i've met a few that way... always a public place, make sure someone knows where your going and who your meeting, and take your own car so if you feel uncomfortable you can leave!!

Definitely public. I met my boyfriend online. When we first met in person we met up at the train station and went to a cafe to talk for a while. Then we saw a movie together before heading to a restaurant.
