What are your thoughts on pirating?

Is it really that harmful? What should be the penalties for doing it?

I did a lot of pirating my freshman year of college and after that I said I would try and buy everything legally. The few things I feel morally fine pirating are:

1. E-books that I already own in hard copy. Really, I'm not spending another 10 dollars per book to buy something I already own.

2. True Blood and Game of Thrones. I have HBO at university but not at home and since HBO doesn't have any kind of cheaper streaming service, I feel like they screwed themselves over. I can't afford to buy HBO at home for only a few months out of the year for one or two shows.

Overall, I think pirating is harmful. Artists put a lot of time and energy into their work (shows, movies, music, books) and if everyone is pirating, they don't see any financial support from that. I think sometimes letting people borrow a CD or a book can lead to them purchasing more of that artist's materials, but I think that's just as likely as those people asking you for the rest of it.

I personally don't like to pay for cable and we download or stream EVERYTHING we watch.

We're against pirating! We purchase netflix and watch movies off there. We don't really listen to music.

well, if you spent a year making a album and paying for studio time, whould you want someone stealing a copy from you without paying you a dime?

Against it, although I'm much happier when I don't have to buy the same thing multiple times.

I'm against it. I have Netflix for my movies and a Zune pass for my music.
