New Students per Month Limits?

Contributor: Antipova Antipova
Hey there---

So I've really been loving mentoring, I get to meet lots of awesome fledgling reviewers, and advanced reviewers who want to go the extra mile, and I get to help them gain more confidence in their reviews by giving writing suggestions. It's pretty great all the way around---and I keep getting new student requests, so it must be good for them too!

So, the first three or four months of being a mentor I only got two students. But over the last couple months (Nov, Dec, and Jan) I've had lots---enough in December that one day I went to my mentor program dashboard and saw a little "New Students Will Be Accepted 12/29/11" message. I had accepted 5 students in December, so I figured that was my max.

Now, for January, I went in figuring I had 5 slots available, and I figured I would take three basic-level contributors and two advanced-level over the course of the month (if I got the opportunities to mentor interested people). So I went ahead and merrily accepted three new students... and now I go back to my Mentor Dashboard, and already I see a "New Students Will Be Accepted on 01/10/12" message.

How'd I mess this up?

It's more of an "in the last 30 days" thing than a "per month" thing. So if you take on 5 students between the 2nd and the 15th, on the 2nd of the next month you should be able to take on another student, but if your next student was accepted on the 5th of the previous month, you have to wait until the 5th to sort of roll that over. I hope that made sense. After rereading it I can see it being a bit confusing.

!!

In the first place, that makes sense.

In the second place 1/10 is *tomorrow*, not *next month*. I thought today was already the 10th, so that kind of over-ruled seeing the "1/"

Not so big a problem at all!

I don't know!! This happens to me every time I accept a new student. It only allows one student at a time and sometimes my wait period is for two weeks. Anyone??? I also have no idea of when I can accept new students prior to choosing one so there have been many of them I should have chosen first before I realized what was going on, now I have newbies waiting for my next availability.

I am glad you figured it out.

I was just thinking the other day it would be nice if the upped the number you can accept. I have been unavailable almost since I started. I was available today, but I got a request from someone who had been waiting for me. This has happened to me many times actually.

The rationale for the limit is to give other mentors a chance to get students. Previously, the mentors with the most students were attracting the most students, because they had the most students. I'd say the cap is even more important given how many mentors there are now.

Yep, having the cap does make sense. I remember wishing and waiting for my first student for such a long time...

I'm just a little more at-ease since Sam explained how it actually works, instead of it seeming like a mystery.
