What have you learned in doing video reviews?

Contributor: Cookie Monster Mike Cookie Monster Mike
Pretty simple question, but this can be directed in different ways. I'm more so meaning this discussion to be helpful as tips for doing a video review, but also to comment on what you have learned in doing a video review. This is an open ended question so feel free to share what comes to mind.

As of this post I have done 4 video reviews. One of the few main things I have learned is to either write down, or play it over in my head the main things I want to cover and in what order.

Secondly, i recommend this to other people to save on editing and starting over, is noise. Make sure you have your cell phone turned off. Mine rang during a recording and threw me off completely. Had to start over, editing just didn't want to work. If you have a sensitive microphone, I'd turn off ceiling fans or regular fans near by. Also try not sitting next to a noisy computer. Those have been so far the most helpful things I have learned.

Most important lessons:

-Longer is not better.

-Shorter is not better.

-Don't wing it.

-Mute can be your friend (like your computer's sounds, if you're using a stationary computer camera)

-Video is used to show things that can't be properly explained in text, focus on the important parts that don't translate to text, first.

These are all good suggestions. Making an outline can be very very helpful.

I'm bad and usually wing it, but I can usually get on a roll talking about the few things I can't show through text and I try not to talk about much more than that. The main point of the videos is to show what doesn't translate well into text so I try to focus on that.

Very good point. I wanted to do a few more video reviews on a couple of products but I feel all I can show and talk about is the same thing in the written review. The only difference is people would see it in action (not an adult video), but in terms of movement, flexibility etc. We will see.

But I remember I had a video review near perfect and them my cell phone started ringing and just messed everything up

THIS!

Also, read the guidelines before starting one and make sure you watch the video before you upload it.

I pretty much agree with it all.

I've also learned that I'm surprising good at winging it when it comes to discussing things.

Make sure you upload the right file.

Other than that, one of my toys was seriously out to sabotage me. The only 4 times it's never turned on for me were when I was doing a video review. Make sure your toys are spiteful when doing video reviews.
