I heard these terms today and didn't know what they meant. Because they might be offensive to others, I am going to use the terms Gaygal and Lesbro (alternatives I found). i apologize if this offends anyone.
Basically these terms are used to describe a straight individual who prefers to date homosexual individuals in the pursuit of trying to turn them "straight" again.
Do you consider yourself one of these? Have you even heard of the term?
It's like a very orthodox or traditional way of seeing how things "should" be. It really pisses me off actually. In the past homosexuals were considered as having psychological problems and therapy was introduced to change their sexual orientation but that is just unethical.
If someone feels that this type of behaviour is moral, maybe they are right to the extent that their beliefs put this type of behaviour as moral but to me it is utterly immoral.
Imagine waking up and everyone around you is gay. They think you are crazy and disgusting for being straight and everyone wants to force you to change and to fit in. When being straight is just natural for you. You are being discriminated against on something that you can't really change, that is not fair. Thats what happens all the time and I am sure it is much worse than this simple metaphorical story.
*gets up to get some tea to calm my nerves*
Anyways, I have never heard of this and I am dispointed that some people would actually do this.
I've only heard fag hag used to describe a woman who happens to hang around with a lot of gay men, or one in particular, thus becoming that man's "hag". Never in the context of trying to get them to "turn straight again". There's a whole bunch of terms for it, "fruit fly" is another one I've heard, if you're using "hag" in the context I'm familiar with.

I've heard of the term 'Fag Hag', however it was used by a stage performer - Penny Arcade. She had a one woman show entitled 'Bitch, Dyke, Fag Hag, Whore' but before anyone gets upset she used each of these 'nasty' names in a positive way in reference to herself.
It was such a long time ago that I saw her perform but I remember that what she was highlighting was the fact that despite the negative connotations of these particular terms she was incredibly proud to be each and everyone of them & that people should embrace what they are and love themselves.
Whilst this story isn't directly about the issue your talking about I just wanted to explain my vote (I'n still in contact with her girlfriend so I still hear those terms and whenever I hear bitch the other three terms follow it albeit silently within my head)

I totally didn't even think of it that way lol. I bet some do do it for that reasons, but the movie I was watching had it differently. The female character thought she was THAT good and got a trip off of turning guys straight again.

There is a movie called Fag Hag from the 1990's.
The term, when I heard it today, was form the show Rescue Me.
The other terms are from Wiki when my boyfriend looked it up to find less offensive terms.

I have heard it this way also.
But I do know one individual that thinks she can turn gay men and it annoys me to no end.

This. Maybe it's a geographical thing but fag hag simply means a female-identified person who enjoys male homosexuals as friends or makes a point to befriend them around these parts. It's odd but it's really a term of endearment methinks.

the show and the performer I knew was playing on the first meaning. Apparently she was friends with Andy Warhol or one of his co-horts and they called her his F Hag

I agree, I've only ever heard of it used this way. I think sometimes the girl started out having a crush or might still have a crush, but they aren't trying to 'turn them straight'. I had a friend in high school who called herself a 'fag hag' as did her gay friend and many others, but like Adriana said, it was more of a term of endearment. I've never known anyone who tried to 'turn anyone straight'.
I've heard the words before but honestly never cared to put a meaning to them. When I heard each it was in a derogatory manner. I simply filed them in the brain as unnecessary and not something I'd never use.
What? I've heard of these, but I never heard of those definitions. I've heard that a fag hag is a female that tends to have a lot of gay male friends, and a dyke tyke is a guy that has a lot of lesbian friends.
Margaret Cho proudly calls herself a fag hag and she has no intention to try and turn them straight. I too am called a fag hag by a lot of my friends because I am predominantly heterosexual and I absolutely love and support the gay community. I also have a lot of gay men in my circle of friends.

Yep, this is how these terms are generally used. Like a lot of loaded words, it depends on the context and who's using the terms. Some queer people accept and use this kind of phrase affectionately, though it could easily be derogatory coming from the wrong sort of person.
I've heard of the terms before but never to mean what you describe. For example, a fag hag is a straight woman who hangs out with gay guys with absolutely no intention of "converting" them. Margaret Cho is a self-proclaimed fag hag and describes it perfectly: giving make-up tips, having girl talk, taking them to prom (oh I so did that with a gay friend before he came out).
But I've never heard these terms applied to people who try to convert others. That's disturbing and shame on them!

I should have finished reading the thread before posting. So ditto, twistedfinger!

OOOooooohhh! In that sense, not a cruel "your sexual orientaton is wrong, you must change" sort of way, lol.
Sounds stupid to me - I don't have to convert others to change. I take people as they are, if they're not my type - or me theirs, just move on - life's too short.

I'm sorry! I totally misdirected the conversation with my interpretation of what was meant. You should read the other posts which will be more insightful than mine which is just a rant about my opinion on something totally out of my mind, sorry
It doesn't mean what I interpreted it be but rather "a woman who happens to hang around with a lot of gay men" as Julia puts it!

I've never heard of fruit fly, but I happen to like it.
I too have heard of the term fag hag to mean a woman who hangs around gay men and is therefore their 'hag'. I also had a gay husband once...this is not to say he was gay but married me for his aunts inheritance or that I successfully changed his mind to come over to the 'straight' side...he was like my husband in that we shared an intense bond, never sexual, and he was very much my best friend. I consider this to be much more personal than a fag hag or anything of the like.
I have heard the terms before, and about women trying to turn gay men straight or men trying to turn lesbians straight. I think that is awful, since it could really mess with someone's mind. I would never try to turn a gay man straight. That is way too forceful.
