If you have to evacuate (as we probably will, from an east coast "barrier island"), WHERE do you go?

If you ever have to evacuate your home...for whatever reason (storm, chemical leak nearby, wildfires...etc), where do YOU go? Hotel in another city? Friends home? With other family? How long do you feel comfortable staying there?

I will admit...years ago, during the evacuation for hurricane Hugo, we had no where to go (especially with our two dogs), so we drove inland, till we found a nice Holiday Inn...that, despite the usual "no pets" policy at that location, welcomed us, our pets and dozens of others in a similar evacuation rush.

We had a wonderful week, there...with great hospitality shown to us by the entire town, and (snicker), with nothing better to do then walk our dogs and watch TV for a week...well...we made a baby in the process!!!

Where do YOU go in an evacuation, and what do YOU do to pass the time?

Haven't evacuated (and I live on a barrier island on Florida's east coast). We've been lucky so far *knocks on wood*. Although Orlando usually gets hit worse than us. Our next door neighbors buy a couple of kegs and hold toga parties ... very old Florida tradition.

Wow, I've never had to consider this before. My part of the country's mind-numbingly stable

i live about an hr from georgia's east coast, but i don't think we'll have that big a problem. if i went to 1 of the schools there, though, i would just go home which is 4 hrs from the coast.

I had to evacuate my home in the Appalachian mountains when I was a kid. Army guys had to come in jeeps and carry us away to the "shelter", which was a rec center. I basically watched the local sports teams practice for fun. Hot, sweaty athletes.. yeah. ;3

Why would you have to evacuate from a 'barrier' island?

I live on the Maine coast, and luckily, hurricanes and such don't usually reach up here, but they DID recently put up evacuation route signs along Route 1. I'm lucky enough that if something really bizarre happens, and with the weather recently, who really has a clue, I have family in upstate NY I can stay with.

Our college kid just came in last night from the Georgia coast. She was smart, and decided to be out of the path a day early just in case, and will head back down once we know which way the hurricane is headed. Growing up on Florida's west coast, we never evacuated. We just had a supply of plywood boards that my dad and I had ready to nail up against the windows of the house. We only had to actually do it once however.

Barrier islands are essentially strips of sand about a half-mile off the mainland coast. This is where the beaches really are. They can disappear under the ocean because they're no higher than six to twelve feet from sea level. In my area, we have Cocoa Beach and Patrick Air Force Base on a barrier island - depending on the severity of the hurricane, they'll have to be evacuated.

Oh. Hurricanes. I understand, now, thanks. Though that begs the question of why anyone would live on a barrier island.

Why do people live on fault lines? Why do people live at the base of volcanoes? Why do people live in Tornado Alley?

At least we have a more reasonable explanation - WE'VE GOT BEACHES!
