Are There Things That Should Never Go In A Review?

Thanks! I'm still very new to reviews so I guess I have to remind myself we're writing reviews to provide information; it's not like we're selling the toy we're reviewing, so there's no conflict in mentioning others if it adds to the helpfulness of the review. That makes sense about minimizing mentions of toys not sold at EF, though.

That sounds absolutely horrifying and I honestly don't know what I would do if I did come across a review like either one of those. I mean, you're reviewing a sex toy, you can't say masturbation will send you to hell. And if you don't want people thinking you used a toy, have someone else review it or don't review at all.

That makes my blood boil too.

LiftedUp and Kynky Kytty, I agree with both of you about the raunchy and graphic stuff. I actually submitted a ticket a little bit ago about this and some other ideas I had for Eden that would make it more friendly to people like myself. I don't expect Eden to censor this sort of stuff, but it would be great if they had some way of letting the user know what's on a page or review or giving them the option of a personal setting in their account to allow or deny certain things. Below is the ticket I submitted in case anybody's interested:

Hi, let me first say I love your site. You have the most reviews of any site I know and very far prices and are a fairly clean site. I am a Christian and as part of that, I do not wish to see pornography. I realize with this being an adult toy site that some of that is unavoidable, but I was wondering if there are any abilities you could give users to limit their exposure.

For example, the main thing that sticks out to me is that the search pulls results not only for the toys but also for movies. It would be a great feature if the user could specify whether or not they wish to search specific sections.

Another thing that would be great is if a review contains nudity pictures if there could be some sort of notification so that those that don't wish to view these material would know.

Finally, some of the users avatars are pretty graphic and it would be great if this could be given a rating and if it's too high it could be replaced with a placeholder.

I realize this is a lot of work as I do a lot of PHP/MySQL work but I believe it would make your site more inviting to people like myself. I realize you want users to be open and be able to share much like a social network and I understand that. I am merely trying to make suggestions that may expand your user base to some that are put off by things on the site right now. Thanks for taking the time to read this. I would love to know your thoughts.

I once read a review where the reviewer started out by mentioning she was currently, at that very moment, using the toy. TMI...oops, what is that called? chatspeak? hehe

I wrote this in my first review and now regret it, "for beginners and advanced." That means nothing. When I see this in other people's reviews now I wish they had written what is good for the beginner and how does this still appeal to a more advanced user.

I agree, just saying that it's good for people with different experience levels doesn't add much. Explaining why a toy could be enjoyed by many people with various levels of experience can be very helpful. Then people who read the review have a better idea about a toy and don't have to wonder if they have enough experience to enjoy a toy.

I have a bit of a pet peeve about that whole 'beginner/advanced' thing. Yeah, in one of my reviews I indicate that the toy would be a great first toy... that's because I genuinely believe that would be a great first toy for someone who'd never owned a vibrator before.

But honestly, it's up to the person in question to decide for themselves whether or not they think it would be a great first toy for THEM! Just because someone's never played with a toy doesn't mean they've never masturbated with their fingers or other objects, or had sex with partners of various sizes, etc... someone may have never used a vibrator before and still have a clit of steel...

So I hate when a review declares 'this is an advanced toy!' or something like that. Seriously. My first dildo was a 1.5 inch diameter lathe turned wood dildo. Definitely not a 'beginner' toy... because it was unforgiving and hard and too thick, apparently. I only found that out after I'd made excellent use of it and loved it.

So that said, I think it's better to indicate the facts: "this toy is quite thick and because of the material will seem larger", "this isn't a very strong vibrator"... etc... instead of just declaring "this is a beginner vibe!"

Also I hate TMI reviews that are more like reading erotica.

Oh yes, and chat speak, but I think the editor program has mostly cleared that up.

Maybe this thread should be required reading for new reviewers like me. There's some great advice in here for people who truly want their reviews to be helpful for others!

