Have you ever eaten garlic cloves? How do you like em?

Contributor: K101 K101
I was trying to coax my dog into eating a tiny shred of garlic -- right from a clove, a few minutes ago and got curious if any of you eat garlic cloves and do you like them? I've eaten them for a minor toothache, well, I bit on the clove for a good while, didn't just swallow it for the relief. And I like to try and have at least a little here and there for health reasons. Garlic is very powerful and the allicin in it is very beneficial and can help with certain health problems. Not to mention, if you eat garlic, the bugs don't wanna bite ya!

I don't eat them cause I love the taste, that is for sure! Neither did my little Pookie over here. He was begging for it because he seen me eating it, so I gave him a shred. Spit it out right on the bed. He begged for more. Gave him more. Guess where that shred went? Right on the bed! Lol. He is not a fan. But my reason for eating it this time is to help stop those damn fleas! It seems Mr. Pookie has gone off and found him some friends. Flea-infested friends. I normally use a flea comb on my pets regularly to get rid of any they may have accumulated, but this isn't just a few. I also give Pookie a bath in vinegar and Dawn dish detergent because years ago, my grandmother used this method. That's actually where I picked up the flea-comb-method! I remember on Sundays she'd sit and comb every cat (she's always had tons. Right now her total is 15 cats! She never can resist rescuing a homeless kitty) with her flea comb and bowl of hot water and Dawn detergent. I remember thinking it was fun to help her. I just loved combing and finally seeing a little flea in the bristles and then getting to dip him in for his final... swim? Drink? Mwahhaha!

These days it's not so fun, but I do get a little crazy once I find a flea. Sometimes I'll accidentally get to excited and yell. Then I either put a lighter to the little guy or dip in hot water/detergent. It's a thrill for me.

But back to garlic cloves. I spent today cleaning since I'd noticed quite a few fleas hitch hikin' on Pookie's back. I cleaned his bed, and then seen a flea on me! So I started tearing my own room apart, cleaning for any flea in sight. And that is when I found something hideous! Under my bed, I keep a box of fabric I use for sewing. It just so happens that Pookie has taken a liking to that box these past few days and made a bed out of it. When I pulled the box out and looked -- fleas everywhere! HOW did 3 fleas turn into 20 in less than 24 hours? I knew those suckers could multiply quick (especially since they don't even need to have sex to reproduce, which in my opinion, anything that doesn't need sex is evil. Lol. Kidding pretty much) but holy dangit!

So after completely getting rid of my entire fabric box, vaccuuming like a mad woman and bathing myself and Pookie in detergent and vinegar, I went to buy garlic cloves.

The vinegar is to keep fleas from getting back on Pookie when he's outside, and also because once fleas bite someone who's ingested or has vinegar on their skin/fur, they die! Or so my little natural remedy book says anyway. I went into a total paranoia after seeing those fleas and will stop at nothing. Lol.

I ate a small sliver of the garlic clove and then took the other piece like a pill -- quick and easy. I hate how it burns my mouth. I've heard if you leave it in your mouth too long (like if you were using it to chew on for a toothache) it can leave burns! But anything that can kill intestinal parasites is pretty amazing to me.

So I got to wondering, how many of you eat garlic like that? And what reasons for doing so? Do you do it to keep mosquitos or something from biting? Or for digestive/other health stuff? Do you like the taste?

I eat garlic in my food because I love it. And hey, I'm Italian I can't hate garlic! I also used to buy these cloves marinated in peppers and various juices in the produce section at my grocery store but can't find them anymore. They were so super yummy to eat raw and since they were marinated they weren't near as burn-y or strong.

I also had a cyst once that I didn't want to have to get lanced to drain.(gross I know)I ready something about turning garlic into a puree then putting it on the cyst for a couple minutes with some gauze and tape. Worked like a charm but boy did it burn!

Since we are close to halloween, use some of that garlic to keep the vampires away!

One thing that helps get rid of fleas on your carpet and clothes is to usse Borax. I'm pretty sure it's a type of powdered detergent. Sprinkle it all over the carpet and let it sit for a while. Then vacuum it up. Also wash all your clothes with it. Years ago when I was living with my parents we got a new puppy who was infested with fleas. My mom turned into a cleaning machine because we were all itching and freaking out. The borax worked like a charm!

