Moving SUCKS! How do you manage it?

Contributor: Rarity Rarity
I'm moving this summer from the East coast all the way out West to attend college and be with my partner. Thankfully he's got a furnished house so I don't need to worry about household crap. I just need to bring myself, some clothes, shoes, and books. The books alone weigh a buttload.

I've decided whatever fits into a carry-on and one, maybe two luggage bags are what's going to come with me.

After 40 years of my adult life I have quite a few room full of stuff and hate moving. Last time, about 2 1/2 years ago we did it bit by bit because it was only 1 1/2 miles away, that way we had room to pack in the condo to move to the house. I think next time I'll shell out the bucks out of pocket and hire the moving company to pack for me.

I don't know how to manage it, I haven't had to do it in 15 years...
I'll be moving in a few months though, and I'll let you know. :o)

the last move was from Colorado to Wyoming. WORST MOVE EVER! Especially since I HATE driving. my hubby had to drive the moving truck, so I had to drive the car. It was horrible

Yeah drink heavily when you are done. Help forget the stress you just went through. Other than that not much else.

OH yeah, when I was much younger I showed up twice to help my brother move and every time he was not packed. What a selfish bastard. Then we get to his new place (w/help from one of my friends) and we unpacked the entire truck while he and his girlfriend went out to pick up something to eat...they were gone like an hour and a half and we had everything unloaded. Never again.

2nd to Last time I moved we payed a few guys from craigslist, on each end, to help load/unload the truck. both houses 3 stories....exhausting work.

When i move i start way in advance, i start by packing all the random stuff i dont need for a while. like junk drawers, Shelves, decoration, i try and start in one room and clear out all the clutter and random stuff then move on to the next roomand do the same thing. i also use moving as a way to clear out junk so i do the 6 months or 60 dollars test,i say and i going to use this in the next 6 months if its a yes i keep it if its a no i ask is it worth more than 60 dollars? if its a no i toss it. so basically i need to either need it in 6 months or it has to be more than 60 to keep it so i tend to eliminate alot of crap that way too. I try to never do all the pcking last minute

I'm actually moving right now too. We're mostly packed and will start taking stuff over to our new place tonight. This will be my 4th move within the last few years, and all of those times have been cross-state or at least a couple of hours away for school or work. This is the first local move I've gotten to do so I'm thinking it will be a lot easier.

I always imagine that we have less stuff than we really do, and that the move is gonna be a breeze. But then reality slaps me in the face when we start going through all the cabinets and closets, and we start running out of boxes. I always try to get rid of as much stuff as I possibly can before a move.

The one thing that I like about moving is that when you put stuff away at your new place, nothing is cluttered and you have a clean, organized home for a while.

Congrats and good luck with your move!

I agree with you, moving does indeed suck. I manage it by trying to think on the positives of moving to a new place.

Just packed and cleaned out my sons room it does help doing stuff here and there so it is not a burden when the time comes. I already started doing some. I am coming along well. I just need a couple of totes went hunting for some in three different stores and could not find a decent sized one for a decent price.

Besides the actual moving, filing address changes can take forever too! With enough back-log and bureaucracy, I've had it take 6 months!

I've moved a couple of times and it wasn't too bad because I knew where everything was supposed to go, etc. It's when we have to help other people move that I get stressed out because they usually don't have anything packed beforehand so we end up doing all of it. We've decided not to help out unless they have already packed up their things because we don't want to be stuck like that again.

Exactly!
I couldn't have said it better myself!
Oh! Another thing I do to help the moving process is get every non-essential room completely done and cleaned as early as possible (closets, the bathroom except for TP, toothbrush, etc). It definitely helps when you get down to the wire.
Though once it gets down to it, moving sucks so matter how much you prepare for it.

Moving has been shown to be one of the most stressful of life events, however, we have moved a lot (more so in the past) and I decided once to make it as positive as possible. Bottom line, it is a chance to FRESH START. To purge those things not really critical, clean out the junk closet (not move it to a new home). If you can afford it, to make some little (or big) changes too. Like toss the worn out placemats and maybe enjoy a "new look" on your table from day one in the new place. In my case, I could afford to toss out ALL my cookware, plates, tableware..etc. We went shopping and from our first day in the new home, if felt FRESH, because we had new cups, plate, placemats, tablecloths...etc.

One more tip. My hubby got flowers and put them in every room in the new place on moving day. Even though we were living out of boxes for three months (we were too busy to unpack), it just brightened the place 1000 fold.

Good luck!!!!

When I was younger, I could move with only the things that would fit in and on my car. Then when I was married and a soldier the Army paid for professional movers to pack and ship our household goods. That was a luxury that I wanted to use again as a civilian until I found out how costly it was.

I hate moving. What is worse is when I move, it is usually between different countries. I've lived in 4 different countries in the past 5 years.

Yesterday I moved from a location 8 hours away back to my parents' house, and it was a struggle to get everything to fit in our van. I don't know how people move to places they can't drive to.

Moving isn't that bad. The trick is to pay somebody else to do it for you.

I am about to move since I just graduated. I'm moving about 7 hours away and I'm excited but since I don't want to keep driving back and forth 7 hours, I have to buy a lot of stuff there, and that is stressful to think about getting there and moving all my clothing and stuff like that in, and then turning around and having to go buy large furniture that same day. How do I know where to go? What's the cheapest place? I'm trying to find out as much as I can now to make a plan but there is only so much I can do. Cleaning out my stuff in my parents' house is also a treat.
