What influences how you rate reviews?

I like a lot of detail in reviews, particularly about how that individual person felt about it (versus technical information, like measurements), since that's not something you can read from a list of specifications or easily find elsewhere. I really appreciate it when the person notes their own personal preferences, since that allows me to gauge how similar to me their tastes are--for example, if someone says "I don't like very powerful toys, so this was right up my alley!", I know that it's probably not something I'm going to be interested in, even if the average rating is 5 stars. People have different tastes, & a product that rates 5 stars with one reviewer may be hated by another simply because one prefers more thickness, or stronger vibrations, or has a different anatomy.

As a side note, thanks to everyone who posted in this thread--I found it really helpful for improving my own reviews!

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot to mention: I love when reviews include photos of the item with other objects, like a tube of Chapstick or a stapler. I'm really bad at envisioning things just from reading the measurements (even the life-sized photo throws me off sometimes, though it is very helpful!). It really helps me get a good idea of the size in my mind.

Little bit of all of the above! I want details and if the reviewer used the product and what they thought of it...

I agree with this comment and many of the others in this thread!

I prefer a tightly written review, but I don't downgrade if it's not. I also want to know they took the time to proof read & correct mistakes; if they can't be bothered with that, then I think they can't be bothered with other things, such as accuracy.

I like pictures, though they are not necessary. And well done videos are great, but I don't rate the review based on the video. I really just want to hear about your individual experience with it & any details that you can give. While I enjoy humor, it's just an added bonus on good reviews & it's not going to save bad ones.

I agree with you, I do just about the same when rating reviews and I always try to be fair.

Giving details I need to make a decision. Lots of incidental info is not necessary. Photos are great especially for clothing.

Details that really give me a sense of what the toy is like before I buy. That's really important -- videos and pictures are essential, but you could just do an awesome descriptive job, too.

I definitely love detailed reviews.. pictures are always an added bonus. When dealing with toys, i like seeing pics of one toy next to other toys for size comparison.
