and made it sound down right scandalous which of course, I couldn't pass up.

I didn't hate it and I didn't love it. I wasn't shocked, offended or mind blown. I didn't find it overly erotic (black dagger brotherhoods: lover unbound was much more erotic and boundary pushing while still having the tortured character AND it was well written in my opinion).

The writing was okay at best, kinda choppy and repetitive but all in all it was an OK story and by the end of it I was actually interested in what was going to happen with the characters. I don't think it can be completely bashed as trash, at least not fairly.

The series obviously has a large fan base and has really connected with some even if it has greatly offended others. I'm sure that although some of the people who are more adventuresome sexually may have already been there done that, there are just as many if not more people that would be scandalized, tantalized and all together a little curious about trying some things they had never considered before.

BDSM is greatly misunderstood in general so its not really all that surprising that the books effect on the culture hasn't been wholey positive. I don't really think it's a very good example of the lifestyle though. There are much better and more accurate depictions of a bdsm relationship available to read out there. All aspects, not just the control.
