Simply put: pro-gun or against them? :)

Gun control doesn't keep guns out of the hands of criminals.

Criminals don't care about laws. There will always be black markets. Criminals will always be able to get ... more
By this logic, we might as well have no laws.

I feel like guns make it far too easy to kill someone, especially in the heat of the moment. I think I'd be uncomfortable living in a society where anyone might have one in their possession at any time.

Guns are not the problem. Criminals are the problem. Does anyone really think criminals are going to turn in their guns if they are banned? Enforce the laws already on the books which increase the penalties for using a firearm in the commission of a crime.

Saying guns are responsible for violence is like saying pencils are responsible for spelling errors.

I believe in the right to own a gun. Not a fan of them, but still.

Laws that prohibit a particular criminal act in and of themselves do not prevent crime, they only provide for punishment after the fact. Ask any woman who has had a restraining order on an ex, that piece of paper did not prevent the ex from doing whatever he was going to do. It provided the possibility of additional punishment afterward.
You might say the police will protect me... cops are like janitors, they don't prevent the spill, they just clean up afterward.

We love our guns where I live. I own many and would never give them up. My husband never leaves the house without one!

The argument was 'Law X does not deter criminals, therefore there is no point in having Law X'.

Please explain to me how this is good logic.

That was not the logical conclusion of my argument. The law that proscribes, say murder does not in itself prevent murders (at least not many) most people understand that murder is wrong. Even though that law cannot prevent the act, the act should be punished. If for no other reason than to remove that individual from society so that he can no longer continue acting in that manner. There are some individuals for whom the possibility of penalty is indeed a deterrent.
Myself for example, since the state of Illinois enacted the enhanced penalty of mandatory jail time and several thousand dollar fine for exceeding the posted speed limit by 40mph (64kph) or more, I have not done so. Prior to that legislation I regularly did (on limited access roads not unlike Autobahn).

Do not however forget the difference between wrong or evil in itself (Malum in se) and onduct that constitutes an unlawful act only by virtue of statute (Malum prohibitum).

I advance to you, Errant Venture, the possibility that the armed citizen is more often the ally of justice than the enemy.

I didn't say it was your argument.

An armed citizen is more likely (statistically proven) to shoot a loved one than an actual criminal.

it really depends on one's mindset for owning a gun as well as their purpose for me to say yay or nay.

I do not currently own any guns, but I really don't have anything against them. That said, I think there needs to be limits on what and how much you can own. It is said that guns don't kill, people do, and to a point, that is right. However, there have several incidents in the recent past where, if the person had NOT had a gun, a lot of people would still be alive. I mean, can you imaging going into a theater with 6000 rocks? So there has to be limits. Do you really NEED an AK-47, StG44, M16, or a Beretta ARX-160? How about a nice bazooka, a mortar or a nice Howitzer? The point is, there needs to be limits and controls.

I've never actually shot a gun, but with so many crazies in the world, and me being a female, I've decided I WILL learn. My lovie just stalked me earlier in the bathroom tonight showing me how to freaking pull the thingy back on a gun. LOL. It's bad, I know nothing about them, but my lovie and my dad have mentioned that they'd like me to learn to shoot and possibly look into buying a gun for safety reasons. I am not against guns, but I am very cautious. I'm just now coming around to them though. I used to be very against guns when it came to them being around me. I wasn't against them, just did not want to be near one. I believe if you have a gun though, there should be EXTREME measures taken to prevent accidents. I would never keep one loaded and in a child's reach. EVER.

But no, I think guns are not the problem and should not be outlawed.
