Are you common-law married?

Contributor: puppylove puppylove
How many of you out there live with your partner as if you are married, partaking in benefits of a married couple such as tax breaks or claiming your partner as your spouse on insurance without having the actual wedding ceremony/wedding certificate?

My partner and I are "common law" married, no real wedding ceremony yet in our state we would have to go through divorce court to break up. We own property together, claim each other as spouse for insurance purposes, etc. I am not pleased with this arrangement, I want the wedding, the white dress, the flowers, etc, but the cost of all that hoopla is a limiting factor. Any one else out there like us?

Common law hasn't been on the books since 1990 in my state.

Wow, Florida abolished common law marriage in 1968. I thought it was way later than that.

We are.... been together 16 years with 3 kids together. No plans on ever going official for us. We tend to travel and move a lot, so our "legal" status changes depending on where we live.

We'll get married someday, but we're not engaged as of now. We've been together 3 years and do talk about it.

I live in Colorado, one of the easiest states to be 'common law' married in, I have done a bit of research when contemplating a move to FL, there are some states that will recognize a common law marriage that was established in a state that allows it before the move to a state where it is not allowed (like Florida) if that makes sense.
