Leaving Comments But Not Voting

Alan & Michele Alan & Michele
I was looking at a colleague's reviews last night and out of curiosity clicked to see who voted and how (come on, you know you do it too...LOL). What I noticed is that there were a couple of newer reviewers who were posting very positive comments but not leaving any vote, and that they were doing the same thing on other people's reviews too.

For those who may not know, when you post a comment it does not automatically cast a vote for the review. That has to be done by selecting a radio button from that little righthand area that is just above the Comments section. And if by chance you already knew that, I'm curious as to why you would leave a positive comment if you didn't feel the review was worth voting for? You aren't obligated to vote, but if there was a problem with the review that kept you from doing so, don't be afraid say so in your comments because it helps writers improve their reviews over time.

Some surveys I look at seem closed - no buttons to click on for a vote, but I will sometimes post a comment if I think it will be useful.

Sometimes I vote without a comment, for a positive vote. For not so positive votes, I leave a comment about something to change/add/clarify.

I think Alan & Michele is referring to reviews not forum posts. I believe review voting does not close.

From what I've seen, review voting only closes once you've submitted a vote. This is probably to prevent re-voting on a review.

and also prevents changing your vote too

Oh! Sorry, I meant for product reviews, not forum survey posts.

I have noticed the same thing.
I appreciate the comments on my reviews but would also like for them to be voted for also.
@ Mr. Sauce- I understand why you are leaving comments but not voting about reviews that you think need a little work, giving them the chance to edit or improve the review, but do you then go back and see if your suggestions were given any thought or their review edited then vote?

Great thread. I often do the opposite - I vote and don't leave a comment too... but only if it's a Useful or Extremely Useful vote. If I vote low, I qualify it with a comment. Nice way to bring it to the attention of new reviewers though - it is a good point!

I often don't vote.

I stepped out of the entire voting issue a long time ago when the rating issue became so contentious and people were upset about how/if/when you voted. Generally, a review has to be either really good, make me laugh or really bad before I bother. Then I have to sort through if it's "extremely useful" or "useful."

I sometimes don't vote even if I've left a comment when I'm undecided about how to vote. I fear you were talking about me. I know I commented but didn't vote on one of your reviews.

Actually I wasn't because it was someone else's reviews I was looking at and it was two other reviewers not voting, but I think it's great that you gave your reason for not voting as well. That makes a lot of sense to be so thoughtful before casting a vote.
I was largely trying to make sure that the new users understood that it was 2 separate things though, because I've been here awhile and am *still* a bit "duh" about how to work some areas of the site .

For me, I'm usually rushing and trying to give some positive feedback and some critique on the post, which I think is far more helpful than a simple vote...So, sometimes I deliberately skip it to save on time...but, honestly, usually I just flat out forget!

I want to bump this up for all the new reviewers. Many of them are getting involved in the process and may not realize the importance of voting along with leaving comments.

Also, if you are waiting to an answer to a question you ask before you vote, you can set an alert so you know if another comment has been posted (which may be the response to the question you asked).

This is what I do. I generally comment then vote (unless I am voting useful or higher) 2-3 days later. Some reviewers have rewritten their reviews, and that will make a difference in my vote.

What I have seen a lot more of it useful/extremely useful votes and far less voting "down" So some reviews that aren't remotely helpful are marked as useful or could end up extremely useful. I hate voting not useful, but I have and I back up my vote, plus if you edit your review I won't vote that.

plus (for those trying to get Advanced reviewer status) if you have a TON of suggestions and you actually listen and change your review to reflect that you may get more votes to qualify...hint hint

It might actually be nice if we could later go back and change our vote. Some people might have the time to do this, but I admit that I rarely do.

If a review is lacking basic information the first time, and I "DO" choose to vote, then my vote can never be changed even if they go back and answer comments or change their review. Votes can't be "upped."

That's true, although they can't be "downed" either.

Sorry, this thread got hidden on me didn't see the question.

I do go back for a little bit to see if they edited it or did a follow up. However, that wouldn't really change my vote for the original review. If they do go back and edit/clarify/etc, everyone can see that and go "wow, this person does pay attention to things and does care...I like that".
I do wish we could change our overall vote though, especially if they did clear up confusion or answer follow up questions.

Ditto...I don't want a newly written and very good review to be dinged by a less than average vote, so I'll comment and then come back in a few days to see if the review is different or at least the questions are answered in the comments. Just seems more fair that way.

I know this is an old thread, but this has happened to me lately. On one of my most recent reviews I found that a couple of people were leaving positive comments, but not rating the review. I don't quite understand - maybe they forgot? Hm. I'm much more familiar with the issue of receiving lots of votes but no comments of substance, it's strange to have it be the other way around.
