I was reading up on Sex Worker's Rights Day (March 3rd! I missed it.) and found out that carrying condoms in New York can be used as evidence of prostitution. A good article can be found here. What do you guys think?
I personally think it's disgusting. Having sex for money should be evidence of prostitution, not condoms. Making people think twice about having safe sex wont stop prostitution, only make it more dangerous.
That is absolutely ridiculous. If someone wants to carry around 47 condoms in their purse they have the right to do so. There are many diseases out there that can be prevented.

I definitely think that's a bit ridiculous. Having condoms only proves that you're having safe sex, not that you're getting paid to do it. There's already too many people that probably should be using condoms but aren't, so there's no reason to make them question whether or not they should. I agree with thrill, that making people think twice about having safe sex will only make prostitution more dangerous.
The worst part is that this creates an incentive for prostitutes to not carry condoms, which makes the problems inherent to the trade, and the reasons for making it illegal, even more dangerous to public health.
if they did id be a prostitute.. LOL and secondly, i think it would be sickening to find out they are doing this alone, but to find out they wont carry condoms because it may get them in more trouble is just ... well... troubling

I wouldn't advise routinely carrying around 47 for most people (because they do degrade over time), but given that we have places giving them away in the hopes that it will slow down STI/STDs we probably shouldn't be discouraging it.
This is sick! So I'm in a loving relationship with my boyfriend (we live in New York) and we each carry a condom or two in our wallet. We aren't ready for children. So if I'm wearing a low-cut midriff tank top and short shorts one hot day and a cop stops me and asks to see my ID, and a condom falls out of my wallet, he can charge me with prostitution?! That makes me really angry...!
Who can we write about this ridiculous law...? Anyone know? I'm... more upset than I expected to be over this! I am NOT a prostitute! T^T
This is probably one of those cases where an old law is still on the books, and no one has gotten around to changing it. I agree that it should be changed, but I don't think the legislators are evil people for allowing it to persist. I can't imagine a judge admitting that as genuine evidence, unless the condoms had "for my johns" written on them. I think this is being blown a little bit out of proportion.
Stupid law...doesn't even begin to come close to sensible. Not that I agree that prostitution should be illegal, but to have a law that would scare people into not carrying condoms for fear of being charged is idiotic.
If I was called to court as a suspected prostitute on the evidence I was carrying a condom would I be ok with this? No, nobody should. Also, the government should be arresting the pimps and customers, these women are desperate and trapped, not criminals.
Now that I must say is a bit ridiculous. I mean, I'm not for prostitution, but I'd be looking for other reasons for evidence! Condoms are not any accurate way to do this. & That just means less people will have condoms when they NEED them. Ugh... not a wonderful idea... at all!
