If it's someones first review and they did a really crap job, I won't vote because they're still learning. I don't want to lie and tell them that it's useful when it wasn't, but I also don't want to discourage them! If it's someone's 20th review and they did a really crap job, I'll vote away!
This! Unless even the first review is a 1 paragraph rush job and it looks like something you'd see on Adam and Eve. Even then, I give people a free pass the first time, anyway, and leave some info about Extended Reviews, the Mentor Program and ask questions to get their creative juices flowing.
Without at least some constructive criticism how will people learn what is expected in a review?
I won't lie on a vote, though. This isn't Middle School. It has
nothing to do with being mean, only helpful. But, if I leave anything less than "useful" (and even then often) I will leave some info on why I voted why I did in the form of questions or suggestions. People do need to sometimes learn by doing, and if all they get is "Great review!
" they aren't going to learn how to be a critical judge of their own work and it doesn't do them a service. And that doesn't do Eden a service either.
