Tattoos: Who has them? Who wants them? Who hates them?

I don't have one. I've been considering a line from a poem that means a lot to me for about 4 years now, but I don't quite have the guts to get the actual tattoo...I know that once it's there, it's there for good, and that makes me pause.

Anyway I was having a hard time trying to go to sleep last night. I started thinking about that I might want to get a tattoo. Don't have any so far. Thought it would be cool to ... more
LOVE Tattoos. I don't have any of my own at this point in time, but like everything that will soon change. Art is beautiful, and tattoos are one of my favorite forms of art.
I'm working on a piece with an artist now, to celebrate my Great Grandmother.

You might try Henna tattoos if you have something you like and you don't want to get stuck with it forever. It lasts about...oh...three weeks to two months depending on how often you bathe and a few other factors. I fully intend to get a set this summer when my artist cuz comes in town.

I LOVE tattoos. Huge fan here, provided they are done well.

I only have 1 so far, got it last month. Next one is next month (they're both small) and then hoping to get the first biggie in sept

My boyfriend has a few with lots more planned. It's all a matter of finances!

As for the whole "if it's not visible it must be for your partner" malarky, that's really not the case imo. I get my tattoos for me. They signify something. In Kat von D's book, she says that when you look at her body, you see her memories. I think that's a great way to describe it.

And in regard to the whole "but what about when you're 80" thing... 1) most of the old folks will have at least -a- tattoo then, and b) if i'm running around half/entirely nekkid when i'm 80, you'll likely be glad of the distraction!

Update- I went ahead and got one on the hip and I love it. It wasn't nearly as painful as I expected.

I'm wanting to do full sleeves but I think I might have to settle for half sleeves because of work. My problem though is that I'm way too indecisive for something that is this permanent.

I've got enough random piercings that most places I could get a job wouldn't have a problem with a full tattoo sleeve, I just don't know if I could commit to anything really that extensive. I've got current plans for a floral half sleeve that extends down my side and meshes with another fairly large, I guess you could call half sleeve in progress on my leg. I would love to have a Nightmare Before Christmas sleeve down one arm too, but I'm waiting til I'm much older and know it won't affect my ability to get a job, because piercings are removable, lol.

I used to do temporaries a lot - esp when I could design them myself. Big fan of tattoo markers. If I ever did get a permanent tattoo, it would have to be my own art. I'm really into art as a profession, and I can't imagine wearing someone else's art unless it was a reference to an artist I respect and admire.
As far as piercings, I just have my ear lobes done. Though, I'd consider getting a tiny stud on the side on my nose.

I'm not a fan of flash designs either. There is just something about them vs. coming up with your own design. True, you can modify flash for your wants (that's ok), but just walking in and pointing at a pair of cherry dice on the wall...

I just put up pix of my ink on my blog if anyone wants to check them out. Please ignore the man boobs.

I have:
Tarot cup on my left arm
Stone compass with my natal chart (sorta) on it, right arm. It's 8 years old and fading.
Right calf: "I like monkeys" in Japanese. I know this is what it says be cause my pseudo-brother's wife is Japanese and she wrote it.

I want a pretty (rose? butterfly?) tattoo on my back so it can only be seen when I'm wearing a backless dress or bathers and want to look punk/glam. I'd also consider getting a toe ring tattoo ot ankle tat, that'd be cool.

Tattoos are neat, but I hate pain. I think I'd also get sick of whatever I got within a year.

I love tattoos - I have 5 already and a list and designs for about 7 more I want but unfortunately skin art is just not a financial priority right now. I love designing them, getting them, simply having them, and I LOOOOOVE partners with them. It's a huge turn on for me.

I think out of all the tattoos I've seen, my favorite was one I saw on this random girl at a theme park. Very simple rose and stem just under her right shoulder blade and ended at her waist. When it comes to something like roses, I feel like less is more.

Also, TRUTH!

I have five tattoos currently. I didn't plan on being one of those people you met who has a meaning behind ever-single tattoo that covers their body; but here I am lol. I have a memorial tattoo on my right arm. One on my left leg, two on my right wrist and one on my left leg, I plan on having a good percentage of my body covered. I really want a chest piece that for me is the holy grail of tattoos. I’ve been lucky enough (so far) not to regret any of my tattoos. I’ve got good memories and bad memories attached to all of them. I hope you find a tattoo and more importantly a tattoo artist that you really like.

