What modern convenience can't you live without?

Contributor: Wicked Wahine Wicked Wahine
Well heck, this is going to be hard unless I rule out a few things, okay? These are already available to you & are not necessary to choose:

adequate shelter & heat
water & indoor plumbing -- includes sanitation supplies
power sources, e.g., electricity
food, food safety/preservation/pr eparation, e.g., refrigerator/stove/ove n, etc.
basic modern transportation, e.g., car/bus, but not luxury transportation

My choice is air conditioning

Central air and heat. A car. Internet.

The plumbing, heat, shelter, fridge, car, etc are all listed above as already provided. So, what OTHER stuff that's considered more of a convenience do you need?

I chose air conditioning because I cannot live without it due to allergies & a genetic condition. I figured I'd always have access to plenty of 'regular' books, so I could get by without the device to read them. But I was really torn about not choosing computer, +/- Internet!! I'm still waiting for someone to claim a sex toy!

Before yesterday I would have said my cell phone.

Today, I'll say our freezer. It's tiny (one of those split in "half" fridge/freezer types that a pizza box doesn't even fit in) but I've learned to appreciate it. It's almost on it's last leg but fortunately I was able to give it some CPR yesterday and it'll be ok til we get some parts in. Nothing sucks more than having to transfer all of your frozen food into coolers with ice with a fan in front of it and not having ice for your drinks. Nevermind that I'm always freezing anyways.. Yuck. Yea. Thank you freezer for not dying!!

Haha, ummm, well is what I keep something everyone else is privvy to or not? Because if I keep my phone or the internet but no one else has access to those things it would get kinda dull so I would choose something less socially driven like...ummm, modern medicine stuff. X-rays and such are pretty important

I have a few: hot, running water, air conditioning and heating, microwaves, and maybe the internet.

Computer+internet since running water and food and such are already included!

If those count as two things... A library full of only the best science fiction? Or an e-reader loaded full of books?

A very astute comment, mjtheprincess!

We will assume that many others selected the same optional convenience as you, therefore the Net would still be alive & well. For the purposes of this discussion, we will consider medicine & X-rays not to be conveniences, but necessities. We'll focus, rather on things that make our lives easier & more convenient.

Washing machine.

You will appreciate it when you find out it breaks in the middle of a cycle, and you don't have money to haul 60lbs of clothes to a laundromat, so you have to rinse and wring everything yourself.

No wonder grandma said the best gift she ever got from grandpa was her washing machine.

Aside from the things you listed as already available the only thing I couldn't do without would have to be books. Everything else I could get used to not having.

Ain't this the truth! I've had that happen before & if you don't get on it right away, they sour & you have a huge stinking mess, ugh! I was temped to include washing machine in with the necessities, but then I wondered if anyone else would think to choose it!
