Anyone can be a reviewer of a product you already own. However, there are two options to becoming an Advanced Reviewer. You can either write two reviews on your own and go up for a public vote or you can work with a mentor and become advanced on graduation. Most of the community would encourage you to take the mentor program.

The advantage of being an advanced reviewer is that you are then eligible for a free monthly assignment.

Welcome to the community Michael. Please do read the page that Kindred gave you and I used the mentor program. I do agree that it is a great program to use for help making the reviews so much easier to write and understand what is wanted in them. Good luck and once again welcome to the community.

The wait time depends on what route you take to become an advanced reviewer. It's more rewarding to go through the mentor program. This allows you to learn from a higher ranked member. You should look for a mentor that is going to fit your needs. Don't just pick anyone. Pick someone with knowledge about the stuff you are reviewing. If you go through the mentor program for your advanced status how fast will depend on how fast you learn and how fast you write reviews. A mentor can't graduate you unless you write at least two reviews. Once you graduate you become advanced. What you do in the mentor program is write reviews and they go to your mentor. They will help you in the areas you need help in.

The shorter way is to write your two reviews and once they are publish put in for the up grade in your dashboard. This will only take a day or two at most. Should you decide to do this way and then decide you want to go into the mentor program, it might be harder for you to find a mentor because they won't receive full payment for mentoring you like they would if you didn't have the advanced status.

We need more male reviewers, so please start reviewing!

I agree with Beck. There are not enough male reviews so please do this it would be so nice to hear from the male what they like on this site. The mentor program is still the best way to go. I am so glad I did it that way and learned so much from my mentor. There are a lot of good mentors as well as other reviews here at EF that will help you in many ways if you ask. Can not wait to see your first reviews. Good luck and hope to be reading reviews from you soon.

Everyone has given the info you need so I'll just second, or third/fourth...DO IT! Either way you chose is fine but we definitely need more male reviewers.

I bet there are a few folks around here, myself included, that would be happy to give you some pointers about your reviews if you do not go the Mentor route. I will say that the Mentor program is awesome as far as helping you on your way to Advanced status.

They say we need more male reviewers, but I've had trouble finding items to review under assignment. I'm all for having other perspectives on products, so I'll find other things to review, as there are so many genres in which to write. Same as Tim, if you have questions or want pointers, there are plenty of resources, but I think if you're unsure, get a Mentor...
