DEEP THROAT

Contributor: ~LaUr3n~ ~LaUr3n~
Deep Throat was a prolific pornographic movie that was released in theaters in 1972. It was the first time this had ever happened and caused quite a controversy. However, it was one of the most profitable movies ever made. It was made for $25,000 and grossed to make $600 million.

At the time it was a huge deal. The government tried to shut it down and ever prosecuted the actors for attacking "the American core". People were outraged that the government and conservatives were trying to stop this sexual revolution and take away their right to see this move if they so chose.

My question is to those of you who saw it when it was released or shortly after (still in the 70's). I wasn't even born then, but I wanted to hear from those who were. What were your feelings about it even if you didn't see it. If you did, did you face any ridicule because of it? have you changed your opinion?

Well - I'm old enough to have been in college when it first came out. It was a huge source of sophomoric jokes and a pretty big phenomenon. Actually the more scandalous part of Deep Throat was the anal sex scene they slipped in. Aside from John Homes, the male actors in the 70s were not that large compared to today so deep-throat was not a huge challenge for the 'pros'.

What's funny compared to today is all the hair! I hated picking pubes from my teeth - so when trimming and shaving hit the scene my oral sex activity - on both fronts - went way up!

My parents were 12 and 13ish so they were too young to see NC-17.

I have not actually seen the film. Just this awesome documentary on it.

Did you ever see cops outside any of the theaters? If you don't mind me asking, did you see it in New York City?

No cops - I saw it in Philly - more than once! I think you can still buy it - but honestly it's pretty bad compared to modern production values.

I've never seen Deep Throat myself. I don't really have a desire to since there are so many choices available today.

I was just an extremely young toddler when it came out; so, of course, I don't remember it!

I was about 3 or 4 months old, so I never saw the movie, but I have seen the documentary you are talking about Inside Deep Throat and it's a fascinating look at not only the controversy surrounding the movie release, but the attempts by many porn film makers to make "mainstream porn."

They didn't have NC-17 ratings back then. It was rated X, like Midnight Cowboy.

I've seen it and apart from pure novelty reasons, there isn't anything to write home about. Linda Lovelace kind of became the poster child for anti-porn groups. Porn stars back then were infamous for having rougher lives than Lindsay Lohan, like John Holmes' crime spree and the fact that he dated and had sex with an underage girl he conned into helping him commit crime.

In my eyes, just because porn is more available and widely accepted, it's still the same. The only things that have changed is the hairstyles and the fact that if you literally Google anything, you'll find porn.

I've never seen it, but HIGHLY support this!

Why is rape and violence shown openly to young kids in theaters and at home and yet something beautiful isn't? How is that right? I'd love to see a change. I'd rather show my own daughter porn than a sick violent movie. Movies like that made me a wreck and gave me nightmares. They also made me terrified of men my whole life. They helped to cause my PTSD, and sometimes, they make it worse. Erotica helps me to overcome that and to see the beauty of the female orgasm and the males as well, and it's beautiful mutual, and sexy.

That's really cool that you saw it in Philly. Unless you saw it at 22nd & Market, the theater is probably gone now. In the last 10-15 years they have cleared out most of the adult stores and theaters.

(I have seen the movie, but I was not born yet at the time of its theatrical release. The documentary 'Inside Deep Throat' is pretty good!)

I haven't watched it in whole but I have seen bits of it. My husband rented it (I think late 80's) to see what it was all about. We heard all the ranting and raving when it first came about how obscene it was. By the time he watched it everything in it was more common place. Well at least in the porn world!
