What kind of a housekeeper are you?

Riccio, you were doing well until you said "Valuable Documents." Back to paralyzed. It's thoughts like this that keeps me from doing it. "What if.....?"

I recently had someone help me clean out a closet that, like yours, hadn't been touched in several years.

The rule was that if it was a piece of paper, that I would look it over before it was thrown away--and it would be asked of me right then and there. I found that if I waited to go through them, I'd just leave them in an "I'll get to that later," pile for ages, so I paused and looked at it, and said to keep or toss, and then kept going.

All bags, etc., were gone through before being tossed in case there was something important in them.

Just a thought

I just want to put all of it into the yard and set fire to it. That's where I'm at with this right now.

I'm very organized but now that I just moved last month, it's been a bit messy. I have not been able to unpack everything and I am still unsure of where to put everything. O_o

Often, when I think of my housekeeping abilities, I think of a Roseanne episode where Dan is trying to get the kids to pick up the house before Roseanne gets home:

"Remember, we're only going for the 'illusion' of clean."

I tend to pile things by categories and go through it later. (My clutter rotates.) I leave things out and ready to use at my whim, but I vacuum and dust regularly and keep up with the bathrooms, etc. If I know I have company coming, I'll marathon clean for two days so everything's shiny. That's the point that said clutter gets moved into a room behind a closed door, only to be retrieved upon said company's departure.

It's my system and it works for me. Just call first. :p ~ Arms

Hello P'Gel,
I can't read the second pages at EF, because I have an old browser, an even older computer and no new money.

All I could read was that "valuable documents" left you paralyzed. Relax, my friend. All I meant was if there are tax returns, insurance contracts, passports and such like, do not throw them away.

Say "ciao," however, to old report cards, greeting cards from two years ago, loose photos, newspaper clippings and so on. (I use those as examples, because those are what I often set aside only to throw away at the end of the year.)

One more suggestion and then I'll shut up; DO NOT READ each piece of paper; just glance at it to see if it falls into your mutually agreed upon list, then toss it into the "keep" box or the rubbish bin.

Do not let "stuff" take over your lives! Resist! Fight back! Whose home is it, anyway; Yours, or a bunch of old papers, deflated beach and tennis balls and a never-to-come-back-in- style pair of sequined sneakers?

Go, girl! You have nothing to lose but your chains (of stuff that you do not need)!

Honestly, I'm horrible about keeping my room clean. I just don't seem to have the time or motivation lately. I really do need to remedy that.

I suck at cleaning house, and I have those piles where I know exactly where everything is. Unfortunately, my kids take after me. Fortunately, my husband is on the other end of the spectrum, and he cleans a lot. Sometimes too well, and I lose stuff.

Hahahaha. I love it. I loved the "old" Rosanne. (She's gotten really bitter and odd lately.)

"Remember, we're only going for the 'illusion' of clean."
That's about it.

I'm moderate. If I didn't have closets? I'd jump up to "very clean", haha. But behind closed doors...... Who sees it? Nobody. Exactly.

I'm clean. I like a clean house and being able to feel comfortable and not disgusted or cramped.

When I first married my ex and moved into a new house, I deep cleaned every week. We had always argued about cleanliness, he was a horrible slob and kept every little piece of paper and knick knack around. I'm a tosser. ie. haven't worn something in 6 months-get rid of it. Not used in my daily life, get rid of it. Crap laying on the tables and hung on the wall = dust collectors.
After arguing and fussing and living with someone on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, you get tired.
So, P'gell, I am one where the differences ended up ruining my marriage. We didn't have an intimate relationship what-so-ever. In the end he told me I needed to find someone as "anal" as I am about things.
Thank God, now, my bf is! lol
Our house is always clean. We have very litte hanging on the wall and not much sitting on flat surfaces. Mail is shredded daily or put into a filing cabinet. Dishes are done right after a meal (even though we have a dishwasher). And we probably do 3-4 loads of laundry daily (we have 2 boys {20 & 22} in the house and a dog)
I love him dearly and our sex life is out of this world. So, I guess, in my situation, it really does make a difference.

I tend to be a bit of a germaphobe and I will go on random obsessive cleaning binges, but I'm usually sort of disorganized. I'm a lot tidier when there's no one around but me, for some reason.

I'm not messy but I have pets (dogs and cats) and they definitely add to the fluff in the house. If I lived alone with responsibilities, I suspect my house would always be relatively clean but comfortable. That is, you would feel relaxed and able to put your feet up in my casa. I don't get hung up on the clean but I am not a huge fan of the clutter.

I think my room is so messy because I just don't have time, but the bed is always nice, comfy, and reasonably made for quick entry and availability of blankets.

I have 3 dogs, a cat, and 2 snakes. The snakes.. no problem. The cat is long haired, and one of the dogs is too. But either way, that much shedding? I have to vacuum daily. It's terrible, but there will be corners that fluffballs get caught in. So yeh, my house isn't like.. immaculate. But I clean it often. So I guess moderate.

I'm realllly not the most wonderful cleaner. at all. luckily for me the bf is somewhat of a fanatic so when he starts cleaning he doesn't stop until it's eatable.

I keep my room clean, but if I did the whole house, it'd be an uphill battle with these fools. Boys are so hard to clean up after, especially 21-year-old boys without parents.

Sigel is by FAR the best housekeeper of the three of us...but Arch and I cannot stand a dirty house. Our house may have some dust on a few surfaces but we are never caught in an "OMG you can't come in and see the house in this condition."

Hahah yes, that is about how we are too. Illusion of clean!

Actually right now it's not too bad. If I had 45 minutes I could run through and have this bottom floor pretty damn clean. It's a bit scattered right now since it's the end of the work week again and well..that means mommy has had no time to clean but kids have had lots of time to mess! The upstairs...well...surp risingly it's my youngest children who have their room clean. My oldest's room is a disaster and my husband and I have the hugest mess..ours is a huge clutter trap!

I was begining to wonder if i was alone in that confusion, I almost wanted to chose the horders option ('m a BIT of a pack rat, I have assignments I got stickers on in first grade, 17 years ago). but I've discovered I feel better doing the cleaning thing even while I'm busy hating it.

Our house is fairly clean on a day to day basis. There are usually dishes or papers about. It gets a really good cleaning about once a month depending on our schedule, but since only the two of us live in our house it is fairly easy to keep clean.

So, no one lives in the woods in a tent?

My Man and I (with some help from the kids) got the house fairly clean for Christmas. We have Christmas and New Year's Eve at our house and although there are pockets of clutter it looked good.

Now, the kids are back to just throwing things everywhere. I am torn between really wanting to keep the place beautiful and being one of those mothers and wives who screech at people for not taking off their shoes, not using coasters, leaving things lying around etc. Or being a martyr who just "does it all" and sighs audibly while resenting every thing. I would NEVER do the martyr thing and I don't want to be the Fish Wife, either.

A woman once said, "Trying to clean the house while children are growing up is like shoveling during a blizzard."

Did I mention my MIL (when she was here for the winter) used to actually go out in blizzards to "keep up with the mess." My Man does the same thing and it drives me crazy. He rushed me through SEX the last time in the morning we got an overnight blizzard because "I have to get out there and shovel." OMG.

I always heard the phrase that housecleaning is like threading a string that has no knot at the end. Definitely the same concept though.

And I would have the same reaction to rushing sex for snow! Oh hell no!
