Follow Up Reviews

One of my favorite things to see in a review is a follow up review. ESPECIALLY one made 6 months or later from the original review. Not sure what sort of ranking clout posting followups holds (I saw 4% somewhere, but not sure where), but I think it would be awesome if there was more incentive to post thoughtful followups, cause I would like to see more "how it fared over time" discussions.

Me too!

I think follow up reviews are really important because someone may just LOVE an item that breaks after a month, or has other problems.

Also, it seems that some reviews are written after only a couple of uses of an item and the follow up provides an opportunity for greater insight into the product.

On my to-do list. I have been meaning to do it on 2 of my reviews & time & energy escapes me. I'm aiming to have them done by this weekend.

What are good incentives to get more contributors to write Follow Up reviews? What are we missing? Is it just a matter of ranking percentage or is about the attention (or lack of) drawn to the Follow Up reviews?

If you give me some feedback and suggestions, I will share it with my boss tomorrow afternoon during our meeting (there's some incentive!)

That's hard to say. I think a lot of times after writing a review, you don't really think about doing a follow-up.
I try to wait a reasonable amount of time before doing mine, but sometimes you kind of forget until you're looking back through your assignments.

Maybe an email like the alerts after a month or two to suggest a writing?

Good idea!

I thought about an email reminder too. I really could benefit from a reminder - lol. My other suggestion would be to just ask the community to ask the reviewer themselves for a follow -up as they read through the reviews (if a substantial amount of time has passed) & they are interested in the product. What better motivator, than a personal request? Just my 2 cents.

I'm actually really good about follow-ups, but I've found that *most* of what I review doesn't meet the criteria for a good follow-up, and I think that my follow-ups in general suck. (Some notable exceptions.)

I review books often that I don't go back to.
Once or twice - music. There wasn't a huge actual follow up there either.
I review cock rings that my husband just doesn't seem inclined to pick up naturally.
Sex toys- well a lot just never get used again either.

I did love the follow up review that I did for the collar. I used it in two completely different scenarios.

The last time that I checked though, we STILL can not edit follow-up reviews. I think that both forces people to wait on when they write a follow-up and then limits it after it has been written. I know a couple of things that I would have gone back to if the option had existed.

Yes, i agree. I would like to be able to follow up a follow up..or be able to add another follow up later on.

I don't know if people necessarily need prompting to write follow ups. It's just that most people probably want to use a toy for a long while--6 months +, like you said--before they write a follow-up. I follow-up after a long period of time or if something important happened.

I don't really write follow up reviews unless there's something really significant I forgot. I think it's because I don't consistently use toys and such. When I get something new, the older ones tend to be forgotten for the most part. Haha.

Hmm. Well, I think if there was more rank weighting for followups, that might be more incentive. However, I would hate to see that start to diminish the weighting gained from writing quality reviews in the first place. Especially since some follow ups are, frankly, a little pointless, especially if they come a day or two after the review came out, or only consist of a single sentence. If you want it to be more official, you'd have to set some sort of minimum word count standard...and I like the idea of being able to edit them, or to do multiple followups. I see I have opened a potentially big can of worms here.

Likewise, it would be cool to have our attention drawn to new followups, but again, I would hate to see that happening at the expense of giving new reviews exposure. I miss a number of reviews as is!

I disagree with respect to the fact that unloved/forgotten toys need not be followed up upon. I think drawing attention to the fact that it's not really a lasting favorite is important feedback. Likewise, I can imagine followup info I would want on books, and also possibly music. I guess it really depends how the review is written in the first place as well.

Anyways, that said, here is a distillation of my suggestions:

- a reminder email after a few months would be great
- If the contributor ranking weighting is really only 4%, I think that should be a bit higher. DOn't ask me how high, however, that just seems small.
- However, with higher weighting should come a word minimum.
- perhaps a small stream of follow up reviews underneath the list of regular reviews on the review page, just for those who are interested.

I don't know how plausible any of that is, and I don't want to make someone work their tail off on this - it's not bad the way it is, I just (selfishly) want to see more followups!

I don't know everything our customers are looking for when they read our reviews, but I think it'd be good to know that a toy/lube/game/book/etc . is usable for a decent time period (specific to the material/purpose). I understand that some things might not be enjoyable, which is why we give one-star reviews sometimes, right? But maybe we could try out a bad item again, just to see if it was a bad day back then when we first used it. It wouldn't take long, and I think it would mean a lot to a customer to see that a reviewer took extra time to verify their stance on an item, good or bad, and write about any changes they noticed.

For "good" items, even ones that run out (lube/edible) or wear out (lower quality materials / clothing), are you still using the same sort of product? Did you get another one of the same item? Did you choose a different item for the same purpose? That type of information could be very useful to a customer who might not be aware of better options.

Could the follow-up section be a place for further recommendations? For instance, if you liked some rubbery toy, but it wore out after a while and now there's another one you tried and liked, made by the same company -- the customer could benefit from that information.

I like the email reminder idea, but I think the best motivation for me would be either some nominal store credit (five dollars? is that a lot?) or a discount coupon code (maybe 15% off one item or something, nothing too huge). That would motivate me. Just sayin'.

Currently, I feel like if I write a follow-up it's just going to be lost in the abyss. Nobody will know I wrote it unless they happen to be reading old reviews of a particular product. So the main thing I would want is some sort of stream of information somewhere, where people could see the latest follow-up reviews.

I think it'd be neat if reviews that have recently had follow-ups written had their own column/sidebar on EF's reviews main page. There's a big list of recently written reviews, but no recently followed-up reviews (that I can tell). It'd be nice for followed up reviews to have an automatic "bump" when the follow up is published so that people who have read the review before and forgot about it can see it again and say "oh yeah, I wondered how that toy/corset/alligator held up after a month or two!"

I don't know if part of this is in response to my comments but even toys I love frequently become lost in the abyss of new toys. It's not not necessarily a need but it's just that... life doesn't take me in that direction. LOL

Plus, I almost never give shitty toys another chance.

However, I like the reminder idea. An opt-in reminder perhaps 3-4 months after the original review might be worth looking into.

I agree with Miss Cinnamon, The follow up reviews go mostly unknown about. I have written some, but on my vibes I am waiting to see if they hold up for at least 6 months before I write a follow up.

Not just to your comment, and also based on my assumptions about what's been said I hear you on losing sight of less than perfect toys - sometimes I get suprised at what I find in the back corner of a toy drawer.

Hearing that a toy sits, forgotten, is something I do want to read, however!

Yay for having more attention placed on followups. And while I do like the idea of having a separate stream, I LOVE Miss Cinnamon's idea of simply bumping the old review into the cue!

I think these are all really great suggestions and I'd love more emphasis put on follow-up reviews as well. Oddly enough, I came to this section of the forum to suggest that, only to find that the first thread on the page was on that topic!

There are some great ideas at work in this thread. I have nothing more to add, except my support!

So, the bossman and I brainstormed with yer fave dude (Neuron Geek) last week - and it's settled now...we will be sending out Follow Up review reminder emails 75 days after you submit your review (unless you've already done a follow up review) - those should start soon, within a week, maybe as soon as tomorrow.

AND (!) we will have a snazzy new box/stream under the new reviews box/stream (separate)for new Follow Up reviews (w00t!!!) So, no more getting lost in the shuffle! That awesome addition will be coming in the next two weeks.

I think this will be a big help. In fact, I might go back and do some follow ups now.

What about ones we already did? Will we get any alerts about them or will this just start from here on out?
