Point farming??

Stephanie Marie Stephanie Marie
In a support ticket I made I asked why I keep getting a box that pops up saying something about to much i.p. activity. The reply was something about it pops up to stop point farming. Well I do not think that is really fair or makes sense. I mean my brother and myself live at the same address and use the same computers. We are both on this site doing the review program. So same i.p. address. So what we get accused of point farming? Which I still dont completely understand even after the person sent me a link on it. I mean what about friends who live together or couples who are doing the review program?

I just dont really understand point farming and why I cant always do stuff on the site due to to much i.p activity. If someone could explain it more then giving me that EF link that is no help at all to me really that would be wonderful.

Thanks in advanced.

The pop up seems to me to be more about doing too many point-related actions within too close a time period. For example, if tried to rate 2 reviews within 15 seconds of one another, you might get that pop-up, whereas if you waited two minutes (enough time to actually read the review), you wouldn't get the pop-up. At least that's been the case with me when I realize I forgot to rate (or comment) on a review I've read and quickly go back and rate it.

Point farming refers to doing activities solely for the point value attached, rather than doing it earnestly.

It only shows up when you are doing multiple point garnering things in rapid succession; it happens to me when I queue up a few items to add them to my wishlist and don't wait in between.

You aren't being limited, except in that EF is asking you to wait in between activities.

The problem I've found is that the "clock" doesn't reset at a set amount of time. I've triggered the warning and literally logged out, shut off my computer, and come back a few hours later to only still get the warning. Other times I'll wait a minute and the warning is gone.

Yes I have noticed that. There are some reviews that I go to rate and get the pop-up. I will try again a few hours later and still get the pop up. I will go back in a couple days, still a pop up. One review I was getting the pop up for 4-5 days.

But when I supported the support ticket about it they said its due to point farming most likely from the same i.p. Which I didn't understand very much. So I asked and they sent a link.

We've had the same thing happen to us, and the system really goes nuts when we're both on here on separate computers.

Glad I'm not the only one this happens to! We were quite confused at first. But yeah, I appreciate all the thread replies. It cleared a lot up for me, especially what in the world 'point farming' means.

Sounds like they're just trying to cover their asses so people don't abuse the system. Not saying you are, but they have thousands of people visit this site every day and this is probably the only protection they have against people signing up for ten accounts and just going to town.

Yeah it seems to be more of a new bug though because you posted about it not that long ago (somewhere) and I remember thinking "bizarre". Fast forward to the other day, I try and vote on a review and blammo i get it.

I had not even done anything on here other than log in that day.

It is a good thing though for the douches to get the hint.

It would be nice if there were some sort of verification process to bypass these issues. It's certainly not horrible but it can be annoying. The negative effect is that I'm reading and rating fewer reviews because of it. I get frustrated and just stop reading.

I finally got the dreaded pop-up box last night. It scared me, lol. Granted I was trying to vote on 3 reviews I had previously read and mulled over what to vote them, so I was voting rather quickly. So I suspect that might be what caused mine to appear.

I was wondering about this too. It doesn't happen to me often but every now and then it pops up. Especially if my boyfriend comes on here right after I do.

I have yet to deal with this problem but it has to be something that the owners have to make sure is not going on. Im glad my gf has a different internet she goes onto here from.

I've not had this happen yet either. But I understand that EF would have to put some kind of a cap on those activities, otherwise it's totally not fair to them.

Never happened to me. I've never even heard of point farming until this post. I did wonder before how you could have a couple who used the same computer. Very informative here.

I notice I get that box frequently when... after I read a review I try and rate the review and then immedeately try and rate the editor as well. I think it's just because I try to do both too quickly so when I see the box I just wait a few minutes and then go back and rate the editor... no problems beyond that.

I notice this pop up if I try to read to many reviews of the same product and vote. Not sure why.

We get it almost every time we try to do anything on here! We get five actions then don't get any more points until the following day.

well, could you use a laptop/old PC system? each different set of ardware has a different IP address.

I think it's done to just try to stop people from only getting points rather than actually doing anything on the site. So if they were doing point gathering actions really close together and back to back, it might say that there is too much activity. But for the most part, I think that shouldn't be too much of a problem if there are a couple of minutes time between doing one action and doing another.

me and my room mate both do the site. She isnt as active as me, shes single lady just down on her luck staying with us, i showed her eden before she moved in and sometimes when im on Eden and shes on it on her laptop in her room, it gives me that pop up, I dont care about points really the pop up kind of bugs me, i just wanted to vote and let them know i thought it was a good review and any questions i had. i like reviews, or vote so i know if ive read them before when i stumble back onto them. I read so many i begin to read them over again at one point or another...

My room mates and I have experienced this as well so I am so glad someone started a post about it. We share the same router for our internet so I am sure that bottlenecks some of the IP activity (all of us are EF fans), but I have also run into this problem on blazingly fast internetelsewhere. When the internet is just that responsive then I am moving at a faster pace so EF gets suspicious when I am able to do so many things back to back. Not a huge issue but I have learned to pace myself since I love to rate reviews and read about new stuff and give feedback. Try using EF at different times or turn the popups off.

This is exactly why my roommate seldom goes on here anymore, except when i tell her to read my new review or this and that is new on here. it sucks, because she would be in her room and me in the computer room and since her lap top is connected to my wi-fi... same ip and if she just did something on here, and i go to do something i get the pop up or vice versa..

it sucks, but you can't blame eden for trying to prevent the point farming...

is this true? if we put a net connection in her room and connected her laptop to the cable modem too, we would have different IP's?

If it's all the same internet that's coming into your home, it's all one IP address. Different machines can use the same IP address. You'd have to get a separate internet connection to have a separate IP address.

I got the box message today! I'm the type to browse and when I see things I like, I just open them in different tabs and alternate so I guess that must've set them off.

As much as it is annoying, I can understand why they have this.

I've never seen IP popup. But I don't think my IP is the same one for more than a few minutes.

happened to me today and then 10 seconds later it was gone. the one thing I am guilty of is 'liking' a whole list of stuff but that gets posted to facebook so thats free advertising right?

I've gotten it when I open tabs of many reviews. (I'm a total Tab Queen, I have dozens of tabs open all the time.) I read SUPER fast, so sometimes, apparently, I rate short reviews too quickly. I just need to slooooow doooooown.
