Random posts

Contributor: Subbi Subbi
I haven't been around EF that long but in the time I have been here, on a daily basis I notice more and more posts that are pointless. It's pretty obvious that people are posting anything just for points. There should be a word limit or a error message if people keep trying to post things. I constantly notice a few posts from one person within minutes of each other. That are all pointless, and no one else even checks them out or comments on them. Its just annoying to have to sort through all kinds of spam/point grinding posts to see the "real" posts on the forums.
I would love for the amount of points given for posting a topic or poll lowered to avoid a bunch of point farmers.
The points are great but please stop spamming the forums with worthless crap :/

I'm noticing it a lot, too, now that you mention it. I'm also seeing a lot of discussions started on specific items, only for the actual post to be something more suited to the comments section on the product page (like: "This looks neat!"). My usual reaction is to just ignore threads like that, and hope they sink to the bottom of the forum quickly.

of course this ignores the possibility that someone is posting legitimately, but they're really boring, or their interests aren't the same as most on the board.

Point. I still just ignore them for the most part, though. It doesn't make much sense to reply if I can't really think of a response.

I have noticed this too, from the same few members, but I just choose to ignore the posts. They end up at the end of the pile eventually.

What seems like spam could just be someone posting in the wrong section, or new member of the community who doesn't know how the forums work. Not everything that seems pointless is spam.

I've seen a lot by people like the stuff already mentioned where someone basically writes a comment and posts it as a discussion. "Can't wait to try this!" "This looks awesome. What do you think?" whatever.

I also see a lot of cutesy "pointless" polls that I don't really dig but a bunch of people participate so i guess it's just what people do.

Then, what might piss me off as much as anything, is the people I see who I kind of tend to think would be better than that posting discussions that I view as probably being a way to disguise just wanting the points. They'll have a routine, like posting multiple articles from a particular popular website every day and writing essentially the same thing about each article. And of course they're all posted within minutes. Does anyone say anything? No.

And then there's the stuff I think is legitimate but no one else seems to. I definitely know I've posted what I thought were entirely legitimate threads and really truly wanted responses and opinions of the community and didn't get shit back. I couldn't tell if my question was just deemed to stupid or dull or if people considered it spammy or what. Idk. Maybe I just suck, eh?

Seriously! I don't start too many topics, but when I do, I check with forum search first to make sure that the angle I am talking about has not already been covered. I know the peeps who have been here a long time must get tired of saying "We talked about this in ____ post."

And yeah, I have seen posts in sections where it doesn't fit at all. Last night, there were some odd ones in "Sex Furniture." Is there a way to move wrongly placed posts to the proper section? Years ago, I was a moderator on a discussion board, and it was possible to do that on individual posts.

I wouldn't take it personally. I know I have posted one or two where I seriously hoped I could get some assistance on particular issues (how to choose a size for a waist cincher), and never got anywhere with it. Sometimes, I think it is just that no one else really knows either.

I tried to start a discussion about the Girl Scouts thing and I got no responses and only a few votes on the poll. I was frustrated. Especially when there are 5 threads, that ask the same thing, about menstrual cups.

Feeling a disconnect here.

I have posted issues that mean a lot and get few answers, then when I post something to lighten it up I get a huge response. Go figure. I have also seen my topics repeated and a ton of resposes. I think some of it is who is on at the time.

Once upon a time, there were a bunch of us who will occasionally respond to some of those pointless posts, suggesting the posters to look up an older link that will help answer their queries. But, there are way too many of those nowadays, so we simply just ignore them, what else can we do?

Sorry to learn that some of your threads were being ignored, they were probably pushed to the end of the pile before we were able to read them, thanks to tons of those pointless posts. You can always bump it up the next afternoon, allowing us a chance to respond!

Yeah, it's a little annoying when there are multiple threads about the exact same topic.

I have noticed an increase in pointless threads, ever since - and I hate to point this out, because I'd love for this event to happen again - the double points week. Since then I've noticed an increase in posts that were exceedingly lacking in anything interesting.

Maybe they should just take away the points all together for the forum postings?

Welcome to Eden! You've gotta take the good with the bad. Just ignore them or flag the post if you think it's spam. And if you'll notice there are about fifty posts just like yours (as in this one). But, I'm not faulting you for voicing your opinion and I think the "random post issue" is such a minor annoyance that it can be overlooked, for the most part.

I wouldn't go that far, but I do remember from my old discussion board days that there was a kind of "spam filter" that wouldn't allow people to post for a few minutes after their previous post. They would get directed to another page about it if they tried. This happened after someone came on the board and posted 500 new posts one right after the other. If you have to wait between posts, you are more likely to get bored with it, and move on to something else.

Well I just figured that if they were to take away the points, then there would be less "random" posts, and less posts complaining about the random posts. It would solve the problem.

I personally just skip past the threads that I am uninterested in.

the only thing that annoys me is when people reply to a thread that they clearly have no interest in just to say "i don't understand the question" or whatever... it happens in the trans forum a fair bit, when people find discussions on the front page of the forum and reply without really getting what the thread is about.

aside from that... live and let live, y'know?

i think the random posts are fun i specifically go to the social one just because of it i think it's fun to answer questions and if dont know what the post is about i just skip through it. why do you consider it spam?

It's annoying, but what can you do. We all have done this in one form or another. It's hard to find an original post when there are thousands of them on here and most of the subjects that can be brought up on the forums have already been said. Some a dozen times before. So sooner or later, no matter how cautious you are, your going to post something that someone has already done.
As far as the pointless post go, just let it go. There's multiple sides to this. Either they think it's interesting enough to them and feel it needs to be posted, or they just simply want the .5 cents!
That too me is just sad. think about it, it's five damn cents per post. I post a lot of things, just to be active and see what other people think on subjects I think are interesting. If there stupid and pointless to some, so be it, it will be burried at the bottom of the list eventually.
I think if a post is flagged, it should be looked at. If that memeber has multiple post that have been flagged in a month, there right to post on the forum should be revoked for a determined time untill they can get there crap together. That may stop whatever your trying to end.
