NYC smoking ban marks 10 years. What do you think about smoking bans?

While I am a smoker. I don't think it should be allowed in restaurants. I hate when I am eating and someone smokes around me. I really don't smoke to much anyways so that could be why. Being a smoker I can smell if someone is a pack a day smoker verses a pack every three days like me. Yes my packs last me 3 days. I may as well quit but I will when I am ready. As for clubs or bars I miss being able to smoke while out having a few cocktails. Especially in the winter it is so cold going outside after working up a sweat.

I'm in favor of indoor smoking bans, and do not smoke. I'm fine with people smoking outside, but I am also in favor of the local laws that say you can't smoke within so many feet of a hospital.

I quit smoking a few years ago. Regardless of my preference to stay away from smoky places, I still support a business owner's right to make those decisions for themselves. It isn't the same now that greasy diners smell like deep fryer oil and not cigarette smoke.

I used to be more middle of the road about it but since I quit smoking two years ago, all bets are off. I fully support all smoking bans -- for the very simple reason that the smell now makes me physically ill.

I'm a non-smoker, and the bans are fine with me.

I don't smoke, so I'm in favor of the ban in public buildings.

I don't smoke, never have. I think that the business should be able to decide if they want smokers inside their business or not. Just like I should be able to decide if I want to use their business or not. I can choose to only go to bars that do not allow smoking, and I did that before they started the stupid smoking bans here. Smoking bans do nothing but take away peoples ability to make free choices. They now have to go outside and smoke, but it does not protect anyone's health. The smoking sections are right next to the doors, so the smoke still comes inside the building. Plus they bring it in with them on their clothes, hair, ect..

You cant make the world a healthier place by taking away peoples freedoms. If they want to smoke, they will smoke no matter what rules you make to try to stop them.

I'm a non-smoker and don't really care if there's a ban or not. If I don't like a place I just won't go.

While I believe that people should have the freedom to make their own choices about what substances (including food) they put into their bodies, I'm 100% in favor of smoking bans.
People have every right to ingest as much smoke and other nasty chemicals as they like to, but if someone is smoking in an indoor setting, they are not the only one ingesting that smoke. Everyone around them in inhaling it too, and that infringes on *my* right to *not* inhale smoke while I'm eating.

I'm a smoker, and I'm all for smoking bans. My choice and bad habit shouldn't affect anyone else. We don't smoke inside, in the vehicles, around our daughter or anyone else's kids. We've always smoked outside anyways, pre-kids...I just don't like being in a smokey environment and when I do go to someone's house where they smoke indoors, I generally still go outside.

We have smoking bans here too...and initially I was bothered by not being able to smoke inside at bars, casinos, etc...but it's so normal now, it doesn't bother me. Back in my club days, it was actually a good way to meet people as we all huddled underneath the outdoor heat lamps, having a smoke together.

There has been a indoor smoking ban in Philly for a while, but the crappy dive bars that put on metal shows (the only times I go out anymore), still allow people to smoke.

Now the thing about this is, if you are used to the smoking ban everywhere else, it's now way more of a drastic system shock to be in a place that is allowing smoking. But also, because people don't have to go outside, you have the kids in the candy store effect where people are smoking so much to enjoy not having to go outside.

End of mini rant

I do not like smelling smoke when I eat so I am glad they banned it in restaurants. The Smoking/Non-smoking section was a joke - like smoke does not travel through the air. Otherwise I do not mind the smoke.

One large corporation headquarters I worked at had separate indoor break rooms for smokers to indulge. It was quite a walk, depending on where your desk may have been, but I thought that was very considerate of both the smokers and non-smokers.

I'm extremely allergic to cigarette smoke and even have had asthma attacks around it back in the day of when there were separate sections for smokers and non in restaurants. I am glad that is one thing I no longer have to worry about when going out to eat. I'll have the grilled chicken breast with a side of inhaler, please.

I smoke on and off, and I think indoor smoking bans are a good idea. It's only fair to those who have to work at the establishment. That said, smoking at a bar or after dinner is awesome and I miss it.

I'm asthmatic, and I exaggerated the extent of my reaction to my mother's smoking for almost three years in order to get her to stop smoking around my sister and I. When her doctor told her that she had to quit in order to be prescribed the mediation that she needed, that was one of the happiest days of my childhood like. I really don't appreciate the lung damage, and while I can't stop everyone from smoking, I'd at least like to stop them from smoking near me.
