Military Service

I have military service, and was wondering who else did too-and what branches?

How long? How was it? Funny stories? I had some of the best years of my life in the service.

I've almost enlisted twice. The first time was early in 2003. The job market was rough and I was just about to do it to have a big change in my life. Two days later is when the US went back into Iraq (glad I didn't go). The other time was during another rough spot in life. Then I did some research and realized I was too old to go into the Air Force (where I'd want to go).

I think I'm just too independent and willful to follow orders from someone I don't like.

I've never been in the military. But I do have a lengthy list of lovers who were either active or formerly enlisted in the Navy, Marines and Army.

I have not served - my time came at the end of the Vietnam era. I wasn't drafted and did not volunteer. Many times I wish I had served and have great respect for those who have including my father, brother, god-father and many cousins.

Thank you to all in the community - and out - that have served to protect our freedoms. Here's to your my friend

I have none although I was involved in ROTC. I decided it wasn't for me, just a recruiting practice.

Penguin is my first partner with military experience. I previously actually stayed away from it lol. I love hearing all the crazy stories!

I have family members who have served for generations on both sides of my family.

I've never served. My adopted father was in the Guamanian Air Force, and my step dad was in the Danish Army.
I've thought about joining up, but I just don't know if it's for me.

If I had to choose, I'd probably go with the Navy.

91 Bravo and second MOS DS training at Fort Jackson. Victory starts here! Late 70's, 80's. Got out with no benefits. I was witch hunted. The Army was very different than it is today. I spent most of my years sleeping outdoors and playing war games. My training left me with the ability to yell louder than anyone I know and humiliate them until they wished they could crawl back into their mother's womb and pull the flap shut. I also can win all the stuffed animals at a fair and donate them to the children's hospital. We only have 1 fair a year here. It's great training for future homeless people or snipers.

Loved my BDU's. They don't burn. (Battle Dress Uniform) You can light threads and they will stop all neat on the seams. Youtake a lighter to civvies and they go up in flames. Learned that when I first got out. Set my suit jacket on fire at J C Pennney in the Luggage Dept. It also took me years not to stand at parade rest. I still do pushups. I can do them for an eternity. I probabley will be doing them for an eternity in hell....)and I am sure hell looks and smells like the floating garbage dump that is Oahu.

When I was in the Army we called the Air Force the Air Farce. They dress like bus drivers, parade around, and spend the rest of the day folding shirts - or atleast that is what we tell soldiers.

Very cool. I don't think I have any family members still in active service but my partner's brother is in the Marines. He just left to go back after being on leave for a few weeks. They are going to Iraq in 9 months. I hope none of your family members volunteered for the same thing :/.

My brother, 2 of my cousins (both female), and my brother-in-law have each done 2 TDY in Iraq, 1 in Afghanistan. Additionally, my brother did 1 TDY in South Korea, and my 1 cousin did one TDY in Quatar. My brother-in-law is luckily in Spain right now. My cousins are not scheduled to ship out again any time soon.

They all did extensive time in the Middle East. All 4 of the above mentioned are still enlisted.

Will do My older brother has recently returned to the military as well, though he is green instead of blue this time.

---

Both my mom and dad were Army. I was engaged to a Marine throughout high school. Have known a few Navy seals, and have friends in every branch of service.

I've even thought of joining the Air Force as an Officer in their Cyber Warfare division. But since my husband is going Officer it isn't on the table anymore. I do not like the idea of always being separated.

My Dad was in the Army, as were all his brothers. He even fudged his age to get in. My husband joined the Army and National Guard for a time before we got married as well.

USMC....

6 years then given honorable discharge after being wounded im Operation Iraqee Freedom

Ile be starting next month with work stateside for the USMC in logistics, but it will be stateside.

long term..... the waking up in the middle of the night with flashbacks or the long term of seeing an american flag fly and think "ive fought for that" or long term when later on a little boy comes up to you on veterans day and sais "thank you" with a smile on his face, long term ide say the hardest is the memories of combat and the things a soldier would see. Watching a war movie were people get there head blown off and there car blown up is one thing, having to be the one who does a mission involving taking care of that iraqee insurgant by blowing his head off and being 300 feet from a suicide bomber using his car is totally different. Or the long term question of why did I make it back and not my commrad.

Short term- well you fold a note and a picture in your pocket and fight at times, at other times you laugh your but off with your buddies. It was the best 6 years of my life.

In the end war is brutal and ugly. My carreer in the military was a undescribbable one. Its tought me alot of good and alot of bad. If I could ide got back to active combat.

I also wana add that we cant just think of those who serve. Ide be willing to say that the family sacrifices just as much as the soldier. When a soldier leaves, his family leaves him. Its tough on both.

I am the grandchild of a Navy guy. Sigel, Arch and I are children of military men. None of us has ever served but Sigel did try to get through bootcamp...he had a nasty reaction to the food and got deathly ill. He lost 50 some pounds and nearly died so they cut him loose, honorably.

None. I have a few people in my family, but it's just not my thing. I'm very thankful for everyone who does go into any branch of the military, but I don't think it's something I could handle!

I am not in the military and probably would never sign up, especially since there is war going on. But, if there was not a war going on, I would probably sign up for the Air Force, since my father was in there for most of his life.
