Google Plus - the new social network?

Contributor: Sammi Sammi
There was MySpace, then FaceBook and Twitter, and it looks like Google wants to have their own, which they're calling Google Plus.

It's going to have a similar structure to FaceBook with profile pictures and newsfeeds, but friends and contacts will be grouped by each user's choosings, somewhat like the lists on Twitter. (Visualize a Venn Diagram with circles that overlap or not, and your friends, family, etc, each occupying a circle - the circles may or may not intersect). Google also says they'll have a better approach to privacy than FaceBook does.

So, what do you think? Would you join up when it goes live, and do you think it'll be a serious competitor with FaceBook?

I hadn't heard about this. I wonder if it'll be any better.

We won't join unless it becomes a necessity for some reason. We're already established in Facebook and I can't see the point in having both of them.

Nope wouldn't join and I really don't know why Google keep trying to latch on to someone else's idea. They have had really no success in recent ventures like google wave and as far as I know google talk hasn’t been the most successful either ( but saying that, now that Microsoft owns Skype it may get more popular).
They need to stick to what they are good at.

My Buzz is all set up since my email account is with Google. I haven't start using it yet. I like the privacy circles though, I don't want other friends to read conversations I'm having with my family!

I'm in the maybe pile. I've had a facebook account since like, 2006, so I'm pretty well established on there already, have tons of pictures up, and I'm pretty comfortable with it. Google Plus sounds like a neat idea, and I'll look into it if friends bug me enough, but I'm not going to just convert right away.

I don't do Facebook so I doubt I would do Google Plus. But then again, I said I would never do Twitter and now I have an account (granted I rarely tweet...)

It sounds like a good idea...5 years ago. I really don't think Google could pull this off.

I don't care for social networking sites. I only use Eden.

...well, that wouldn't be too hard. If anyone's going to take down (or at least compete seriously with) Facebook, it's going to be Google. From the little previews of Google +, it looks attractive and less clunky than Facebook. I like the idea of "circles" rather than all those groups/lists/whatever that Facebook offers in terms of who gets to see what.

I'd like to join and I hope my friends join, too, if only to try it out.

I believe this would be google's third attempt at a social network. I cant remember the name of the first 2.

It's only current to February 2010, but... You get the idea.

Facebook has its drawbacks but I can't see my friends and other social groups all migrating to yet another site.

Eurgh. I'm not a fan of social networking sites. But I still have a dozen or so Facebook pages!
