Alice, most gun folks say that a revolver is better than a semi-automatic because there is very little chance in jamming.

Pro gun, own guns, do target shooting and trap shooting with the shotgun for practice.
Have a gun safe for most of the guns but keep one pistol handy for the house.
Wife knows how to shoot, has her own gun, and frequently goes to the range with me.

Alice,
Before you invest in a semi-auto, be sure that you can cock it first.
My wife had problems with anything heavier than a .22 caliber Ruger. She shoots my .22 Ruger, and owns a .38 S & W revolver.

PRO gun!

I was raised around them, I grew up in the middle of the desert where you couldn't see a house in any direction until I was a bit older, so from a young age the world was like one giant shooting range!

My dad would take me out "shooting" from the time I was about 3 or 4, he had his bee-bee and I had a little rubber band gun (c'mon I was small, that thing was the shit!! I was a big kid!) and taught me the dangers of guns if not held properly, if the gun is disrespected, if it is used on something other than a target, etc. I was taught to NEVER EVER touch a gun without an adult's permission, and I never did! I was told without sugar-coating it that if I were to play with a gun even if I didn't think it was loaded, I could lose my hand or be shot!

By the time I was about 8 I had my own bee-bee, still having to ask for it of course, but it was mine!

And now, I own several of my own. Although I am not allowed to shoot outside of an actual range because I now live in a city area, going to a range is fun, and I own them more as a collection and something I enjoy seeing. I do, however, believe in people being able to own them for protection! Even if you don't intend to fire, if someone is going to rob you, and they see that you are pointing a gun at them, they're less likely to come after you! Even with a gun of their own, they're there for your money and don't want to risk getting caught if they can possibly avoid it, and don't want to die, that's for sure!

We own a few. My personal baby is a Sig Sauer .22 that my husband gave me for our first wedding anniversary. We also own a Beretta 92, a Beretta .40, as well as a Ruger .22 revolver that is just gorgeous on stage. Though I have a scar over my eye from accidentally being pistol whipped in a fight scene with it...

I am a big fan of guns. I love to take my lady friends to the shooting range with the .22's so they can get a feeling of what its like to fire a weapon, and to see that handling a gun isn't as scary as you'd think, as long as you are safe, responsible, and trained. They call it training for the zombie apocalypse.

While we don't own any shotguns or rifles, I enjoy shooting them. I don't use a shotgun for home defense because I have dogs, and it is very important to me that they are safe. While over time and with escrima training, I have become more comfortable handling a knife for self-defense purposes, and carry a balisong with me at all times; I have my eyes set on a sweet 1911 Sig Sauer .45, as well as a standard .38 revolver. It is a very empowering feeling to know that you can handle a gun, and that if the situation were to arise and I needed to use one, I wouldn't hesitate.

I don't think people are silly or stupid for not choosing to own one or being uncomfortable around them, it's very understandable, but I get frustrated if someone directly lectures me about being pro-fun, er, pro-Gun. I just ask for and have respect for both sides of the argument.

I'm pro gun and I own several. I came from a hunting family and married into one. We only kill what we eat so it's not for the fun of killing anything. Guns require respect. I have children and all of them know that guns are not toys and we practice regularily as a family in how to handle and properly operate them. My sons are 11 and 12 and both own their own guns for hunting only and they only hunt with their father. We live in the boondocks surround by several hundred acres of trees. Our neighbors can't hear us and if we shoot off a gun it's simply ignored because it's fairly normal. We get the occasional rabid racoon here and there and foxes out to kill our chickens so the need to protect ours is very present. It's normal for us and it's how we live. The thought of that right being taken away because of irresponsible individuals isn't a good one. Guns don't kill people - people kill people.

That being said I have pulled out my guns for the purpose of scaring or shooting at another human being twice. The first time I was home alone and a group of men tried breaking into the house. They didn't realize anyone was home at first, then after I screamed for them to get off the property they stood outside debating if they could deal with me or not so I shot a round off from the upstairs window to end the debate. Didn't aim for them just a tree near them. They ran right into the police on their way off my property. Nothing like listening to men decide if your property was worth your welfare or not. The second time I was home with just the three kids and someone broke into the house. I had all three kids inside my room and I stood outside my bedroom door with the gun on the stairs. He was rather taken aback to see some crazy chick with a shotgun pointed at him. He ran like hell. I was just as happy he was gone. Really didn't want to shoot anyone inside my home. But would I have shot any of them - probably - if they didn't take the hint and haul ass. We are so isolated I guess people think we are an easy target. Giant house in the middle of nowhere - problem is I'm usually home.

