Hmm. Well, I think if there was more rank weighting for followups, that might be more incentive. However, I would hate to see that start to diminish the weighting gained from writing quality reviews in the first place. Especially since some follow ups are, frankly, a little pointless, especially if they come a day or two after the review came out, or only consist of a single sentence. If you want it to be more official, you'd have to set some sort of minimum word count standard...and I like the idea of being able to edit them, or to do multiple followups. I see I have opened a potentially big can of worms here.
Likewise, it would be cool to have our attention drawn to new followups, but again, I would hate to see that happening at the expense of giving new reviews exposure. I miss a number of reviews as is!
I disagree with respect to the fact that unloved/forgotten toys need not be followed up upon. I think drawing attention to the fact that it's not really a lasting favorite is important feedback. Likewise, I can imagine followup info I would want on books, and also possibly music. I guess it really depends how the review is written in the first place as well.
Anyways, that said, here is a distillation of my suggestions:
- a reminder email after a few months would be great
- If the contributor ranking weighting is really only 4%, I think that should be a bit higher. DOn't ask me how high, however, that just seems small.
- However, with higher weighting should come a word minimum.
- perhaps a small stream of follow up reviews underneath the list of regular reviews on the review page, just for those who are interested.
I don't know how plausible any of that is, and I don't want to make someone work their tail off on this - it's not bad the way it is, I just (selfishly) want to see more followups!
