Need input on Editor Program FAQ

Kindred Kindred
I am working on developing a FAQ for the Proofreading Program to try and address common questions. I often see the same questions asked repeatedly and more so with each new rotation. This FAQ will hopefully act as a resource for people to refer to. I am listing the questions I will answer, just not the answers currently as EF will edit the content. What I need from you are any additional questions I missed. I have not been an editor for several months and so may be a bit out of the loop regarding some issues. Thank you in advance for your input.

What is the Proofreading program?

How do I participate in the Proofreading program?

What criteria are used to select editors? Why do editors only need a rank higher than 5.0 to qualify but their reviews do not auto-publish until 5.5?

I submitted my request to participate in the Proofreading program and it’s been more than 48 hours. Why haven’t I heard back yet?

What is the function of an editor?

My request was accepted! What do I do now?

There doesn’t seem to be any reviews in the Task Market. Am I doing something wrong?

I selected a review to edit but when I try to open it, I get directed back to my own list of reviews. What happened?

I selected a task and it is a blog review. Am I responsible for the content on the blog?

I selected a review but it is in preview mode and I cannot edit it. What’s wrong?

I just returned a review back to the reviewer. Now what?

I finished editing a review and it’s ready to publish. Now what?

I just edited a follow-up review but it shows someone else as the editor. What happened?

I published a review and noticed I made a mistake. Can I correct it?

I’m editing a review that appears to be plagiarized. What do I do?

How many reviews am I allowed to edit?

How many points do I get for editing?

I still have a question you didn’t answer. Who should I contact?

Include information about a situation where a review has a lot of spelling mistakes and the style is iffy, but it's not quite at the "send back to reviewer" or "send to administration" setting.

Tell how heavy a hand an editor should have, if they should just edit grammar or also style.

Explain if they will be contacted if there are multiple errors, or if the privilege of being an editor is just yanked away (I found one of those reviews that redirect a person to their own reviews and I was terrified I had the editorship removed).

Provide how time frame for how long a person has to edit a review (maybe not a rule, but guidelines at least).

If it's okay to take a review before bed and work on it in the morning or afternoon.

The same as above, but it's 2 AM when not much is happening anyway.

This isn't an F.A.Q. thing, but it would be great if there was a way that when reviews are available in the task market, there could be an alert, or it was announced on twitter, or something better than constantly refreshing that page.

Thank you for seeking input on how to improve the program and better inform us newbies and the potential newbies.

I will add your comments to my notes. Thanks.

Thanks, Kindred!! I made a post for advice and tips from past editors for us newbies but there are no threads on it. I was so scared when I kept going back to my thread on one of the reviews for proofreading that I thought I had messed up already. This is a very needed FAQ!!!

Bumping this so I can turn this in to EF later this week. Thanks for any input/suggestions.

Looks like a good list so far! Maybe you could include some links to editing resources or suggestions on where to find more info? I second the suggestion for info on how heavy-handed to be with the (theoretical) red pen, that's been the part I've been most unsure of so far. For instance, do I correct weird spacing of paragraphs?

And my editor brain really wants to change "There doesn’t seem to be any reviews in the Task Market." to "There don't seem to be..."

I plan to link to the webpage when appropriate (Program Instruction and Editing Guidelines). The question regarding how much is too much will in part be explained when I define the role of an editor. Anything beyond that would need to be expounded upon by EF, but I will add it to my list. Thanks!

I have edited a few reviews by now and so far I've never sent a review back to a student. I'm not a mentor - I'm an editor. All I do is correct punctuation and grammar and spelling and sometimes add in a word that is missing. I think the most I did was change "me and my fiancee" to "my fiancee and I" because I didn't want to change the writer's voice.

Am I wrong?

I do point all new members to the mentor list though to encourage them to get a mentor.

You would send a review back when you feel there are just too many mistakes to correct. For example, in the past I have sent reviews back because there was no capitalization and very little punctuation. The entire review looked like one run on sentence. I've also sent a review back wen they copy/pasted the exact same paragraph in more than one section on the extended template. It's really up to you how much you think is too much. If you're willing to make the changes, I think that would be fine.

Oh wow - thanks. I had a review like that where none of the first words in a sentence were capatalized. I went through and did that for them but noted in the note to them at the end that I did that.

I had a couple of reviews come up the other night where it was someone I had just given a not-so-great rating to and when I read the review, I couldn't find where it was copied but there was something about it. I unlocked it (because I couldn't find where it was plagarized even though it seemed familiar) and left it for someone else.

I felt like since I had given them a not-so-great vote, I wasn't comfortable editing their review either. Sounds crazy but I just felt uncomfortable doing it.

One last bump before I submit my FAQ to EF.

Erm, hope I'm not too late, but I didn't see this before.

I think good things to address are

1. the "glitch review" thing---"I selected a review and it's bouncing me to my own list of reviews"

2. "Do I still get my points if I submit to the administrator or return to student" (answer: no, but you can email Sammi the task number if it's plagiarism or unveiled point farming, and just release the task so you don't waste one of your daily allotment)

I submitted my document to Sammi, but I did address both of your concerns. Thanks!