Guns are just an item. How you use them and for what purpose is the important part. If someone is going to do bad - having or not having a gun to do it with isn't going to change their minds they'll just use something else.

Wow! I am so impressed with knowing how you've handled home invasion, TWICE!! It's something that I dread happening, and I make sure to be prepared for it, but to actually go through it is something entirely different and terrifying. BRAVO!

We don't own any currently. That is only because we could not afford them. I want one for protection. We live in the city and it has got really bad just 10streets down. One girl got shot in the face while pushing her stroller down the street. All for the money in in pants pocket which turned out to be $3.00. We have some good knives around the house, but we need a gun. We want to do the weapon's license.

And will the authorities replace individuals livestock that are killed off by wild animals? Or pay to stock freezers so that families like mine will have dinner all year round? Why should we pay twice as much for store prepared food? Not to mention the quality of my food is ten times what you can buy in a store without perservatives and dyes. We live as much off the Earth as possible so this "authorities only" simply isn't an option.

Why should law abiding citizens not be allowed to bear arms and take care of ourselves?

Had I to wait for authorities I may very well be dead by now.

We've actually had a handful of attempted break ins but we have deterants all around between the dogs, harmless trip lines and flood lights set up on the property to trip or block people who come beyond our private property signs. Usually it's just older kids wondering around the woods acting stupid. So knowing when there's really danger and not is important. I was attacked in my own home when I was younger so I'm pretty on top of strange noises and aware of anyone in my space. I think most of them figure no one is home and it's all clear but if they came armed for trouble it might not be such good outcomes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a gun owner and I enjoy my weapons, but I don't believe that everyone should be able to own assault rifles. I have used them quite often, and have had them shot at me almost as often. I just don't see why we need those kinds of weapons out there to be used. That is coming from someone who almost bought one themselves (Colt M-4 rifle, obviously the civilian model), but thought better of it. At the least, I do believe in strong gun laws.

you do understand that the police do not stop crimes from happening, they come and try to figure out who committed the crimes after the damage is done.

a revolver is a better gun because there are fewer parts. The spring on the hammer only gets stressed when you pull the trigger or cock the hammer. The springs on a semi-auto are always stressed, not to mention the clips will fall apart if you keep them loaded for extended amounts of time.

There is also something just delicious about pulling back that hammer. My Ruger is single action only, so it's fun to see how fast you can get off six with pulling the hammer back each time.

I am pro gun with reasonable regulations to prevent people with violent criminal records or history of extreme mental disease from purchasing them. Such regulations should have an appeal process of course, after a certain amount of time (5-10 years).

Personally I don't have any guns, but I do have a battle axe and a thick wooden mallet (not a euphemism).

And as soon as the police to citizen ratio is roughly 1:1 that will work, but it would kind of put a crimp in living lifestyles that are not government approved.

I own a gun, and I know how to use it to protect myself. I'm not a particularly violent person by nature, but I am also not a passive victim. In addition, I enjoy shooting as a sport, and grew up in the country, so I recognize the utility of guns. I was raised in a house full of guns, and in my living memory, only three shots were ever fired. Twice, it was putting dying dogs out of their misery, and once it was shooting a very dodgy-acting raccoon in our backyard.

I may be generalizing, but most of the people I've met who believe that only authorities should own guns are city folk, and don't understand how important guns are to the health and safety of those of us who live in the country, and not often to use against other human beings. But if you live in the city, your local police are not an hour's drive from you. You are not likely to have free roaming animals and children that could possibly get bitten by rabid animals. You are not so far from the local vet that you've ever been put in the position to have to use a humane killer to spare your beloved dog agony, as opposed to an overdose of barbiturates from a vet. Gun ownership for those who live in the country is a purely practical matter, which is why even some of the most stringent anti-gun countries make allowances for their country dwellers.

Pro gun with responsible owners ONLY, gone shooting before with relatives (and pretty good at it), none in the house though. Too much hassle.
