Do you live in a part of the country that salts their roads? If so, how often do you wash the salt off your car?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
I used to live up north, but never could wash a car during the winter. However, I just saw a show saying you should hose off the salt at least once a week or more.

How many people do that???

I live in NJ and my car currently has some salt on it. I'll rinse it off, but I definitely don't do it weekly.

The roads are rarely salted around where I live, but I've heard that salt is pretty bad for vehicles.

I live in MD, and no matter where I drive, if it has snowed, I get my car dirty because the salt trucks come out diagonally across from my house, which means when I drive to the main road, there is always salt. New salt. So my car gets pretty dirty in the winter. I wash it when it gets too dirty, but as little as possible because it'll just get dirty again and I feel my energy is wasted if I do it too frequently

yes, salt kills your car. We dont have salted roads here in the winter They spray a chemical that keeps the roads from getting icy. That makes a mess out of your windows. It there is any road spray, your windows just blur and it smears everywhere. It makes it very hard to drive some days.

They don't salt the roads too often here. They're more likely to spread sand and gravel on the main roads. That makes our car a mess but if we wash it in the middle of winter, it will just get dirty again. We wash it at the end of the snowy season here.

I used to live in an area with a lot of salting, and I usually washed my car every month or so

They put A LOT of salt (or whatever it is) on the roads here. Sometimes, there's more salt than there is snow!

We wash my wife's car every week or two. I don't drive my car much, and almost never if there's snow, so I don't worry about it as much.

By "wash", I mean taking it to a car wash where people and/or machines wash it. Actually washing a car myself, even when it's hot, has never been my idea of fun.

I wash it after the last snow. Should probably wash it more, but it's old and I'm lazy.

It can eat away at the metal after a while but I usually don't wash it off because there usually isn't enough salt for it to make a huge difference.

Salt rusts cars so fast, so I run my car through the car wash once a week so long as it's above freezing. (I'm from Minnesota.)

HA @ Hazeleyes!

It's best to not wash your car in the winter. Ever had your locks freeze? It SUCKS!

You can still hose it off, but make sure you do it when it's nicer and won't freeze right away.

I usually wait until it gets warm, but even then I won't wash it unless there is little to no chance of winter weather returning.

The car wash we use has a dryer, so the car's completely dry before we leave. For the price they charge, it's the LEAST they can do.

I hear in some parts they use Beet juice to help melt ice. That must be interesting to see.

In the olden days it would eat through metal in a season or two (back in the 1940's, 50's) Cars today are far more rust resistant then even ten years ago.