It would be nice if this poll was in multiple choice. I love the flavor of raw garlic, but hated the burning sensation in my mouth, so I always mince before adding them to my sauces and cooking. I also take enteric-coated garlic pills every day, it's supposed to be good for cardiovascular health, but my reason for taking it is to ward off pesky insects (I haven't been bitten by a mosquito ever since I started taking garlic pills).

I love garlic! But I dont eat it raw. I put it lots of things. It is also good roasted then squeeze a clove on french bread and spread it like butter. When roasted it has a nutty mellow flavor.

we eat garlic in just about every meal we cook. I go through jars of the chopped garlic in water like crazy. I also use whole cloves of garlic in alot of recipes. I would not eat them raw though, would give me heart burn like crazy. I do roast garlic cloves and eat them whole though. Nothing better then roasted garlic. You can leave the cloves whole and add to what ever you are cooking. You can put them in a food processor with some white wine, salt and pepper and make a paste to add to your home cooked sauces or soups. So many different things you can do with garlic to add flavor to food.

I ate raw garlic once when I was getting sick as I'd read that it would help ward off the illness. The burn was so intense I don't know if I'll ever try it again. However, I have heard that there is no burn if you chop up the raw garlic and put it on a spoon with either honey or olive oil, swallow it fast without chewing, and then chase it with water.

Both my partner and I eat raw garlic cloves, for the health reasons, and for the taste, we love garlic. We use to get lox, cream cheese and crackers, and put a whole clove on top instead of the usual shredded onion.

Oh my! That is so awesome about the cyst! I'm glad you mentioned that. I will keep this in mind just in case. Lord, garlic is great for EVERYTHING! Lol.

Rossie: I have tried garlic pills as well, but didn't continue them because I just took to the actual straight garlic for some reason. Cheaper too. It is great for digestive stuff too -- very great. I would say my major stomach issues have been mostly helped by eating aloe, but garlic is awesome for it as well, just not as relieving. I guess it's best for keeping the yuckies away. That is awesome you've not been bitten by mosquitos since taking the pills! Hallelujah to that! Lol. I hate being bitten. I actually don't think I've had any bug bites since my recent phase of going back to the garlic, but then again, I don't think I've been out around bugs enough to really be bitten. I know we've gone through heck this week over my paranoia with fleas! I'm about 99% sure there are less than 5 fleas anywhere within 10 feet of my house! Lol. I seen two today though, not on me or biting me but I seen them suckers and I went wild cleaning. Every bed sheet, pillow, bed skirt was washed and so was I and the dog who actually got a whole 1 hour and 30 minute bath tonight! Yay for him. This is about his 5th bath this week. Bless his heart. We didn't HAVE to bathe him tonight, but the idiot took a trip outside and came in smelling of throw up HORRIDLY. I'm actually pretty sure he found himself a pile of human throw up and rolled in it. What is wrong with him? He's really acting up and it's not like him. Lol. So if there was a chance his inspection today missed a flea, that sucker was killed in his long bath. Lol.

Takin' NO chances! I've become a paranoid freak over bugs. Someone said something about being treated for scabies today and I thought I was going to come home and clean my entire house all over again. I calmed though. I calmed. Lol.

Gracie: very interesting! I don't think I have ever had garlic roasted. That sounds really good.

Married With Children: What some wonderful uses! I LOVE vegetable soup. I will definitely add some in next time. I imagine that is very good. You're right, I imagine the cloves to give some hardcore heartburn, but the other day, while looking for herbal remedies for GERD (I have self-diagnosed my lovie with it.) I read raw garlic cloves could heal it since there's this theory (mostly from ayurveda research, I've found nowhere else saying this, but I do trust ayurveda more) that GERD is related to IBS or other digestive issues similar to IBS and since I've had IBS since my teen years, I actually think this may be true based on what my lovie has described. So long story short, he's gonna give it a try, but is so terrified it'll just exacerbate the intense GERD. It's awful. I never realized how bad heartburn and GERD sufferers had it. I really didn't because I've only had heartburn two times my entire life and it was during pregnancies. I realize I'm very blessed now! I couldn't imagine that. I've had that burny crap from taking a BC powder on an empty stomach, but never something so bad as intense heartburn or GERD. I'm hoping this garlic (if he'll ever freaking try it! lol) will show some results. If so, I'll have to post and let you guys know. I'm sure others here suffer too, although I don't think anyone's mentioned GERD/heartburn much.

