Can Animals Be Gay?

Contributor: M121212 M121212
I just read this great article from the New York Times... It's from last year, but if you haven't seen it already I highly recommend checking it out. It's about how homosexual-type activities have been observed in several animals including Albatross. It's also about how those observations by biologists have been picked up by the media, activists and others within the conversation about human homosexuality in America.

It's a long article, but I found it fascinating. I'd love to hear what others think about this article!

I remember when I heard about Roy and Silo at the Central Park Zoo in Manhattan. At first I found it amazing, and yet extremely sad. Especially when I started reading about how they kept trying to incubate an egg together. Even though this was back in 2004, I'm happy they did finally get the chance to hatch a fertile egg.

I don't see why not. My two female Labs are Bi, they hump and lick each other all the time. This only gets the male dog excited. lol Good thing he is to small to really get some.

I think my girl german shepard is gay...for me! I like to wear dresses around the house; with no panties. She tries to get all in my business! I have 2 male dogs that I have no problems like that at all with. Weird huh?

My ex had two gay male cats that were interested only in each other, not for any of the other female cats around.

I once had a gay dog & according to a study by a Reproductive Physiologist at my University..female rabbits exposed to neighboring brothers in utero display "male-exclusive" behaviors such as mounting other female rabbits. Interesting.

Hehe sometimes I get questions concerning this at the pet store I work at, and it's always fun to watch people's reactions when I explain that, yes, homosexual behavior exists elsewhere in the animal kingdom.

Animal sexuality is interesting, and there's a lot out there on it.

Lol. Dogs hump eachother cuz its fun and sometimes to be dominant. I dont think animals can be gay tho, I think their instinct is to reproduce so they will want to spread their seed where it will be best used. A male dog cannot use semen like a girl dog can. Their instinct is to mate with the opposite sex. Humans however are different in this area, they have lust and love for pleasure, not for reproduction. And yes, pigs, dogs, and dolphins hump cuz its fun, but not because they are sexually attracted to the same sex.

So, more of them being bi, rather than being gay?

I remember a study where rats in a study showed homosexual preferences when they became over populated. Just as they were going to start running out of foo, like a lightswitch they became disinterested in the females. Super interesting!

That's quite interesting. You know, once I heard this ridiculous think that homosexual couple's animals will also develop homosexual behavior. I personally find a lot of that to be BS. For once, animals operate on animal instincts. They have sex because they were designed to reproduce, and so they shall - even if it's accidentally with a male animal. It has nothing to do with homosexuals around them.

There's a lot of theories, and they range, but I don't read too much into them simply because it's something that us, as humans, will never fully be able to understand.

I've seen a lot of articles about homosexual behavior being observed in other animal, I'm not too surprised. It's exhibited in humans who are animals when you get down to it s why not other animals?

There are a lot of animals that display exclusively gay behaviors, though. For example, approximately 8% of rams (male sheep) are gay. Not bisexual - gay.

Some might argue that this is a flaw, but one could also argue that it's a fantastic method of population control. It doesn't add to the population, but still provides other benefits (i.e., nurturing rejected offspring, controlling other animal populations through predator/prey, and so on).

There are actually very few animals that don't engage in homosexual activity.

I've not given this too much thought, to be honest...but I'd have to say that I agree they can be. Humans aren't the only beings who can be gay!

There are a lot of documented circumstances of it, fo sho! Who knows what's going on inside their heads, but at the very least, plenty of animals exhibit plenty of homosexual behavior.

I've heard that every species has engaged in it, actually. Sound crazy, but not untrue.
