The best way to bring your rating up is write high quality reviews. Being active on the site is also a good idea.

Is it less of a good idea to review more popular items (like will my review get lost in a sea of reviews/barely noticed?)

On the other side, on a less popular item will it even get noticed in the first place?

Or does it not matter at all, and is really just about cranking out the reviews?

I think reviewing popular items gets mine noticed, but that's just my experience.
