Requesting multiple mentors and cancelling immediately?

Contributor: K101 K101
Well, I noticed someone had requested me as a mentor and cancelled instantly. I sent a message asking if something was wrong. No reply. I've seen where the same exact person has done the same thing to at least 2 other people! Now I'm starting to think this is a way just to get points? Am I right?

Have any of you been requested lately and cancelled on instantly?

I've had that happen before. It also happens if they submit requests to multiple mentors. As soon as one mentor accepts them, the system automatically cancels all remaining pending requests. You can check their profile to see if they have a mentor currently or not. If they don't and it appears they are doing it for the points, I would notify Kristi.

If you're going to try to abuse the system for points, why do something so obvious? If they want the points to buy toys why not actually go through the mentor program/become an active reviewer and contribute something in exchange for perks?

yes. A few times actually. I was on-line when I received the request, and it was immediately cancelled by the contributor.. like, a couple seconds after I received the request.

Yea! For real! Lol. It's kind of a nasty thing to do, but I wasn't sure if I was just over reacting being that I'm only a new mentor and was excited to see a request. Lol. It is kind of a bother and a waste of other's time.

Yes, I did see on their profile that they do not have a mentor. I also saw more comments from other mentors asking "why did you cancel? Are you still interested?" At least don't leave someone hanging like that. I'd have more respect for someone who stepped up and said "look, I'm only doing this for point farming.."

Just like Sexiskewt said, why not actually contribute something?

Points are wonderful and why not do some things to gain them, but when you take advantage and screw with people, it's not very nice!

Thanks guys for the advice.

Sktb0007 - wow! So it isn't just me? I bet you anything it was the same person who did it to me! I was on my E-mail and saw a new notification popped up and went directly to it and sure enough, seconds later she cancelled!

Now, to end this on a positive note:

Sorry! Couldn't resist! This is our moma raccoon! The fam visits our porch every night! Lol

I've had something similar just recently. They requested me sometime in during the US day hours and being in a completely different time zone, I didn't know about it til my next morning when I found the contributor had cancelled it.
They sent the request again the day and cancelled it once again. I was going to send a support ticket in if they did it a 3rd time.

That happened to me twice. I have had it happen legitimately, but it says canceled by administrator or system, not contributor.

I didn't even realize that you were rewarded points for requesting a mentor. At any rate, that is not cool. I'm sorry Kendra! If I hadn't already had 2 mentors I would love for you to be my mentor! I am sure you are fantastic!

I would definitely send in a support ticket about it. It sounds like they're point-farming to me. That's just so stupid. Why would you do something so obvious? And cruel, in my opinion. I'm not a mentor but I know you guys love what you do and to have someone feign interest and then take it back is mean.

Really? See, mine say "cancelled by contributor." I don't know much about it yet, but why do admins or the system cancel them? Just curious.

-Aw Holly that was super kind of you! I hope to be a really good mentor to someone someday.

-Nazaress: For real! It is pretty rude because it's so exciting to see you've been requested or at least for me it is. I've not done it yet so I almost jumped out of my skin over being requested! Lol. It is really obvious when someone does point farm like that. How desperate! I guess you have to really have no shame to take things that far. I totally understand earning your points and commenting on products and stuff, sure. But to go this far? My goodness. It seems a little greedy to me. Lol.

I put in a mentor request once, some months ago, and never heard back. I guess the contributor went inactive. Eventually, the system cancelled it.

I think it's a little weird that you can get points 6 times a day for requesting a mentor. What's up with that? I can't see any reason why someone would need to send 6 mentor requests!

Kendra, have you tried approaching new reviewers and offering to mentor them? That's how Lexical became my mentor, when I was new. I think you'll be a great mentor - you give such good advice in the review comments.

Oh I see. Wow, 6 requests?! That is pretty jacked up. Lol. What on earth would someone do with so many mentors? I can understand maybe requesting one and changing your mind if you find someone else who fits your needs better. I wouldn't be upset if someone cancelled on me for that, as long as they aren't doing it carelessly or for points and as long as they really did find someone who could be of more help.

I haven't really asked to mentor anyone, but when I see new people who have one or 2 reviews and it appears they may could use some help, I'll mention the program. Usually I just comment on the review and let them know the mentor program's available and give a brief description. It does sound like a good idea though to approach them, but I guess I'm always afraid to! Lol. Thanks for saying you think I'd make a great mentor! And I'm so glad you think my advice is good That makes me super happy! I have wondered whether or not it was helpful to anyone. Sometimes I'm afraid it'll come off rude.

I do hope I'd be a good one. I waited a while to apply to be one because I wanted to be sure I could offer enough knowledge and let's face it, I ain't the brightest crayon! Lol. I think I know enough to help someone out a little though.

Now, I do have someone who has asked me to mentor them last night, but they already have one other mentor and they told me she wouldn't respond at all. They said she hasn't answered their questions either. I'm just waiting though because I really don't want to take another good mentor's spot, but since you can have 2 mentors I thought that would be good in this situation. That way when the person's mentor isn't available, I could be there to fill in. I've spent quite a bit of time trying to help the person out though and it seems to be going really well. The only thing is, they say when they go to request me, it doesn't give them the option? I don't know if it's because they already have one or what.

the system cancels the request if they have submitted multiple mentor requests and one accepts. then the other open requests are automatically canceled by the system.

THIS. I've had it happen where someone else gets to them first, but they then have them as a mentor. No one has done it to me just for points that I know of, but you do get points for it.

For a newcomer, having someone actually send a message and say "Hi, I saw your review, here's some information about the mentor program, and if you'd like me to mentor you, I'd love to help out" is very helpful. This community is very intimidating to a newcomer because of it's size and complexity, so having someone jump in and offer help can be reassuring.

After all, the worst they can do is say 'No, I'm not interested in a mentor' or 'No, I'll find someone else.'

The person who wants to request you will have to complete or cancel their first class before they can ask for a new mentor.

Hey, that is a great way to do it! It doesn't sound rude or anything. Guess what? I have me a student! 2 to be exact! Yipeee! I'm so excited. They're both already advanced reviewers, but said they could still use help. One of them is advanced, but has only been here 3 or 4 days so I'm sure I could provide some kind of useful info. Lol.

I agree! It's not like writing reviews is even that hard. It doesn't take much to actually earn your points.

If someone requests multiple mentors, once one mentor is accepted, the system automatically cancels the other. Maybe this is why?

When I was looking for my first mentors, I sent out requests to several and then when one accepted the system automatically cancels the others. It's not the same as going in there and canceling immediately.
