If your published review has typos or bad grammar, do you want to be told about it in the comments area?

Contributor: Petite Valentine Petite Valentine
I've come across a review that has stellar content but so many typos and instances of bad grammar that I honestly don't know which way to vote. Based on the amount of information it's easily EU; based on grammar and punctuation... well, it should have been revised before publication.

If your published review has typos or bad grammar, should the reader tell you?

If it is an old review, they won't be able to edit it, so there is no point of contacting them. However, if it soon enough contact them privately. If the review is stellar than the grammar and typos weren't unreadable, so I would vote based on the stellar-ness of the review. I have typos that I miss and my readers miss. If they don't change the meaning of what you are saying or confuse the reader, I look past them. If there was an editor, they should have caught that, but sometimes it is hard to find all the errors. I would vote on the editor's job too.

I totally agree with Beck! I'd give the exact same advice, and that's how I would want to be treated.

I also agree with Beck. I would prefer a quiet little note rather than having it plastered all over my comments...especially since if it is a recent review I can correct it easily.

I also agree with Beck. I would love to know. I have had a review recently where a comment was left about comma errors and spelling errors. my mentor put it back through her word processor and no errors were found. i did not understand. my husband put it through his program. same thing no errors. he did find one comma error. he is great at comma usage. So what to do. is it me or is it the commentor. IDK. But I do feel that I as a reviewer should do a good job on the spelling and grammer, ect. and not depend on the editor.

I don't care if the comment is left or a message sent. Either will work for me.

When writing a review you are typing/thinking so fast that IT IS EASY to make mistakes.

Its the editors job to fix those misakes, thats his or her job, so in that case I don't think it is fair to GET A WORSE rating because of it.

Now, IF YOU POST A COMMENT about the mistake(mistakes), other people are more likely to give that person a worse rating as well, which doesn't seem right.

personally I would like to get a personal message about it, verses geting a worse rating or a comment

Personal message. Otherwise it might look like you are trying to pick on the person if they had a great review. Sometimes it does happen-you read something, know what the word id and your eyes see it as it should be, not the typo that is there.

Sure, I have terrible grammar, so I'd like to be told in a private message.

If the reviewer has an editor, and the review is stellar, I give the reviewer a mark, but I downgrade the editor.

I agree with making the review ranking public, but I'd like to see the editor's ranking private.

I personally don't care if it's written in my comments, but I wouldn't want others to rate badly because of it so PM may be the best bet.

Also, if there was an editor, I'd mark bad on the editors part.

I would rather get a private message telling me so. However, I do feel that it is the editor's job to catch most of that. That being said, we are all human and no matter who you feel is responsible for correcting the grammar and such, we all make mistakes. Though if there are a ton of mistakes, I feel it is rather obvious that somebody was just being lazy. There is no reason why you should not run your reviews through spell check.

Private, polite message would be best. I agree that the editor probably should have caught that. Sometimes my reviews have been published so quickly that I cannot believe someone actually looked at it for errors. However, some people also think there are errors when there are actually none; comma issues especially. Not everyone is an English major and it does not take much to run a review through spell check before publishing/editing a review.

I think I would prefer to have a private message sent. To have it posted on the comment section is very embarrasing. But I think for grammar problems it needs to be for sure otherwise don't send it.

I really want to be told if I let a grammar/spelling error slip through. I think you should let someone know, even if it is an old review. Otherwise, they may make the same mistake over and over.

Yes, this should be caught by an editor, but it isn't always going to be. Not to mention, this happens beyond the level where a person has an editor. A higher ranking doesn't make you a grammarian.

You know, I have noticed this too. I will go to grab a task that just popped up and it is already taken and when I go to the community page it is that review published already. I have also seen many obvious errors that appear the editor did not even read the review. I rate the editor's job for things like that because that is not what their job is. Their job is to edit not just publish.

I would actually send the person a private message. I have done that a couple of times. Also if I notice the editor did not do a good job I will vote them for that.

Speaking of bad editing, one time I had someone put apostrophes into my review where they didn't belong, so I had to go back and remove them. ¬¬

I'm throwing my hat into the "the editor should have done something" ring on this. I'm still new to reviewing, so I don't yet know all the details about the reviewer/editor relationship. But, is it possible for an editor to work with a reviewer to make sure that the message comes across clearly? Can they go back and forth on a review a couple of times until the spelling and grammar are better?

One point I would like to put out there.

In my case... I have a big issue with how to word things eroticly, and the terms that are used example anal rim.. that sounds so medical and not sexy at all.

so for me when i wright my review. I put in all sorts of ????? and _____ and options between two ways. This is hard on the editor/mentor. She works really hard to try and help me. As have ALL my mentors. YOU TWO KNOW I'm not easy to proff read. And just to add, I'm not ignorant or anything. I took sevral honors english classes in collage. ( but still can't spell)

So it is not always the editors fault. It is not always mine. there are times i have seen in my last review where the word processor spits out a bad sugested change. I found three. I even put my review though word and I still have some errors.

I just wanted to put that out there. We are all human, mistakes need to be adressed. But plz don't post them on my review. Since I had a bad comment on one review no one has rated it or left a comment. one lady sent me a pm and asked is it ok to rate you if someone says you messed all up? I was like yes. plz do rate it. She said the only rating she would consider was the next to worst one due to the mistakes someone eles found. I went back and fixed all the mistakes that we could find two days before she messaged me.
So what to do with me. I"m horible at spelling and commas I swear I am. look at this message and you will get just a taste of how bad I am.. LOL

Well, word processors do not look at commas and grammar, just spelling. Don't rely on them too much.

Leave me a comment or a message. I prefer a comment on the review because, well, it's a COMMENT about the review. I like to reserve my inbox for other things. I don't see how posting a comment would affect others' ratings -- the vote box is above the comments! I never look at the comments before I vote.

Also, not everyone has their reviews edited, guys.

No. This isn't how it works. Only lower ranked reviewers are edited at all, and the editors and reviewers don't communicate.

Usually the editor grabs a review off of a Task List. There isn't time for the editor to go back and forth with the reviewer, because then that editor can't do anything else until the review is fixed and often people never fix the problems and never contact you, and as an editor, you are then in limbo. What the editor does if the review is unreadable is send it to an Administrator and it's dealt with there. The editor then can go on to other reviews, but he or she does NOT get credit for editing that review.

It is a Mentor's job to go back and forth and discuss the review at length with the reviewer. This is the best way to do it, if you want lots of input, and also learn to write really fantastic reviews. The Mentors get the credit when you graduate the program, it is different than being an editor.
