From the article: Not satisfied with fumbling through Americans’ private possessions, one TSA screener saw fit to make a humiliating joke about the contents, writing a personal message on a TSA inspection note after finding a sex toy in writer Jill Filipovic’s luggage.

After arriving at her hotel, Filipovic was unpacking when she discovered her bag had been individually searched by a TSA screener who, having seen the “personal item,” saw fit to comment, writing “GET YOUR FREAK ON GIRL” on the reverse side of an inspection notice.

“Total violation of privacy, wildly inappropriate and clearly not ok, but I also just died laughing in my hotel room,” wrote Filipovic.

She's since filed a complaint with the TSA.

So, how do you feel?

Inappropriate, but funny. Reprimand, but don't fire the employee.

Sometimes people lose their heads and do stupid things. If it was something this TSA employee does on a frequent basis, they should be dismissed.

HAHA that would be funny. It is inappropriate. Maybe he should get a suspension but not fired. And maybe some sexual harassment classes. Just so he would think twice before doing again.

Agreed, inappropriate, but pretty damn funny. I'd be a mixture of mortified and laughing.

I know that the luggage gets inspected at random intervals, but that does not give any employee the right to leave a personal note in anyone's luggage. It was not his place to make a comment on what was in the luggage. If it was contraband, confiscate it. Otherwise, keep your hands off, and your mouth shut.
P.S. That is another reason only fly for personal emergencies.

if the employee was a pizza hut employee or the like, that would be funny. as they're a high profile employee at near government level (or is TSA the government? i dont even know) they should be fired.

this is completely inappropriate.

I'd be very uncomfortable with it. Part of why I am able to be comfortable with TSA is because it's handled professionally- when people step past that boundary and make it personal, it becomes a very skeevy invasion of privacy.

Ew. No, that is so not ok. That employee doesn't need to be working at their current job anymore.

Funny, but definitely inappropriate.

Being someone who works in the mental health field, I can think of a dozen jokes on a daily basis referring to insanity/craziness, but I don't, because I know it's a jab at people's dignity.

TSA workers are dealing with extremely private matters and as such, they should maintain a completely neutral tone. Their job is to monitor what goes through - not to form an opinion about the person towing it.

It'd be like if a gynecologist looked in between your legs and whistled "Whoo-wee, that's a biggun'."

That sounds like an excellent way to get fired.

I don't think most people would disagree that it is completely inappropriate on the employee's part. I honestly do think they should be fired, but I can see why some people would think that was a bit extreme.

I'd say just a warning to the employee.

The TSA are invading our privacy already as it is. It was totally uncalled for and highly inappropriate for anyone to leave a message like that. If we cannot trust them to be professional and take their jobs seriously, how can we trust them with a job as important as defending us against terror threats? I'd be incredibly furious if this were to happen to me.

I'd say suspension and warning, perhaps? I'm kinda torn on this. Yes, it's pretty funny. It's also an invasion of privacy and inappropriate. I kinda hate TSA already and won't fly in fear of getting groped by security. I really don't want them leaving little notes about what they think about what's in my luggage now, too.

Depending on the policies of the company, he could be sued for sexual harassment, and more than likely fired.

Though it'd be funny to see what one writes if I had some of my bad dragon dildos in my luggage and it was searched, lol. Open bag and suddenly horse and dragon dick, lol.

It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't such a sensitive position. As it is I think the TSA worker needs to attend a long and boring sexual harassment training program as punishment.

One warning, if it happens again, fired! One time losing your head and being goofy can be explained and forgiven. Losing passengers due to their 'jokes' unforgivable.

While I do think it was inappropriate for the job, I don't think I would have reported it myself. However, there are others out there who are embarrassed to even own a toy, and that's who you have to think of and protect.

It would totally creep me out... I would wonder what exactly they might have done to the toy or something like that.

I seem to get my bags tossed every time I fly. I don't think it was funny, but I also don't think the person should lose their job. No one was physically hurt or injured and the only reason this is a public matter is because the complainant made it so. If I had received that in my bag, I probably wouldn't have report it. Had I been told that I was going to hell for having it in my bag, then I would have. I'd probably only take a toy if I had a carry on anyway. I'd be more worried someone would try to take the toy out of my bag to "save me from myself" as some of my books have gone in the past.

They should lose their job in my opinion. It may be funny to one person, but embarrassed to another. The worker, I assume, had no idea whose it was, and how they would react.

I don't really see how it's "humiliating"

She did pack the sex toy in a bag that she knew was subject to inspection. So the fact that the worker made it known that he saw the sex toy instead of everyone pretending nooooo one saw it doesn't really change anything in my mind.

With that being said, I don't think it was professional at all, and I'd give the worker a warning.

I agree with this. If this is a frequent thing for this employee, then something should be done along the lines of "you're fired get the hell out".

Had I seen this in my luggage, I probably would've giggled about it and not taken it to heart, even if they hadn't meant it as a light-hearted joke, it's still just silly to me. I wouldn't have been offended, and I know that people go through my luggage, probably make comments among one another, etc and to me I'd rather they leave a note than talk about it behind my back so to speak.

I would've just taken this as a silly joke; it reminds me of something one of my friends might do.

Yeah I agree while one has to be aware that you're luggage will be searched (which in itself gives me the willys) something about a stranger handling my toys, potentially showing them to others as a joke, and doing who knows what with them irks me. I don't think this person should be fired if its their first offense but at least reprimanded so they learn not to do it again to someone who would be more sensitive of receiving a note.
Also I don't know about you all but it was written on the back of an inspection notice? Come on doesn't it irk you that someone with that is supposed to be A)Protecting National Security and the like it leaving this letter on the clock B) Doing so on TSA stationary???
