What Type Of Window Treatment Do You Prefer?

Contributor: Wicked Wahine Wicked Wahine
A year ago, before I moved into my current house, I lived in a rental house in a neighborhood in transition (lots of tiny houses, close together, perfect for families starting out). Unfortunately, with the economy, most were sold & became rentals. That's when the problems began with unscrupulous landlords & unfit tenants; things went downhill fast.

I only mention this because one thing I had never seen before was the unusual window treatments people started using. I would see newspaper, bedsheets, towels, old clothes, tarps, paper towels, garbage bags, soap, you name it, all used in an effort to give some privacy or just to block light. The city finally passsed a window treatment law, listing exactly what could & could not be used for window coverings!

What do you use for your windows?

Most of our house has curtains. I however like the dark most of the time. In my office, I lined the outside of the window glass with velcro, and cut squares of black felt that perfectly fit the glass.

Now that is one I haven't thought of or seen before; very clever & not an eyesore!
I prefer the dark because of my migraines, so I have blackout shades on the windows, plus blackout curtains over those -- it works perfectly & is quickly reversible when I don't need the darkness.

Blinds with inside curtains on all windows except the living room where we have a pull cord drape across the picture and side window. They actually all came included when we bought the house but it is what I would install anyway if I had to purchase them.

Blinds to me offer more flexibility. You can go horizontal or vertical...

It depends on the room. I have one room which has wall art, and other similar items which I prefer to keep cool and dark. For that room I have draw curtains. For my bedroom I have vertical blinds, for ease of accessing sliding doors to the backyard. In some of the other rooms I have horizontal mini-blinds. They work okay, but I think often about replacing them. They seem to work best on the French doors.

I like blinds, and I also use darkening curtains if the room is still too bright.

I dont know what city you lived it that went and passed a law about what people could use in their own homes to cover their windows, but that is one sity I would move the hell out of as soon as I could. Talk about over reaching government.

We have mini blinds on all of our windows.
