When did you start thinking about getting engaged?

Contributor: nova2014 nova2014
I don't really want to think about getting engaged yet but if it happens I wouldn't be opposed as long as our engagement is 2-4 years long. When did you start thinking of getting engaged? What about your SO? How long would you/was your engagement? Were you ready when your partner brought it up or vice versa? Would you want to move in together before getting married?

We have not really talked about it. We both want to finish school before we think about marriage.

It was almost a year that we had been together. We've been engaged for 3 years now. We're just waiting on things to fall into place financially.

My first time - three days after meeting, he proposed. Married within 18 months. Divorced ten years later after an awful marriage.

This time - almost six months dating (the right guy), talking about getting engaged right now, and then a year for the wedding.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with long engagements. I prefer them, to be honest. My first time was desperation, this time it's the fact that he and I aren't getting any younger for family-making.

We were together 2 months when we started talking about living together. We were spending all of our time together anyways, so why not? We've lived together for 6 months. He started talking about marriage after about 3 months together. I was totally down for it but then we had a huge bump in our road. We'll see what happens. He knows my dream proposal, and unfortunately this August is the only time to make that come true. After that it'll be at least 2 years. Sooo we'll see.

If he does propose some time this year, it'll probably be at least a year and a half to two years before we actually do so. I personally think it's a horrible idea to have a huge wedding and get into a lot of debt together right off the bat so I'd want to save as much as we could for it first.

I also definitely wouldn't marry someone I haven't lived with. Actually, I've lived with my last 5 partners. It really opens your eyes to who they really are. What their habits really are like. Yea, they helped around the house when we were just at my place but once we started living together they decided I was their waitress/maid/personal chef/mother/butler. Eff off!

We both know we want to be married, but we're still young and not in the financial situation to do it right now. He wants to save for a nice engagement ring for me. I'm not too concerned about when we'll be engaged, but it would be a definite yes.

We knew from day one (once we started dating). He persued me for a few months, but once I gave in....we didn't really discuss it, it was just something we knew we were going to do. Married 2 yrs in May!!

From the time we started dating, we moved in together after about a year and a half. We got engaged when we'd been together for about 8 and a half years, and got married on our 10th anniversary weekend.

We are a rarity... we got enaged at 17, we were engaged for just over a year and married at 18 and have been married over 10 years... I guess it all just depends on the couple

2-4 years is a really good amount of time, in my opinion. My partner was the one who brought it up. Well, we both did and we'd both talked about it, but I waited for him to say something about being serious about marriage. Just to be sure I guess. I think we starting discussing it about near the end of the first year we'd been together.

We were together 6.5 years, living together almost as long, before we got engaged. This summer will be 2 years engaged, and if we manage to pull the wedding off in September (it's been on hold due to some job and financial changes) then that's it, but if not we're holding off until next September so it will be a 3 year engagement.

We were young when we met (I was 18) I had schooling to finish, we had careers to build, etc. Where we live common-law is as legally good as married in almost all ways, so we wanted to wait until we had the income and disposable funds to really make it about "us" and not just do it to do it, you know?

We are thinking about it right now, depends on the person.
