A general open ended question, that came into my head after reading two nuke related stories today: How do you feel about nuclear weapons?

Nuclear weapon is the most stupid idea ever found in earth history. Just one button press will remove millions of life, forests, animals, polluted air and water ..

I really like this explanation. I also find them pretty stupid.

Well, Moein pretty much summed up my thoughts on it, too.

I used to think they were pretty great - an awesome tactical, strategic, and defensive weapon. Now the only thing I see any use in them for us defense, and only because others have them. they served a use - but it was a deal with the devil, and we're stuck with them now. that's a damn shame...

we're in a war. a war against the earth and we need the earth to know we can kill her in an instant. we have the capability, wherewithal and willingness to kill all life and if she doesn't stop with the natural disasters we might just do it.

no two nuclear democracies have gone to war since the advent of nukes. assuming no one is crazy enough to actually use nukes, it effectively removes war as a weapon when dealing with other nations. had there not been a nuclear arsenal following WWII it is likely that WWIII would have escalated, if not from the Korean war, at least from initial tension from the sixties through the 1970's.

nuclear weapons do have the capability to annihilate vast tracts of land, kill hundreds of thousands, even millions of people--there is no denying that fact. however, they also have saved millions of lives to date. the purple heart medals that the government issues today are the same ones they built and kept in stockpiles for use after the eventual invasion of japan in WWII. the only thing that kept those medals from being awarded in 1945, was the nuclear weapons that were dropped. furthermore, maintaining a stockpile is needed, due to various countries (ie, iran, north korea) that are attempting to develop these weapons. maintaining the ability to react the same way, if not stronger, to an attack, is the ONLY way to ensure that they will not have to be used.

Very bad, I hope I never see the day it comes down to that.

Seems like now they're being used as tools for keeping certain countries at bay: Don't piss us off or we'll nuke you... The whole thing seems like a Catch-22... I don't like the idea.

Well... if you could go back in time and un-invent them the world might -might be a better place without them. However, you can't. And no matter how much you hope, pray, beg, wish, vote, lobby or plead they will never be gone totally from this world. To many nations have seen them as the key to remaining a sovereign nation in modern times and are racing to develop or expand their programs. No...we cant take them away from other countries except by force of arms and no they won't just give them up on their own. Sactions don't work and neither does the U.N. or a peace movement because most nations really don't give a shit what their people want. If you assume for a minute that if we get rid of ours or agree to get rid of ours first as an example for them to follow you live in a false (though I wish it could happen) reality that about half the world would not immediately make it their entire focus and effort to destroy us as a nation and as a people. Sadly they serve as a deterrent...all but an ugly one we wish we never had much like a angry pitbull on a chain. But they are truly the only deterent that works. We as a nation no longer have the ability to protect and defend ourselves based on our non nuke military alone without that final backstop of protection that no nation wants to cross. They will one day be replaced by something even more terrible to continue to keep nation-states in their positions of power and existence in this world. The only good part about ours - they ate the most high tec, safest and controlled in the world compared to the unstable ones many up and coming powers are now just inventing. Im sorry to those who wish we didn't have them and to those who want them gone but that is not ever going to happen. I just pray along with you that they are never again fired or dropped in anger and only serve as a silent deterent to keep us free and to keep others from ising theirs.

I said might because without them we very likely would have had the fight with foreign troops on pur own soil by now or certainly at some point in the future. In World War 1 Germany approaced Mexico with a proposal to take up arms against us and declare war against the United States. The Mexican General who was assigned by the then President of Mexico determined in his report back that if they were to do so it would be unsuccessful and do to the vast number or wide spread and well armed citizens within the United States even in the absense of the American military who were mostly deployed in Europe fighting the Germans at that time. All public information... look it up. By the way the information didn't initially come to light from Mexico - it was brought out by the British who intercepted the coded transmission to the German embasy in Mexico for delivery to the President of Mexico. Germany offered Mexico the States of Texas, Arizona and New Mexico I do believe as their reward fro declaring war on us and attacking us while our troops where deployed in Europe for when we fell. Mexico didn't admit it until years later that this ever happened. Kinda makes you think a bit about how fragile we could be as a country.

If nay one is wondering what the articles that inspired this thread where it was these two;

Report: Russia Nuclear Disaster Narrowly Averted In Submarine Fire: link

Air Force official fired after 6 nukes fly over U.S. link

You know I really don't like seeing the word accidentally in the same article as nuclear warhead . Makes you wonder if when all is said and done it will be our stupidity and not a hostile nation that ends up causing a nuclear arms disaster.
