OH! You just made me have second thoughts about getting a tattoo on my lower back. I totally agree with your other comments!

I want to get a tattoo, simple tribal wings on my shoulder blades; little ones, though. But my dad won't let me and because I live under his roof.... He says that basically tats on women are degrading. =/ And yet scarification and piercing was done hundreds of years before....

I've thought about getting one, but I've heard so much negative stuff on the subject that I've shied away from it. I would like to put one on my neck below my ear or on the inside of my wrist. Maybe one day I'll summon the required courage, or not.

I think I might have said this earlier, but If I could just find 'the one' - the perfect design, I'd get one. I think I'd want one on my wrist, upper thigh, or a real small one somewhere on my hand. It depends on the design, though..

I was just having a similar conversation with my daughter yesterday, she wants angel wings on her shoulder blades. I am more open minded than her dad, he is of the same thinking as your dad. Just a quick comment, I don't feel tattoos on women are degrading if any thing when I got my first one I left the tattoo shop with a werid feeling of individuality, satisfaction that I had a meaningful work of art on my body that was for me only.

I used to want tattoos when I was in my early 20s. I remember reading someone said to live with your desired design in your head for at least a year to make sure you still want it once that year's up. I ultimately decided that I wasn't entirely comfortable with the permanency of tattoos. But I think I would do a memorial tattoo for a deceased loved one, and that would be the only time I'd have a name tattooed on me.

That's great advice. Live with the idea for a year.

Except... you often can't take a custom designed tattoo sketch out of the shop. You either know what you like enough to work with the design or it just doesn't work. I actually spent $150 on a design that I walked away from. (and the artist!)

The other thing to keep in mind is just how much you want your tattoo to show all the time in your occupation. I teach preschool. Generally covered all the time, but not always. Sometimes the children see... I just don't make a big deal of it, but I think some employers would not approve.

But I have NO idea how much they hurt somewhere else!

I have spent years on and off drawing personalised tattoo designs for close friends and family yet never got one myself. I'm tempted but I can't decide on what I want. Tattoo's to me are a wonderful medium of personal expression and many have very special meanings behind the artwork or hold memories of specific events in someone's life. I love being able to be a part of that and seeing someone walking around with my artwork on them.

Genitals, feet, hands, ribs and face hurt the worst. Pretty much in that order. I was a tattoo artist for years. I have somewhere around 20 tattoos, but I don't count them - as many are large. Some people count the hours they've spent being tattooed instead of pieces. I don't even want to try to figure that out!

Are wrists considered to be a more painful area? That's where I REALLY want one. The design I want is a teardrop shape right above a crescent, so it is small, but I'm kinda chicken shit when it comes to certain kinds of pain. I think I've always been afraid that halfway through it I would decide I couldn't take it all the way, and then I'd be left with half a tat. LOL!

Wrists sting, but it's nothing compared to toes or fingers. It's a stinging, burning sensation - and if you can get through the first few minutes, you'll be fine. You do adjust to it, especially with small pieces. Well moisturized skin takes ink better. And, a little trick? Take Advil or Motrin about a half hour before you get tattooed. Ibuprofen helps with the sting and the minor swelling.

Good tips! I'm still trying to read up on getting a first tattoo, and every tip helps! Thank you. I hadn't thought of taking something beforehand.. And well moisturized means lotion it up before going there, right? I assume they clean the area with alcohol or something before doing a tattoo?

I hadn't thought about moisturizing beforehand, but it makes sense. And pain meds is also a terrific idea. Since mine would be small, maybe I can screw up my courage and go for it!!

I like tattoos, probably going to get one of my own soon. I've been drawing and redrawing it on myself for over 6 months so at least I know that I don't mind having it there at this point.

i do not have tattoos...only because i have been unable to find one that speaks to me. i would hate to get one that i wasn't in love with. once that comes along, i will not hesitate.

tattoos are incredably sexy. hot. awesome. i love that like i love nipple piercings. love!!! they should be meaningful...but a beautiful design that means nothing to the person wearing it is still beautiful and sexy. a bad one is bad, but can always be reworked. swirling colors, blues, reds, purples, greens...the more color the better. although, sometimes a nice black design can be amazing. bigger is better. i love the ones that cover an entire side, beginning down the thigh, cutting up underneath the breast...from shoulder to shoulder, down the arms like sleaves...framing the breasts...

just fucking hot!
