Sexual Myth Busters - Headache vs Sex

Contributor: Gary Gary
I have no idea where the stereotype comes from, or how far back it goes, but we've all seen the movies and heard the jokes where having a headache is the reason for not having sex. I've also heard that some of the things going on in your body during sex will get rid of a headache.

So... what do you think?

I get migraines, and man do they suck. BUT having sex - well, more specifically, having an orgasm, will make them diminish noticeably. A 'regular' headache can be pretty much cured with an orgasm. Orgasm + caffeine = totally cured.

The flipside is, having rough sex where there might be (ahem) jaw fatigue, rough oral, or breath play, can give me a headache.

And, yes, good sex can make me forget a headache. It can make me forget everything, like even how to walk properly or use words in a way that makes sense.

So really, I choose 3 of the above options.

I've never had sex during a headache, but the boyfriend has, and it almost always gets worse during the sex. Once it got so bad we had to stop. Not a big fan of headaches!

Gary should post here, because he sometimes gets headaches from sex. I wanna see his vote and posts too!

Whenever I feel sick, I always try to have sex with her because it always makes me feel better, but she sometimes tells me to go away because she doesn't want me throwing up on her. HAHA! I never have though, so I am not sure why she feels that way.

I have bad headaches all the time, so they do not keep me from doing anything. Although I do get really bad headaches after having sex most of the time. But it's cool

my bf refuses to be sexual when he has a head ace because it always makes it worse. i kinda wonder if its a gender thing because miss cinnamon says the same thing about her guy. with me i almost never get head aces, but an orgasm makes it go away(or distracts me)when i do. and yea i hate when he get head aces =[

It depends. Sometimes sex makes me have a horrible headache. Sometimes I have a small headache that can be cured by sex. Sometimes I have a pounding headache that will be made worse by sex.

I get sinus headaches a lot and sex does not clear those up at all, it just makes it feel a shitload worse. Normal headaches and period headaches will usually clear up from sex. Other times I get pounding migraines FROM strenuous sex so its a bit of all three for me.

Um, for us, it's mild choking, hand on the throat type stuff.

You would think that after all these years I would remember one time when I had sex while I had a headache, but I can't. I can say that sex does NOT help a stomach ache.

For me, it's about 50/50: sometimes sex will make my headache feel better, sometimes it won't. Other times, I'll get a literally blinding headache from having a very intense orgasm. Those stop sex, and aren't helped by more sex. The only cure is dark and quiet.

My boyfriend has never complained of headaches being caused by sex, though he has had them cured by a good orgasm.

One thing we can both agree on: as long as we're not doing anything acrobatic or causing strain, orgasm is the BEST treatment for back pain, for both of us.

For some women the release of certain endorphins during orgasm can cure a headache up to a migraine for others these same endorphins can create or increase the vessel restriction causing a headache or incresing the severity of the headache! For most men the release of pent up blood and flood of endorphins can cause a headache and for most will severly increase the throbbing pains. Shooting pain type headaches are also common post coitis. For some lucky guys a careful fuck is as good as an aspirin (or other analgesic). Just depends on your genetics and the response of your body.

Sinus type headaches cause by inflammation can be eased by the chemical cocktail released during sex but the filled sinus type pain can be increased because of the inability to breathe.

Yup history of headaches run in my family...had to learn all about them as we get the brain busting type headaches brought on by everything: coffee, chocolate, stress, fatigue, allergies you name it we'll get a headache from it. Still I find a quick tumble and hard orgasm can ease my headaches so that a mild tylenol can nearly cure it. It's why I LOVE vibrators they are protable and don't get tired or stressed from the day. They are also available at all hours and can act as a neck massager in a pinch easing the stress headaches.

I can't imagine sex with a stomach ache, both my guys have said they are afraid of getting thrown up on. It's an instant mood kill for them so it's not just your girlfriend Sir!

For the times when my headache isn't bad enough to just say no entirely, I have found that having sex will generally make me forget that I had the headache to begin with. And like Victoria said, sometimes I also forget other things, such as basic functions like walking and speaking coherently, lol

Well, I have to agree with Victoria and Heather.

I get migraines also, and she said it all.

My migraines aren't cured so easily. If caught early sex and caffeine can definitely keep it from escalating to the spots/blindness stage but hypersensitivity to olfactory and audition functions sets in very early for me so usually sex just isn't an option.

But if its just a normal headache, even a bad one, bring it on! screw aspirin.

I voted it cures a headache because we've proven it to ourselves over the years. But my wife still uses the 'I've got a headache' as a way to say she's not in the mood. Go figure?

I had to go with other because it really depends on the intensity of the headache. Having sex will make the headache go away but it has to get me close to having an orgasm or have an orgasm to make my big headaches go away. :p

Yeah go figure.

And seriously, I've never been not in the mood and if I really had a bad headache, I'd actually go for the sex anyways, because it does relieve it. I see no reason to say no. It's a win all the way.

I've never gotten one from having sex, either

If I've got a headache and have sex it makes it way worse. It will literally get to the point where the front part of my head is just throbbing. Not fun at all.

I absolutely agree - but I've got to respect my partner's choice not to have sex. Luckily it doesn't happen ofen enough to be a major issue.

Nine times out of ten sex will reduce the severity of or completely eliminate my headache. For my husband? Not so much. He claims that the intensity of his orgasm actually makes his head pound even worse. :/

I too have migraines, have had them since I was 13. Mine are in degrees, a mild one is alleviated by caffeine and a good orgasm can just dilate all by blood vessels for relief. If it is severe, medication and darkness are my only respite. Thankfully, the severe one's are infrequent.

I never really thought about it. When I get a headache sex is usually the furthest thing from my mind... but I'll have to keep it in mind next time I get one.

Well, sex causes a release of endorphins, natures pain killer. But sex (and physical activity in general) temporarily increase blood pressure, which can make a head ache worse. So it goes both ways.

Personally, it depends how back my head ache is. If it's just a light one, sex makes it better. If it's a bad one though, I avoid sex or keep it low-key.

That is exactly what happens to me! The better it is, the worse the headache. It's like my head expands and contracts with my heart pumping after wards, in unison with the knife stabbing sensations But it is worth it!

I really can't get in the mood when I've got a headache/feel ill, but I might engage in other sexual acts if my partner is keen and penetration isn't on the cards. I'd rather just pop a panadol and curl up somewhere quiet personally than have lack lustre sex just as a cure!

If I have a headache I am rarely in the mood for sex. I usually just want to lay down. Also, I've been known to get really BAD headaches during or after orgasm. It's usually just a blood pressure issue- or not breathing right. Deep breaths...
