Do you and your partner use pet names?

Contributor: tigerkate tigerkate
I was reading an article yesterday on SexIs that said a new study came out saying people who use pet names take away the "mystery" factor in their relationships and can suffer from boring sex lives.

Or something along those lines, anyway.
So I got to wondering, do you and your lover use terms of endearment frequently?

We use pet names all the time. We hardly ever call each other by our real names. It's usually "baby" or "bay" or "boo". Our sex life is definitely on fire. We have friends come over sometimes and join us and they just can't get over how much we love fucking each other and are continuously amazed by each other. Our friends envy us, lol.

I read the article and laughed out loud.

I once shouted "Baby!" in a crowded bar and my husband immediately turned his head. The guy standing next to him then commented how he wished his wife would call him baby.

It's ridiculous to assume that something like that has an effect on sex. I find it to be much more intimate and far less formal. Only my mother calls me by my name and only when I'm in trouble.

My husband calls me Darlin' or Babe. I call him Honey or Baby. We call each other by name too, but not as much as the others. Our sex life is definitely on fire, not that our nicknames have any bearing on that. I agree with Ansley, it is more intimate. No one else on this planet calls me Darlin' or Babe except my husband.

I thought that research study was really... just odd.

I mentioned it to my boyfriend, and he said that it might be a symptom, but not a cause for a dull sex life... Like, maybe they were trying to figure out a "factor" in boring sex lives, and they found something that a few couples had in common... Or that maybe people use pet-names as terms of intimacy, because they feel like they need something additional (to boost intimacy) because of a lacking sex life.

I don't know if that makes sense.

My boyfriend and I call each other "babe" all the time. We actually have a specific tone too, we make fun of ourselves now saying: "Hey baaaabe?"

We don't use them and personally I don't like it at all. Sounds too meaningless if you use them every day.

More than just the occasional "honey", and our sex life it pretty awesome, but this has been a running joke between us. We constantly try to one-up each other with the cheesiest pet names. It's kinda awesome...

We have all kinds of names for each other ranging from all the simple ones like "babe" and "sweetie" all the way to some really silly ones I'd rather not name.

Our sex life is just fine, though. Better than ever actually!

You left out an option "We use them occasionally, and our sex life ROCKS!" I call him silly names, sometimes "sweetie" or "honey" sometimes really silly stuff like "Sugar Nuts" or "Honey Balls." He usually only uses affectionate pet names for me when he's being silly

(OK, do "bitch" or "slut" count as pet names? They do in our house, at certain times.) But, sometimes he uses the old "babe" as my name. He often refers to me as "the old lady" to his buddies. Nice.

Usually, we call each other by our names, with a few things thrown in (often the nasty ones during sex) for variety.

But, I usually hear "Yes, dear." when he's being a smart ass and I've asked him to do something he doesn't want to do, like....clean up something.

We have a variety of names for each other. We actually save the first names for when we're trying to be serious or get the other person's attention for something important.

We're pretty much the same way. I'll address him by his first name when I'm really trying to get his attention and keep it.

I don't understand how a pet name takes away from the mystery factor. You'd think it would be the other way around.

Agreed, I almost have to think a bit before saying my guy's first name. Normally we don't call each other anything, most common is "Daddy" from me. When we're talking sex, slut/little girl/etc. (I don't think you're talking about sex names, though.) Out of sex he says "sweetheart" and "pudding" if he calls me anything.

Same with me. He knows when I call him by his first name something demands immediate attention. Cute names are just not for sexual situations with us.
And yes, our sex life is great!

I call my wife Pebbles because she looks like a grown up version of the cartoon, and she calls me Bam Bam because since I was a kid I've always have been a destructive person. Even after college I decided to make a career out of breaking stuff and became a Artillery Officer in the Army.

Holy crap with all of our pet names it can be hard sometimes to tell if we actually HAVE given names! I call the guys names ranging from Honey, Love and Baby to Jackass, asshole and jerk.

Our sex life is amazing and scortching so ya we would break the curve I think.

Sigel has called me Pookie since we were in HS and Arch calls me Love mostly or Anielka a corruption of my given name and the word for angel in polish
