Tattoos and Metal Allergies

Contributor: Gone (LD29) Gone (LD29)
One of the main reasons I don't have any tattoos is a fear of allergic reactions to the tattoo ink. I've read that, although rare, it is possible for the heavy metals used in some tattoo pigments to cause problems for people with existing metal allergies.

From some of the other posts going on, I know there are a good number of people here with tattoos. So I'm wondering, has anyone here had allergic reactions to their tattoos? If so, what happened and how did you take care of it?

I have 6 tattoos and only had a "reaction" in one. I got MRSA from idiots hitting my tattoos while they were healing. Stupid people.

I do not have any type of allergy (except poison ivy, and I get both the rash and hives... in freaking layers) so I can't comment as far as that is concerned.

Just had a thought. If you really want a tat but are afraid of a reaction you could research some tat shops, pick one or two, ask them what kind of ink they used and then look up the ingredients to see if there is something there that may trigger a reaction.

I agree with this. I would hope that the reputable, well-respected and serious tattoo artists in your area would be able to provide you with all the information you are looking for!

I would also consider getting a small tattoo first to try it out, and if there's an issue at least it's not a square foot of issue

I have been scared about this too. It would really suck to have a reaction on my first tattoo.