Good Luck ^_^

I absolutely love tattoos. I have two so far: three blue roses on my right inner forearm and a heart with a keyhole on my sternum. Both are colored, I don't really care for the look of black and grey tattoos. I definitely will be getting many, many more over the years. I really want to add to the two that I have to make a full sleeve that connects with a chest piece and flows over my shoulder onto some of my back. I want it to be fantasy themed, very colorful. I've also wanted my entire right leg done up with my family's zodiac signs, along with symbols that remind me of them for filler to make it one cohesive piece.

I love tattoos!
I have one across my back from shoulder to shoulder. Its tribal.

I want more! The thing is that my partner doesn’t really like them. I’ve been persistent on telling him I want more hoping that one day he'll break.. But I don’t know if it'll happen. I’m going to keep trying though because I do really like them and I have told him that I’d compromise with him and we can talk about what and where I want it. So, we'll see.

My next one I want is the birth month flowers of my kids on my foot/ankle, connected by a vine. Possibly having my man and I’s flower on my lower leg/ankle then having a vine connecting them both, and from that vine having my kids flowers on my ankle/foot on one vine that’s connected to mine and my mans flower. (kind of complicated to explain by you seeing the picture?)

I want them colored since they a different kinds of flowers, maybe a tent of color.. I’m not sure. My man says that he doesn’t like the colored tattoos.. but we'll see…

I just went with my friends to the tattoo parlor last weekend and it made me even more determined to get a tattoo! I have so many ideas but so little money. I want a tattoo that reads "eat flowers" somewhere on my body, a tiny star on the corner of my palm, a tigerlily, and a sparrow.

I have a sun and moon thingy on my back, down by my left hip. I love having it there because nobody sees it unless I show it to them. I got this one before I met my hubby, but he hates tattoos and won't let me get any more.

I don't like taboos at all. I don't know why someone would put a permanent picture on their body they wouldn't put on their wall.

I used to agree with you when I was younger. But I think it's easier to understand when you look at all body modification as equal. Hair coloring, piercing, eyebrow waxing, pubic shaving. It's all changing the way we look and the way we feel and how we express our selves and our styles. The only reason tattoos stand our is because our society has designated it as deviant and outside-the-norm. In some cultures, it's almost a requirement. An assumption that you're going to do it. Just like our society assumes and pressures girls to get their ears pierced.

But I do think some tattoos are not in good taste. I prefer ones that are meaningful or have a story or have their root in your personal history or identity. I also don't like the gross ones because one day we'll all be old and you don't want kids running from you in terror. "What? It's just a snake with a dagger through it's head drawn to look like it's crawling out of my skin." Just gross.

My Man has them and I think he look SOOOOO sexy with them. I spent so much time pregnant and nursing that there was no good time to get one. Now, however, I may have the time.

I did get a Henna Tattoo and where I eventually want a real one (on the back of my shoulder) and I though it looked good. The Man said it was a "wimp tattoo" and I should just bite the bullet and get one. He, however, has no piercings, I have a bunch in my ears, and I'm in the market for a Triangle. We'll see whose more brave. Damn, I've had kids, a tattoo or a genital piercing can't be that bad. (looks hopefully)

You TOLD people you were going to give them a tat that said something they wanted and then GAVE them one that said something completely different than what they asked and paid for and was terribly unflattering?

Jaw drop.

I will DEFINITELY check the ethics and reputation of my Artist again before I go under the needle.

I am not a fan of tattoos, for myself. I like them on other people (well, for the most part), but it's not a choice I can ever see making for my own body.

I can't appreciate the idea of a decision that is irreversible and follows you everywhere. Children, tattoos, life-long careers...

I've seen my enthusiasm for different art styles and iconography wax and wane enough to know I could never choose the one to grace my body forever. I don't know how other people do it.

I have a tattoo on my left inner wrist that's a bass clef and staff line with my initials as music notes on it Yes, that's possible to do; a person just needs to have initials that are only letters A-G My brother and I actually have the same initials, so we both got the same tattoo

I paid because he's a cheap bastard

I fully intend to get more, especially now that I realize my body maintains tattoos very well due to how permanently I scar. My brother? His tattoo is already fading after around two years of having it. Mine looks just like new and the scarring under the ink is still raised. Meaning a person can feel my tattoo, which I think is nifty

I have a tattoo that part of it can still be felt, my fiance rubs it while we're laying down, lol.

Your tattoo sounds so awesome and it's so cool that you and your brother have the same one. I did that with my brother and my sister, giving me the 'anklet' I have around each ankle, lol
