When you fly, do you try and carry everything aboard or do you check bags?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
I have noticed more people carrying BIG bags aboard and not getting called on it. However, I hate checking bags too...then HOPING they actually get to my destination.

Do you try and carry everyone on with you, when you travel?

I don't want to drag stuff through airports and try and stuff things in overhead. I check bags.

I don't like a lot of hand-luggage, and I could never fit all the clothes I need for a trip into one of those bags designed to fit in the overhead lockers.

Unless I'm going for more than 4 days, I always try to limit myself to one bag and carry on.

I enjoy only having a carry on it cost less and I don't feel like dealing with bag check ect.

I've mastered being able to pack five days' worth of clothes in a weekender bag/case. It was before airlines started charging, so it was mainly so I could get off the plane and head straight to public transport instead of waiting another 45 minutes for baggage claim.

It definitely came in handy when airlines started charging for checked luggage. Listen to the llama.

My friends have a more interesting way - they mail stuff ahead. It's actually cheaper than what the airlines charge per bag.

I'm a huge overpacker. No matter what I do, I always end up packing too much. Luckily I've learned how to pack efficiently so sometimes I can just do a carry on. Usually I have to check a bag.

I try to avoid flying if at all possible, but will check bags when I do have to fly. The TSA makes me nervous though, so I prefer busses and trains. Especially trains.

It really depends where I'm going and how long I'm staying. If possible, I like to put everything into one carry-on (less to wait on and worry about) but if that's just not happening I'll check a bag.

I usually check. I don't like lugging luggage around. You have to take it into the food court and into the bathroom with you.

So far I have never gone anywhere by plane for less than one week. Seeing as how I can't go away for a week and put all the things I need in one bag, I just always check one. I do keep the things which I think are most important to me in a carry-on, but I inevitably have one to check. If I was going somewhere just for an overnight, I'd likely just do carry on.

We always try to stuff everything into our carry-on bags, unless it's a long trip and we need to pack more clothes...we don't have the patience to wait for our luggage to be unloaded.

I usually check a bag but that's cause it's my stuff and my husband's and it's usually for at least a week worth of travel time.

I've actually mailed my clothes an things to my destination beforehand, an before I leave again. Sometimes it's cheaper.

When we go to Haiti, we check two bags-with medicines, supplies, and food. We carry a carry on with all our personal stuff and a backpack to take to clinics.
When I fly otherwise, I try to get everything in the carry on so I don't have to mess with check baggage.

Most times I go for just a carry on, but there are times when that is impossible, like if I plan to go cycling. In that case since I have to check the bike anyway I tend to check in a regular bag as well. There have also been times where I thought the bag I had fit the requirements for check on only to be told at check in that they are just slightly too big, as in 1 inch too big. That was a real annoyance.

When traveling alone I carry-on. When the wife and I travel together I check a bag with her toys in it - no interest in explaining them to the TSA!
