I actually noticed you commented on a few. Sorry to hear that you have had your reviews stolen. It's happened a few times to me too. It's really frustrating when that happens!!

This is getting ridiculous. More and more plagiarized reviews are posted. And OFTEN. It's one thing if an editor doesn't catch it, but what really makes me angry is that when it is reported the thief is given THREE CHANCES before they are banned. Copyright infringement is illegal and punishable by the court of law. Why is illegal activity given three chances on this site?? There are laws in place on this type of activity. People are kicked out of college for minor plagiarizing. People are fined huge amounts of money in court over this. I'm not sure I understand why everywhere else in the world takes this seriously and this site doesn't.

I'm with Aprika on this. I'm incredibly frustrated by the lack of seriousness that's given to theft. Those of us who write our own work spend a lot of time and effort to do so. It's like a slap in the face to good contributors to allow people to steal with only a warning.

100% Agreed!! I wanted to report the review that was copied from me to the proper authorities (as this was word for word right from my blog), but of course, I didn't screen shot it fast enough. Now, I don't have proof.

It's extremely frustrating to me that this is basically tolerated. Giving warnings about something that is a punishable act by law is ridiculous and as you say A HUGE SLAP IN THE FACE!

AGREED!!! I work really hard on my reviews as well and if someone copied it would piss me off as well. No Talent Hacks! Another problem is giving a "Not worth reading" on a good review.

I don't think this is a fair question. Unfortunately, I just had some reviews that I published as a mentor that were stolen -- and I had no idea. I don't read every review of a product, but I also assumed that stealing was much more rare than it apparently is. I guess I was naive, but most of us don't assume we need to patrol the site like that. =/

They have three chances??? I wasn't aware of this. I've reported a few reviews that were stolen, word for word, from my own reviews. It was awhile back but I contacted JR and the user was banned.

When was this new 3 chances rule implemented? Or was it always there? Either way, I agree with you that it's not fair.

I'm astonished at how much this goes on! After editing for awhile, you do (at least I did) get a sense for which are stolen. Only takes a minute to check. I usually will call up the reviewer and the product pages. If someone has done a bunch of reviews I'm usually confidant that they are legit. First review? You can be sure I will check.

When people take so much time to write a thorough review, it really gets to be upsetting. I spend many hours on my reviews between writing, measurements, taking photos, editing and resizing the photos, uploading to EF and then reading through to make sure that everything is just right..I can understand people being furious over the plagiarism.

We all need to keep an eye out for this. As the site grows larger everyday, we are going to see more and more of this.

I so agree with this. My Hitachi review had almost all Extremely useful votes and someone came in and chose one of the lowest ratings possible for it. smh...

Editors, here is a good link to help look for plagiarism quickly: The Plagiarism Checker. It has a paid version, but I have found that the free version works well enough for these purposes. You can copy/paste the whole review and check it all at once, which google can't do.

Editors, we have in the task market someone who has posted at least seven reviews in the last 30 minutes. Now I don't know about you, but I have never been quite that prolific! I have edited all I can for the day, so I am posting this in the hopes someone else will send these on to the administrator!

Wow! I'm doing a lot of reviews if I do 7 in a MONTH, let alone in 30 minutes! lol

Thank you for your diligence in this area, Ms. N. I feel a lot better knowing that you stay on top of this and encourage others to do the same.

I don't really believe this, but maybe they saved them & posted them all at once? Well, with a big red flag like that it should be easy enough to spot & check...but, you shouldn't have to! Hope they don't get savvy enough to avoid big red flags such as that.

There's got to be a way to automate the plagiarism scans, e.g.The Plagiarism Checker mentioned above, but in house. Then editors wouldn't have the added responsibility of policing this problem. Unfortunately, I'm no programer.

So glad I found this thread; it really needs to be stressed, especially to newbies, what a problem this is becoming because I had no idea. The more people on the look out, editors or not, the better.

Same here, and today it was really blatant. One person did 6 or 7 and all I had to do was scan the summaries of other reviews to see it was the same. Some people have no shame.

Bump.

I'm a novice editor and I was a victim of this today. Nothing in the review led me to think it was anything but a fairly good first review. Another contributor, Geogeo, spotted the plagiarism and reported it — but I wish I'd caught it myself.

In the future, I'm going to google several sections of each review I edit. I only wish I'd seen this thread sooner.

Especially with the new, higher points awarded to reviews. It may make people more likely to copy other's work. Google, or the Plagiarism Checker are your friends!

Don't feel bad, this is my first editing round and it happened to me, too. But I am more vigilant now! I have already turned in another and am currently holding one until Sammi looks at it. I'm going crazy seeing all the tasks in the market that I can't have because I'm stuck with this one. Garrr!

It would be lovely if a plagiarism check could eventually be built into the programming in between review submission and editor acceptance, but for now, I see it as a part of the job editors do to earn their points.

On the other hand, it seems to me that an editor should logically receive the same amount of points for catching plagiarism as they would for editing and approving a review...possibly even more. After all, they are helping to save EF the trouble of a possible lawsuit.

I'm pretty sure Sammi awards 250 points (the equivalent of editing a standard review) for catching plagiarized reviews, although this may be for already published reviews only.

This deserves another bump. I've found three reviews tonight alone that have been plagiarized and somehow made it through the editing process. It looks like this new increase points rewarded for reviews has lead to a lot of plagiarizing.

Please, please, please check each and every review you edit.

Worthy of another bump. It really only takes a couple of minutes, and it's part of what we get points for as Editors.

One thing I've found lately is that some folks are plagiarizing just a paragraph. It's buried right in the middle of the review, too. Very strange!

I transferred a plagiarized review to an admin this morning, commenting with the link to the stolen review. It seems to have "eaten" one of my three daily reviews. If that's the case, let me get this straight...
I make double-sure everything is original content, catch a plagiarist, report it, and am penalized by getting no points whatsoever and (more importantly) losing 1/3 of my daily reviews? Why?

PS: A good way to catch stolen content is grabbing some key sentences of the unedited review and pasting it into Google with quotes around it. The quotes will catch a verbatim result, if any.

You are not supposed to forward plagiarized reviews to admin anymore. Apparently there is a glitch in the system and Sammi can't access them. Instead, email Sammi and let her know the title, contributor, task number for the plagiarized review and a link for the review that was plagiarized.

edit: You are also manually awarded 250 points if you follow the above instructions.

Alright; will do. If there's a "glitch" that's preventing editors from editing and administrators from administrating, it might be wise for the devs on EF to disable or temporarily remove that button. That's bad news for all involved.