Rod Ronalds: You have my attention. I'm guessing your BIL is combining these two for health benefits? Mind sharing what combining with apple cider does for the health? I'd love to know. I know it is really gross, but I'm always down with gross if it means healthy! LOL. I've never drank a big swallow of apple cider vinegar because it's strong! But I have drank white vinegar, and actually like a little here and there. When I was a kid, I had hair that was so long, it reached the back of my knees. So during my childhood, my parents were so scared of lice (all that hair!) and kids were always getting lice at school, so every time my mom washed my hair -- I wasn't able to wash all that hair til' I was a good bit older than most people, she had to help me -- she'd keep white vinegar in a cup and rinse my hair with it. Guess what? I have never had lice a day in my life! Must've worked. But anyways, I was saying, I would take a few sips of the vinegar before she would rinse my hair with it. I loved the taste! I can't handle as much these days as I used to, but I still have a hankerin' to take a sip each time I open a bottle.

Apple cider though -- totally different story. I'm not near as keen on that, but would handle a very small swallow for particular benefits. I know I've read that it's great for tons of things, but I am curious. Surely your BIL isn't drinking the garlic/apple vinegar for taste purposes only? Right? Dear God, surely not. Lol. I wonder what it does for him?

LoveYouLikeThat: AHhh! Are you serious? They make the tablets for dogs? Holy mother of pearl! Thank you so much for letting me know. That's awesome. I love going with a safe alternative to any kind of "treatments" like this whether it's for me or the pets. I'm so glad you mentioned that. It's been getting harder and harder to get this ol' weiner dog over here to chow down on his garlic each day. Lol. I've been having to mask it even better as he's getting smart on me. In the beginning I could slap some Mayo on it and he'd wolf down. Now, I'm lucky if he swallows it even if it's hidden in steak! Ha. Ha. I will check Wal-Mart tomorrow for him some garlic. That would be so much easier on both me and him.

Looovemonkey: You're right! I have used garlic for yeast infections! It will also cure candidiasis in your... gut! Sure enough. I actually prefer a solution I made in pure desperation one night for a yeast infection over garlic due to the burning, like you said. So I've been making my own peroxide/tea tree oil/sea salt mix. Got desperate as heck one night with an infection, slapped some ingredients together and it was instant relief. I don't get them anymore, and actually only had a few during pregnancy, but I've been mixing the solution for my sisters for over a year now! Lol. Works better than anything else -- the peroxide solution, not garlic although garlic is extremely relieving, but does burn more than the peroxide solution. However, I also didn't love that my crotch smelled like it had chowed down on some garlic soup! lol. It does wash away though, and I suppose if you're in enough pain/itching, you won't care. I have used monistat before and did not have relief like I did with the solution or garlic. I remember using the monistat overnight instant crap and I didn't have improvement for almost 48 hours! And all that leaky... no siree! Plus you pay $99 for a huge garlic clove and like $10-16 for monistat. A rip off to me. Lol.

OoOoh! Really? That is great to know. Thank you so much for sharing that. Sounds like I am on the right track then. I wasn't sure if the powdered type would work. IDK why, but I just didn't know for sure, so I went with cloves. I imagine the powder would be so much easier on their mouths, and Pookie would probably find it tastier. I didn't know it was good for their coats too. Even better! Which reminds me, Pookie is shedding like a ... maniac lately. I mean it is unbelievable. When we bathed him tonight there was enough hair for an entire wig -- or another dog all together! It was hilarious, that huge clump of hair, but I have never seen this short-haired fella shed this bad. Seems like it did get extreme last year, but surely not this much. And it's winter, looks like he'd be getting more hair for a thicker coat. Or perhaps that is what's happening, he's shedding old hair to grow a thicker coat? What a mystery, this crazy man. Lol