First off I'm new to this whole arena of toys/reviews, secondly I'm not a reviewer. So having said that I would like to add that I LOVE the reviews!!! The community is what keeps me an EF fan! But as a newbie and very skeptical on many levels right now, I have appreciated the reviews that werent spellchecked thoroughly or proofread. I am suspicious of whether a company's reviews are authentic if they are all perfect. When I read these I know I'm getting real peoples opinions about real experiences and I value THAT more than I expect perfection. I do appreciate when there are very professional reviews and that the staff monitor... But I appreciate the realness of the reviews. True I dont want ALL the details, I don't want anyone to feel bad about their body because of a review, I don't like the bragging type statements... But I live in a real world with real people and I want real reviews. IF they were all correct I would think it was a scam because I work with real people and that's not the real world.
My two cents worth, too! Have a great day and enjoy yourself!

I can tell you firsthand that the only thing that ever gets changed in reviews are things like typos and grammatical errors. Eden also wants the honest reviews, they just want them to be easily readable, and there were some that would come through that weren't very easy to read. So no worries, they're all real reviews

*sarcasm* of course...

But EVERYTHING is good with anal! Who cares if it slips in? It will give you something fun to talk about in the ER waiting room!

"Me? What am I here for? Well, did you see The Nutty Professor with Eddie Murphy, where the dog 'swallows' the thermometer?"

And to echo everyone else, please write like you're putting this in a newspaper or magazine. This is no place for LULZ or bad spelling/grammar.

Now I agree with trying to be as accurate as possibly, but I wouldn't just complain about simple mistakes. I think most of them are honest, simple mistakes and I understand that people are busy. As long as I'm smart enough to be able to read it, I'll read it. I don't think it'd be fair to just not read reviews because people made a mistake. I've seen some that are complete slang and un readable, but it just seems rude and I don't think I'm too good to read someone's less than perfect review. I mean, seriously when someone accidentally puts to instead of too, it doesn't make it un-readable. Not everyone has time for Word. I use it for writing short stories and sending them off to my instructor, but I don't think people should be under pressure over simple mistakes. If they've done their best then that's all anyone can ask and anybody who does their very best will get a good rating from me.

I agree on the nudity! This is what would cause me to not read and about the only thing that would.
I find it highly distasteful and when it's forced on me, I'm going to leave immediately. I understand showing photos of yourself in some of the lingerie (without being too revealing) but I find those helpful most of the time.

I'm sure not every person is perfect with grammar and spelling and how can we just treat them as less than, not good enough because of simple mistakes?

I agree with a lot of people here that it's really annoying when people get very personal or wrapped up in the story. I also don't appreciate when people go overboard with 'wet' 'hard' 'throbbing' or any other personal terms. It just seems a bit tacky, but not a huge deal.

I don't need graphic details of anything. I can't even overhear other people having sex without feeling like I'm somehow listening in on some top secret meeting. Sex (even with toys) is private and I would prefer it stay that way. Tell me how you used it and why it felt good. I don't nee to know how wet/hard you were or how hard you came, icky.

And this may be more of a question than a complaint, but sometimes I wonder if some reviews that were apparently edited were actually edited. I have come across some edited reviews that mention microwaving toys, use for anal when it might not be that safest option or use of acronyms that beginners might not know about and they have not included the typical Eden disclaimer or editor's note. I'm just curious, I'm relatively new to the site, but that seems like something editors should/could catch for a more effective review?

If you think an editor has missed something, you should definitely let Sammi know. Email her (sammi@ edenfantasys.com) with a link and an explanation and she'll look into it.

Things I hate to see in reviews are sales pitches. If you loved the toy? That's great. If you think the toy will be a good choice for a certain segment of buyers? Go ahead and recommend it. But "Buy this now, you won't be disappointed!" always makes me facepalm.

Agreed! I see that most in new reviewers who aren't really comfortable with their own voice/writing style yet. If your review is well written, it's going to make people want to buy the item on its own (if it is a positive review, obviously). It doesn't need to sound all infomercial-y.

There are so many good ideas in this thread!

I also agree that I wish off-site reviews with a lot of nudity came with a warning. I have no problem with nudity, especially if it better explains a product (like a cupless bra, for example) but I'd appreciate the heads-up!

The biggest "never in a review" thing for me would be anything derogatory towards others. "Anyone who likes this toy is an idiot."

I'm really turned off by the whole "my Master" thing. I understand in the bondage group, but I hate to read it on every review from a person. To each her own, but it just kills it for me.
