Have you ever voted on someone's review and they voted on yours with the same vote?

Nazaress Nazaress
I courtesy-followed someone and rated one of their reviews. It wasn't spectacular but it was good so I gave them a fair rating. Later on, they rated one of my reviews with the exact same rating. I think it was intentional. I don't mean to brag (I'm really not, as I'm just explaining my reasoning) but I figure they gave me the same rating on purpose because they were the only one who rated my review as anything other than "Extremely Useful" out of a good number of votes.

I don't care about ranking and all that but I do care about fair rating. I think the votes on someone's review should reflect the quality of their review. If someone voted poorly on my review (because the quality was bad), I would vote high on their review (if the quality was good). And vice versa.

How about all of you? Has this ever happened? Do you think it was on purpose? What's your opinion on people doing this?

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Its entirely possible that there are people who don't read the reviews, they just vote to get the points. I would say continue to vote based on the content like you've been doing and ignore if this happens. Bad things have a tendency to come back and bite people on the ass. Don't let it get you down.

Thanks! Great advice. I'll definitely take it to heart. It doesn't matter, anyway, when you think about it. One little vote (and it wasn't even a bad one, just not the absolute best one) can't hurt me. I get my real votes from the people who actually read my reviews.

I don't even look at which people do what, because it seems to take the fairness out of reviewing. I think that if they are doing things like that it's just their own problem and you go on giving out what you believe to be fair ratings and comments!

Will do! Some people simply just do not write good reviews; Or at least, they don't put forth the same amount of effort that others do. I can't bring myself to give them a vote they don't deserve and that's that.

I know it happens but all in all most of the members of our community do not do this so it balances out in the end.

I would not know if it did happen to me. I never look at who my votes are from.

I don't know if this has happened to me, but I dislike the idea of this happening. It probably has happened to me, but a lot of my lower votes seem to rather be from new users who seem to not actually even read my reviews, rather than retaliation votes.

I don't pay attention if this as ever happened to me before. However, I'm not too worried about one bad vote.

I have thought this happened to me before, seemed more than coincidental. How I feel really depends on the situation. For instance, if I go out of my way to take a lot of photos for a review, take measurements, and add in every bit of info I could think to add. Then I post my review after looking it over, and I get nothing but good feedback, but I get one random vote that says anything less than "extremely useful" and there is no comment asking questions or telling me what I should have added. If it is someone who's reviews I have read and voted FAIRLY on, then I wonder if it was done intentionally and I find fault with that.

This has happened to me but I honestly don't pay attention any more to who votes what (well - I do - there are a couple of people I highly respect and I notice how they vote on my reviews cause it tells me if I need work).

Sometimes I tend to be hard on other reviews and I frequently vote "useful" instead of "extremely useful" but that's because I think EU is sometimes overused due to a reviewer's popularity or whatever.

I return votes to those that vote or comment on mine, but I base it on what I consider their review. I don't give them the exact rating they gave me. If I found their review EU or not worth reading I will vote accordingly.

A lot of things people do here bug me a little but because my review reputation stands on this kind of thing, I would be more upset over this.

I definitely know what you mean. I put a lot of time into my reviews and put in all the information one could ever need so I take pride in them. I wish I could put pictures in my reviews, too, but I don't have a camera.

@ SiNn: Thank you very much!

@ Hot 'N Sexy TexasMama: I'll probably stop paying attention once I have more reviews but since I only have three right now, I'm interested in their progress. Lol.

Exactly! I do get down voted but nothing to worry about. As long as it is rated useful I am happy camper.

I recently gave some rather bad votes to someone who wanted/wants (I won't say) to become an Advanced Reviewer. Frankly, their reviews are terrible! They have barely any information in them and yet, they got/are getting (again, I won't say) votes to become an Advanced Reviewer! Sometimes I don't know what other Advanced Reviewers are thinking, letting people like that into the community. I don't know about you but I would be mighty upset if someone received free assignments for such a subpar review. I'm wondering if people are just trying to nice when they definitely shouldn't.

