Internet Dating: Yes, No, or Maybe?

Contributor: SydneyScreams SydneyScreams
I've had some successful experiences, which have been more memorable than any unsuccessful ones. I think the first person I met via online dating is now one of my best friends. Things between us didn't work out romantically, but he's an awesome guy friend and we can talk about anything/everything.

I suppose my experience has been more successful at meeting friends than it has been at meeting partners.

I've done it. Met someone and was with them for a year. He lived 12 hours from me so I didn't get to spend much time with him, but we loved when we were able to be together. Its hard to do and you have to have a lot of trust in your partner.

I've done it. It didn't work for me but I wouldn't recommend against it. I know people who have met people they liked.

I'm married, but I have had girlfriends who have done it and met men online. Some were keepers, some were not.

only local people, I actually met my man online and as it turns out his dad used to work for my family's business so our families were already well acquainted lol

I have never done it. I have never been one to look for someone to date. That being said, I think the internet dating makes a lot more sense than most of the traditional ways to meet people.

I find it sort of un-natural. I've tried it and it just feels awkward. But I have nothing against it.

Meeting people online definitely works. Most of my friends are people that I met on a BBS (Bulletin Board System - pre-World Wide Web). From our group of about 100 people, mostly high schoolers at the time, we have 10 couple who are still together 25 years laters.

Talking online at all hours gave everyone time to get to know people in a way that can be difficult face to face.

Being a plus size woman I was conditioned since childhood that *nobody* would ever be attracted to me. It was absolutely drilled into my head. Although I am more confident now, I've only started one relationship 100% in person. I just am so afraid of being made a fool out of for being plus size. So I have always found relationships online.

I've done it and I agree it is hit or miss. For me it seems hard to establish a connection with anyone that way. I do better at forming bonds when I am doing normal things with people in groups over a longer period of time. "Dates" are not usually good for me.
