Helping students with articles for the Sexis magazine.....(serious feedback appreciated!!)

Contributor: js250 js250
I have two very talented students that asked if I could help them write an article for the Sexis magazine, along with the basic mentoring of course. I told them I would and I have figured out a method to assisting them with their articles.

--Are any of the other mentors also helping the new students and members with the article writing process and articles?

--When I get my method down to a science, is there anyone who would like me to add it to the forum for their possible use or as a guide?

--Should Sexis possibly have their own mentors for assisting new writers with their first article or two?

I haven't had anyone request this, but I'd me more than willing to help a student with an article if they asked.

I think a program in place for mentoring on articles would be great!

I figure for now the best method would be to email a rough draft, but if you get something better worked out, please post it!

Hey there! First let me compliment you on your willingness to help your students with something not review related. Victoria would be so pleased as this is exactly what she envisioned for the mentor program.

The way that the SexIs editing team works is fully explained in the SexIs forum in the post My SexIs Articles Are Being Returned As Unacceptable.
We actually DO have a program in place to help community members who wish to write for SexIs but don't feel they have the skills necessary. It's called Eden Lit!
Check out the #Eden Lit Lessons on the Eden Lit Forum for some fun, short and informative lessons in grammar and a whole bunch of other topics.

If the SexIs editing team comes across an article that is good but just needs some work they contact me, personally, in an email (airenwolf at yahoo.com) to ask if I can help the author. Since some of my former "students" have gone on to win prizes and extra points for their articles I can vouch for the system working.
If you feel you may need some help, support or just someone to look over your work give me a yell and I can set you up with a buddy or help you myself.

I'm not a mentor, but hope to be once I meet the qualifications. But I do write for SexIs and I think helping through the mentoring program is a great idea. If people have never writen articles before, sometimes they struggle with what SexIs is and how to get their thoughts down in the correct way for a magazine.

I also think using Eden Lit is a great idea, but I don't know how many people relate the two. I spend quite a bit of time here at EF, browsing the forums and such, and have only just come across something bringing the two together. Perhaps it could be suggested under the "Publish SexIs Article" on the dashboard. Just my .02. xoxo

I am not talking about the actual writing skills, vocabulary, grammar, etc. I do think it is good of your club to provide lessons that will improve and add to the usage of correct grammar, spelling and vocabulary skills of other writers.

Specifically, I am referring to our newer members who have absolutely no idea how the submission process works, where to find & how to use the submission wizard, where to find the Guidelines and Rules, location of the monthly topics, how to contact Rayne with questions, picture details, what is and is not allowed in articles and the other very important details you need to know PRIOR to even thinking of writing an article.

Congrats on teaching and helping your students to become prize winners!! That is a great reflection of your teaching.

I remember winning the Community Vote on the first contest and that was an amazing honor!! That and my articles are the primary reasons I have been asked to help them get started.

Thank you so much for the compliment! It is appreciated and I have always enjoyed helping other members with anything they need or questions they may have about the site. I usually do it off site, but when it is a current student I am helping, it becomes part of my mentoring classes along with learning the programs and other aspects of the site. It is good to know they have you for a mentor and that suggesting a mentor program would be overkill. Thanks also for the info--the post will also help spread the word!!

I am not a mentor but I would be more than willing to help anyone. I think having feedback on articles would be beneficial, even to seasoned writers.

Thank you so much, Stormy!! I do have a few ideas and suggestions for a mentor/partner program for the articles. I will get in touch with her over the weekend and see what she says next week. I just had a small rush of people asking me for help so I came up with this discussion....