But I digress. The reason I said all this was because I'm a tad worried they'll in turn give me bad ratings because of what I gave them. I didn't give them any more or less than what they deserved. I just have to hope they're mature and not vengeful and that they see my ratings as a reminder that they need to work harder on their reviews if they expect to succeed in the community.

You should vote honestly when you're voting, and if you feel as though somebody is deliberately downvoting your reviews, you should absolutely bring the evidence to Kristi to look into. That being said, voting is still entirely subjective and the difference between useful and extremely useful is a fine line that I think most reviewers spend too much time worrying over. Sometimes the difference between U and EU is entirely in the way you write. Are you going to change your whole writing style to please one person who thinks that your review is plenty useful but doesn't go above and beyond? Probably not. I digress though. Long story short; vote how you think is fair, and try not to worry too much if that person can't handle an honest opinion. Likewise, try not to worry too much about an off vote here and there.

I saw a couple of reviews like this just this week and honestly I think I may have voted on one. Then I looked at the other review and it was just as bad so I just got off that page. Its like they put the minimum in to get word count and leave it at that. It makes me mad when I try to out everything that I can think of into my reviews. I have a review that I have going now that I keep going back and testing the toy just to make sure I haven't missed anything.

I think it is terrible when people do this, if you want a better ranking so the work. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but you should be honest when you rate a review - just as you should be honest in your own reviews. I have not worried about what others will think or do in reaction to how I rate their reviews. If I think it is lacking something, I say so (unless someone else has already brought up what could be added).

I've seen so many people recently getting voted in and close to getting voted in (and you just know they will) who don't deserve it and to be honest, it literally makes me angry! Outright furious! I don't understand why these people are being allowed into the community when they put forth NO effort into their reviews. They just want free stuff!

What if one of these people manages to get a manufacturer-sponsored item? Their review will be the first and most important! And if it's as terrible as their others? THAT'S what makes me mad. These reviews are supposed to be helpful. I know they are to me! I read at least a couple reviews before getting ANY item from this site because some people put a lot of time into them and I find them useful in figuring out if I want the item or or not. But then there are these people who have only done the minimum two reviews (possibly one more, if you're lucky) and they all SUCK. And they're still getting voted in.

Admittedly, I only did the minimum two reviews before I decided to try to be an Advanced Reviewer but I had studied reviews for quite some time and found out what a good one entailed before I wrote my own so mine were quality from the get-go, if I do say so myself.

@ Sam: Thank you for the concern but it's not that serious. It only happened once and it's not that big of a deal. I'd definitely bring the vote to attention if it were something closer to "not useful at all" or the like but a "useful" vote is not something to cry about.

@ darthkitt3n: Wow. Really? I'm so sorry! You should definitely bring that to the attention of the admins if you think that it's deliberate. These votes are supposed to be fair.

I've been here three months and I've seen folks get voted in who I did not feel deserved it - but you know what? They're really not all that active and I know that they aren't going to get to do descriptive reviews (which are not the same as manufacturer sponsored) or video reviews. From what I've seen - they only hang around long enough to get 2-3 reviews and then leave cause their numbers aren't going up, etc.

I find that the ones who do the best are generally the ones who are willing to invest the time in the mentor program or studying the reviews on their own.

I know I've been through the mentor program twice and it really has helped me a lot - may try to go through it with a third person to work on dildos if I feel like I can't get a handle on reviewing them.

There wasn't an 'other', but my vote would be that I haven't noticed if it happens to me or not. Sometimes I see a few lower ratings on a review of mine, but I don't go and look to see if I rated that person or not. I rate sooooo many reviews, I am not going to remember unless I go and look.

Honestly, I think this has happened to me before. So what I started doing is that I only vote on reviews I can vote "extremely useful" on, and skip voting on the other ones.

I haven't used any of the toys on here yet, so I have yet to write a review, but I can see where you're coming from on this. I'd be agitated too, but I'm always quick to jump to that sort of conclusion.
