I personally think it's bad for the animal(s) in question. Pets are like children and having wonky schedules can be confusing and create behaviors that are unwelcome in our human homes.

Working in veterinary medicine some of my patients have been shared between couples who are no longer together, it gets pretty confusing for medical care - who ok's what procedure, who pays, what if the other person doesn't want to do it all, having to update both people on hospitalized pets because they don't talk to each other, them visiting separate, then it gets even more confusing when new partners of the ex-spouses get involved too. I have had several clients who it was like custody in a child.
