Do you believe abstinence only education REALLY works?

Definitely not.

No. I don't. Comprehensive sex education is far more beneficial.

My favorite sex-ed class was in 6 grade where our text book was a book called "it's perfectly normal." I recently looked it up and apparently its a very controversial book because it talks about all options and and doesn't say its right or wrong to have sex. Our teachers were very open, we could ask whatever questions we wanted. I later went to a highschool where sex ed consisted of being given chastity rings and being told sex before marriage was bad. No one from my 6th grade class was pregnant before highschool graduation as far as I know. A surprising number from my catholic highschool were.

What should be taught in school is responsibility, taking responsibility for ones action, the whole concept of consequences, living with consequences, how to make informed ... more
The problem with *just* teaching kids how to make informed decisions is that they need a place to get reliable, scientific information. Not only do many parents not want to give their children such information, many of them don't even HAVE it themselves. If sex ed isn't taught in schools, then the only kids who will get sex ed are the ones whose parents both HAVE good info and WANT to share it with them. Oh, and who have a good, open, communicative relationship with their children, such that the kids will listen to their parents.

That would leave a LOT of kids in the dark about sex. Even more than there are currently.

In my high school, we didn't have sex ed until our senior year! Most of the students had had sex by then. The most disturbing convo was when the teacher said that pulling out is 100% effect because of pre-cum. A kid got all freaked out, screamed "are you serious?!" and then he ran out of the room. Apparently, a girl he was with said she was pregnant, but he said it couldn't be his because he had pulled out... Turn out, it was his.

I don't think I've ever come across any evidence that it does work.

I don't mind teaching abstinence. It was the best BC method for me for a long time! But no, I do not believe that abstinence-only education works.
Tons of studies have shown that kids are going to have sex even if they're told not to (shocking, right?), and that abstinence-only sex ed doesn't prevent kids form having sex, it prevents kids from having safe sex.

no way. kids are going to experiment no matter what, so we might as well educate them on how to be safe.

No, no and no again it doesn't work. It's silly and infantile and shows a lack of acceptance and trust for young people. Give then the REAL truth and empower them to care for themselves and their bodies.

No and it makes me really sad that so many people end up having kids too young because they've been taught that birth control is ineffective.

No no no no no. You need to learn that sex is not evil and how to take care of yourself.

I was raised that way, it doesn't work. However, I have only had sex with one person, but it was before we were married. But no, it doesn't work.

Abstinence only education is a terrible idea.

Tell kids it's ok to abstain, but expect that most wont. All information should be open and available to everyone. Deciding to withhold information that can affect someones entire life, should be a criminal offense.

I just completed a class in school on early education and studies have show that abstinence education classes have almost no effect on the students over a 3 year period where full sex education which deals with contraceptives and condoms has a significant success rate.

Good education is what works. Knowing what really happens to our bodies & during sex & what the outcomes are is the only way to make good decisions regarding sex. Knowing truthful facts is the only thing that will work effectively.

Honestly, this question just isn't open to debate with the ridiculous number of studies that have been done. "Abstinence only education works" has about as much scientific and factual validity as "The sun revolves around the Earth." Maybe you have other reasons for supporting abstinence-only ed (though I'm unlikely to find any of those persuasive), but as a matter of hard fact, it does not reduce teen pregnancy and it does not reduce teen sex (it's actually correlated with significant increases in both).
