Where do you get YOUR hair cut? Chain SALON, or local SALON or home service/family/friend?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
Just saw a financial report showing SPORT CLIPS and other large/chain hair cutting places growing faster then many other segments of retail. They are thus displacing the old "corner barber shop" and "beauty salon".

So, where do you have YOUR hair done.....Chain or Local? (Or other)?

I go to a locally owned Aveda salon. So a combo. The owner is local but Aveda is national.

Locally owned.

I will not let just some person touch my hair. They may not dye it, they may not trim it. It may be snooty, but I do not trust someone at a chain salon to have the experience and expertise necessary to do my hair properly. I have extremely thick and curly hair, most people, hair stylists included, have no idea what they're doing with it. They don't know how to cut it in a flattering way at all.

Currently, I go to a independent salon owned by an honest to god celebrity stylist who grew up in the area and after doing the new york/la thing for 20-30 years decided to settle down back home and open his own luxury/high end salon for us normal people. It's expensive but he saved my hair after it was basically ruined by a lesser hair stylist and everyone in the salon is friendly and generally fabulous.

Not sure you could pay me to go to sport clips or some other similar place. Nope

I actually cut/ dye/ style my own hair, so none of the above. I know exactly what I want my hair to look like, so I know I can't disappoint myself. And since I always get a million compliments on my hair, I know I must be doing something right.

I dye my own hair. My hair is thick and often long, so salons always claim they need "two or three bottles of product" which costs too much. We're talking starting at $70.00 at places like Super Cuts and going up beyond $250.00 at salons. I don't have that kind of money (and I can dye my own hair with ONE bottle of dye.)

For cutting, I usually go someplace fairly inexpensive. I've been to private, expensive salons, and I honestly don't see the difference between them.

However, I went to a chain a few days ago, to get my hair trimmed, and as usual, the girl asked "Do you want me to blow dry it?" Yeah, it was cold out, and my hair will kink up it is isn't dried. So, I said yes. I ended up being charged 3 times what I expected, as she charged me for "Wash, cut, style and blow dry." She didn't wash my hair (I wash my own hair) and this place always in the past would blow dry my hair for the same price as a cut. They changed owners recently, so maybe that's the difference. I tipped her anyway, she was only doing her job. I NEVER neglect to tip people who work hard, and she did do a good job on my hair.

I have long hair that can get really curly/frizzy, so I go to a locally-owned salon where they specialize in curly hair, which is more expensive than I'd like, but (1) I only go once or twice a year, and (2) it's so worth it, because they deal with it totally differently (e.g., cut it dry in chunks/locks that go with the curl) and that makes a huge difference for the 6-12 months between cuts.

When I was bald I buzzed my own head with clippers with an assist from a family member. When I had a mohawk, I had it done at Great Clips. Now I'm letting my hair grow and I don't cut it, or have it cut, at all.

I cut my hair myself, when I need to. I cut my hubbies hair and my sons also. I bought clippers for that, since they paid for themselves in one hair cut. I give my toddler a Mohawk all summer long, but allow it to grow in the winter. I plain to do the same with my 9month old. My toddler did not have his first hair cut until he was 1. My hubby, just likes a buzz cut like once a month. I take the scissors to my own hair an cut bangs or the dead ends, but never very much. The one time I did do that I hated my short hair. I look best with my long dark hair.

I trim and dye myself, but do go to a private salon to get my hair cut. I also am friends with the owner, we have known each other for years. I pay full price, but with no chain salons where I live you also do not have any choice. The closest chain is about78 miles away.

Last time, I went to a chain. I did go to a really affordable local salon for a while because I liked the stylist but I stopped liking her. Lately, I've been dying my hair myself but I do need a cut

Locally owned, but only once or twice a year. I trim my own bangs because I just can't stand paying someone to do something so simple.

I go to my elementary school friend's mom (owen small hairdresser salon). Been going to her for years and I got a nice discount. My haircut costs $2 The avg price here is something like $10 so it's really extra cheap. I've been spoiled, didn't know it was such a discount until people started to say wow. And she does a good job!

I get mine cut privately by someone who has become a friend. She only charges $15 compared to the rip off prices of $40+ at the large hair dressing chains!

I get my hair cut and permed at a Douglas J Aveda beauty school.

I've never had a problem and they've always been awesome.

I used dye my hair a lot, but I don't want to deal with perming it myself at home. I don't have a well-ventilated place to do so and it's a pain in the butt so I don't mind paying to sit back and relax while other people put a bajillion little curlers in.

Not sure whether mine would be considered chain or not. Lol. My short hair style is very hard to maintain and since my stupid hair grows like weeds in a garden, I need it trimmed at least every 3 months or it get totally crazy! Unfortunately, my trims which are 1-2 inch taken off ONLY the back of my hair (trimming to keep layers) every 3 months or every 2 months half an inch or a little bit more trimmed off the back went from $9 to $15 in the past 2 years! $15 to spend less than 5 minutes trimming the little inch from off my neck and the little bit of trimming to keep my layers choppy is way too expensive. I also highlight my hair every 4-6 months too. I've been dying, bleaching and highlighting since I was 9 years old so I do that myself. I'm not experience with cutting much though, but lately my partner has been doing my trimmings! Lol. He does darn good! I have him pull my hair through a cap and I do the highlighting. There's no way I'd pay to have that done. It's extreme and I use the same professional bleaching and spend about $4 for my bleach each time so I'm just going to continue doing it myself. I keep a large container of developer so that way I only need to buy the $4 bleaching powder every time. It looks just as good as if it were done in a salon.
